(record scratch) you say stand n' stuff tortillas old el paso says... start somewhere fresh >> ♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> right now at 10 o'clock, we are celebrating 2015 on penn's landing. skaters have been here all night long at the river rink and a big crowd is waiting for tonight's fireworks display and the celebration of a brand new year. >> we are not alone here. chopper three is live above the scene where in less than two hours from now on a crystal clear night we will broadcast a fireworks spectacular you do not want to miss. >> good evening to you happy new year. i'm jessica dean. >> and i'm chris may. we are so thrilled that you could be here with us tonight. hard to believe 2015 just about two hours away. fireworks go off right at midnight. we'll be in these chairs and we're going to give you the very best seat in the house

over on our sister station cbs3. >> it's going to look great. we got to see the fireworks at 6 o'clock and they were really spectacular. a lost people out here taking a look at them and just saying even after year, which were great, nobody thought they could top last year, they did and they were really wonderful to look at. a lot of kids out here for that early spectacular and of course we'll have a big crowd at midnight. but the 6 o'clock fireworks really lit up the sky. >> you were here to see in it person. >> i was. >> i was back at the studio and i could tell you they also looked great on television. even if you can't get down here to penn's landing to join us tune to cbs3 and you'll see a show you will absolutely love. you weren't alone. kathy orr was also here at 6 o'clock. she's down next to the blue cross river rink with more and, kathy happy new year to you. good to be back with you again this year. >> el were, it's wonderful to be with you chris and jessica. happy to you and everyone watching. yes, we are right here. they're calling it winter fest on the water front. it is a little village of sorts. everyone is coming in for the second session of skating. staying warm to my left with a fire pit. even though it's cold out people are staying warm and we have a new edition. the lodge. you can go indoors, warm up, it feels like your aunt's living room or family room. it's amazing. we're getting ready to hit the ice. let's talk about the weather tonight because it has gotten colder in the past couple hours. right now in philadelphia the temperature is 30 degrees. in allentown 21. the poconos only in the teens 14. ac at 25 degrees. the winds have picked up out of the southwest in

philadelphia, southwest at 15 miles an hour. elsewhere just five to 10 miles per hour winds so not so bad as far as the wind is concerned and here's our forecast for the fireworks at midnight. the temperature will be 27. the wind chill 22. and we're looking at clear skies and that has made for spectacular viewing of the fireworks earlier this evening and we anticipate the same thing coming up later tonight. right now we have a light show going on with the music. it's synchronized to the trees. it's just fantastic. we'll be back with some skaters later in the broadcast and of course your first forecast of the new year. we'll send it back to you. >> kathy we know you're probably going to lace up your skates too. stay area -- around for that. >> you're multi talented. you can forecast the weather and skate. >> not everyone can do that. >> at 6 o'clock you saw the fireworks. everybody got excited and it whet the appetite for the 12 o'clock midnight new year fireworks. we've seen the crowd continuing to grow since then. >> it gets bigger and bigger every year. "eyewitness news" reporter justin finch is at the place to be right now. let's can check in with him. justin i know you're looking forward to 2015 as much as we are. >> reporter: i certainly. , chris. there really is no bad spot whether you're by the river rink or up there at the chestnut street bridge or maybe you're at the waterfront here but every vantage point was amazing as kathy mentioned it was out of this world. crowds are making their way for the midnight show.

pops of color against a new year's eve night sky. >> when everything explodes that's the best part. that's our favorite part. >> reporter: each burst brighter than before making moments that drove some along the delaware to hold each other a bit closer to watch. others reached for their cell phones aiming up to capture something social media worthy as eyewitnesses tell us nothing tops seeing those flashy finishes in person. >> i loved it. >> reporter: really. >> yes. >> reporter: what was your favorite part. >> the ending. >> so excited. i can't explain it. >> reporter: at the start of the 6:00 p.m. show ice skaters stopped to take it in. fireworks set to music featured hollywood blockbuster sound tracks though we're told no screen or indoor comfort could do this justice. would you like it better at home with the tv or better out here in the cold. >> i think it's better out here. >> reporter: these cousins called a way to burn off the old to make room for the new. >> i'm ready to get rid of this year and start next year already. >> me, too. i'm looking forward to a great 2015. >> reporter: for some couples, a kiss at sunset on their wedding night might be fireworks enough, that is, unless you're the soon to be mr. and mrs. henigan. >> fireworks, great. >> reporter: have you ever heard of a couple building fireworks from new year's eve into their wedding plans. they tighter knot at 7:30 and this at 6 o'clock was the spot to be at the ice skating rink. we saw crowds stop in their tracks on the ice to look right over at the river and

watch those fireworks go off right above their heads. it was truly a stunning site. the show admit night will have a pop music theme coming up in just a few hours. live at penn's landing, justin finch, "eyewitness news" on the cw philly. >> justin thank you. it's anniversary date that's easy to remember. >> yes december 31st every year. way to go. >> another year of marriage and a new year. wonderful. a lot of excitement on the philadelphia side. it spreads into the delaware river and goes across to new jersey of course. >> yes, and there was one spot in particular that has an amazing vantage point for everything going on here on the penn's landing side. it's one of my favorite spots on the entire delaware river water front and "eyewitness news" reporter david spunt is there on the battleship new jersey. david. >> reporter: chris jessica this is a great spot. i just left the ship a few minutes ago. the families on board they have the best seat to the fireworks rivalling your spot where you are tonight. families arriving earlier tonight though i went out and about to see what people are doing in south jersey to celebrate. new jerseyans waited anxiously to welcome 2015 from the battleship to the suburbs we found plenty of people excited to start the new year. >> ♪ we caught up with worshipers at the gloucester county community church where hundreds packed inside to pray for a new year full of nonviolence and good fortune. >> praise god, pray, remember all of the wonderful things he's done for me in 2014 and know what he has already prepared for me in 2015. >> the lord has really blessed

