>> ♪ >> "eyewitness news" at 10:00 begins with breaking news. chopper three is live over northeast philadelphia where there is an enormous water main break right now. you can see a geyser shooting dozens of feet into the air. this is at bluegrass road near grant road. right now it's not exactly clear what caused this break but it is causing a big mess right now. officials from the water department are just arriving on the scene so we hope to learn more information in a few minutes. for now this enormous water main break in northeast philadelphia on bluegrass road. you'll want to avoid that area and you'll want to stay with "eyewitness news." we'll keep you up to date here on tv and also on our web site at cbsphilly.com. developing story at 10:00. investigators say that this man from ohio wanted to go to washington with deadly intentions. an alleged terror plot is foiled tonight and the man behind it is in custody. officials say he had ammunition and a plan in place. good evening, i'm chris may. >> i'm jessica dean. diana rocco is live with information about how he he he was taken down. >> reporter: christopher cornell was planning to attack the u.s. capital with pipe bombs and guns but unbeknownst

to him he was hatching this plot with an fbi informant. six months of planning and numerous conversations with an fbi informant led to the arrest of 20-year-old christopher cornell wednesday. investigators say he used an alias. agents took him down after he purchased two semi-automatic weapons and ammunition from a cincinnati ohio gun store. >> when he came out the door, he would have come out here. he was about halfway across to where the cars are parked. by that time the agents had come across the parking lot and two agents were on top of him, two or three. >> reporter: according to the federal complaint his plan was to kill employees and officers working in and around the u.s. capital. he saw congress as his enemy. cornell first came to the fbi's attention this past summer when an informant notified authorities he wanted to attack dr. scott white from drexel university says it's something law enforcement needs to continually be aware of. >> the next five years we're going to see a lot more of this. these people try to write their own narrative. they try to be somebody important in society for which they're not. >> reporter: cornell was planning to travel to d.c. he was active on twitter posting statement and videos in support of isis. his emotional father spoke on his behalf. >> he was like a big kid. his best friend is his cat mikey and his mom. >> right now investigators say all indications are that cornell was working alone. authorities also say that while he had serious intent, he was never a real threat. we're live in the satellite center tonight.

i'm diana diana diana rocco. >> security was increased at the delaware air national guard base near new castle. officials there tell "eyewitness news" on both monday and tuesday an unusual amount of cars stopped to ask for directions at the base, some in fact even pulled in but then backed up and left without saying anything. whatever the reason, it was suspicious enough for the army to tighten security there. >> we're going to be on the safe side and we're going to treat everything as if it has a potential to be a threat. >> well, there is surveillance video of those cars. officials say they are reviewing that tape tonight. also today a suspicious package forced an evacuation at joint base mcguire-dix-lakehurst in south jersey. that package was found in the commissary exchange complex. an all clear was given after they found the package was harmless. investigators are still looking into what happened. >> secretary of state john kerry says he'll travel to paris on monday to show solidarity with the french people. this move follows sharp criticism of the obama administration for not sending a senior official for sunday's rally for unity in paris. more than 40 world leaders attended that rally. the new edition of the newspaper charlie hebdo sold out before today. long lines formed for those waiting for a copy. one week ago gunmen stormed the paper's offices killing 12 people. for the very latest on the capital plot, the security situation at the military bases here at home and the new developments in paris, you can always can check out our web site. we're always on at cbsphilly.com. >> new information tonight in

this story a13-year-old girl charged today after police say that she distributed a sexually explicit video at a bristol township middle school. authorities say that the girl wasn't involved in the making of the video. we know police confiscated at least cell phones as they investigated that incident at franklin roosevelt middle school. the girl and her family are said to be cooperating with authorities. well, a delaware teacher is facing charges tonight accused in that a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student. this is the suspect richard howell the second of wyoming delaware, is the suspect. police say that the caesar rodney high school teacher had sex with that student several times between march and december of last year. police say some of those incidents occurred on school grounds. how well who you see here has now been suspended with pay. >> police say they've arrested one of philadelphia's most wanted fugitives. tam lynn lee was captured by u.s. marshals in a hotel in ashland virginia. police say in august lee stabbed three men and dumped their bodies into the schuylkill river in fairmount parks. those bodies were tied to weighted canisters. one of the victims survived and identified lee as the attacker. >> in toms officer today a school bus engulfed in flames before 7 o'clock this morning. the bus driver and an aide were driving along freehold road near dugan lane when the driver smelled something burning. they pulled over, they got off the bus and then this. thankfully no students were on board. in the end no one was injured. >> a philadelphia church is praying for a miracle tonight.

police are searching for thieves who burglarize add house of worship. our natasha brown tells us why the congregation was targeted. >> reporter: in the overnight hours of saturday december 13th, a robbery suspect targets a most unsuspecting place a church in the 6,000 block of elmwood avenue in southwest philadelphia. >> he jumps over the side fence breaks through the window, goes in. he's in there inn there for about 45 minutes. >> reporter: surveillance video from straight gate church gives a good glimpse of the man as he arrives in a black suv scales the fence and heads for the church that is under renovation. he hauls out bags full of copper plumbing valued at $3,500. >> the church is good for the community. they're renovating the church to bring people together and you got people taking advantage. >> reporter: the suspect was last seen leaving the scene in a black ford explorer or chevy trailblazer. if you have any information about this case please contact right weigh. at southwest detectives