diedism according to the cumberland county prosecutors office around 9:20 officers conducted a motor vehicle stop. they say both officers fired their guns killing 36-year-old jerome read. police recovered a gun at the scene. >> investigation is ongoing. we're conducting a investigation pursuant to the attorney general guidelines. more information will follow but at this time this is what we have: stated in the press release a gun was recovered. >> reporter: several people were outside including hasim love who says he was less than 15 feet away and he heard the officer say the name of the person in the car. >> he said to him just before shots were fired. >> he just told him don't move. you know, he was going to kill him. >> reporter: the bridgeton police department says the officer has been with them for about three years the other officer for about temperature years both on administrative leave n bridgeton, cleve bryan, "eyewitness news" on the cw philly we're learning more about a deadly police involved shooting in delaware county. upper darby authorities tell "eyewitness news" fire officers fired 22 shots at joe pacini after they say he tried to run them down with his car. they also say pacini had a history of mental illness and was arrested back in 2005. police say they had a warrant out for pacini's arrest at the time of the shooting because he made threats against them on youtube. we're continuing to count down the minutes until 2015. overseas the new year is already here. we're back in a moment with some of the best celebrations from around the world. kate. >> and diana it's a cold start to 20's 15 and a chilly dry weather will stick with us

[cheers and applause] it's already 2015 in hong kong. this is what you would call a pyro musical. the hong kong tourism board describes it as a mix of fireworks special lighting effects and music and this display took place over victoria harbor. >> moscow is also well into the new year. fireworks lit up the night sky near red square tonight. spectators gathering along the banks of the moscow river to celebrate 2015. >> more than 300,000 people watched the fireworks in paris. the words happy new year were projected in several different languages prior to that show and the people there absolutely loved it. >> if i couldn't be in philadelphia i think i would want to be in paris. >> that would be nice. >> party in germany. revelers toast 2015 at the brandenburg gate a historic site in germany where east meets west and where they gather for the world cup pretty often. that's a look at what's going on around the world. for now let's go back to diana rocco in the studio. >> thank you. authorities warn philadelphians about the dangers of irresponsible gunfire when celebrating the new year. earlier today a briefing was held at philadelphia police headquarters. commissioner charles ramsey warns the laws of gravity are in play when firing a gun into the air. >> i was shot in the head at second and vernon streets in south philadelphia. >> at the age of 11 years old joe jaskolka was changed forever. he was hit by a stray bullet

on new year's eve in 1998. joe is now paralyzed on the right side and has undergone more than 33 surgeries. the person who fired that gun has never been caught. >> let's go back to penn's landing now with meteorologist kathy orr. it seems like a chilly night down there but they've been having so much fun kathy you've been warming up the screen. happy new year. >> happy new year to you as well. i am inside the lodge right now. everyone enjoying some festivities. happy new year, girls. it's almost like you're in your favorite aunt's perhaps i guess family room. you can see the fireplace is over there and also the couches very comfortable. let's take a look outside though, because everyone is hitting the ice. they're getting ready for the festivities. i want to draw your attention to the river rink. better than ever this year. this is the second session. they're getting ready for the fireworks and enjoying the festivities. as you take a look at that, let's take a look at some of the weather. on storm storm storm scan3 we have crystal clear skies. temperatures in philadelphia right now 30 degrees. allentown 21. the poconos only 16. it is frigid there but good for skiers. tomorrow we have to look ahead to the mummers parade. as they strut their stuff a 10 o'clock temperature freezing. by noon the temperature will be 34 degrees. back here live at the river rink do these people look ready? i think so. they're counting down to 2015 and we'll have that coming of course with our continuing coverage on cbs3 of the fireworks. for now back to you. >> thank you kathy. looks like those people are having a great time

guiltying ared to keep their eyes to the sky. let's check in with our weather watchers. you can see these temperatures really are starting to drop. robert in downingtown reporting 19 degrees at the moment. he says crystal clear starlit night, 19 degrees right now. it is cold out there. one more weather watcher here as we move further to the east, this is chris in berwyn reporting 21 degrees right now. he says a clear night to watch fireworks. happy new year everyone and happy new year to you as well. if you like the weather you can be featured in our newscast by becoming a eyewitness weather watcher. sign up now cbsphilly.com/watchers. let's take a look outside you can see the skyline is all lit up as we look from our rooftop here at the cbs3 studios over center city. looks great. it's a nice clear night. we'll be keeping our eyes to the sky shortly as the fireworks display will begin right around midnight and of course you can see it over on our sister station cbs3. let's take a look at storm scan3 because actually we don't have the worst weather across the nation. that honor goes to the southwest tonight. notice it's still snowing in arizona. snow near las vegas today with temperatures that have been hovering in the low 40's there and much of the southwest is under winter storm watches. you can see these hard freeze watches and warnings around san francisco, san jose even down toward twos san diego. the worst over west texas noon arizona where winter storm warnings have been post pedestrianly at least we're drive. it may be cold but we're not tracking snow or rain, at least not now. we're seeing a quiet start to 2015 tomorrow with that nice west wind still brisk and highs only in the 30's. high pressure starts to move
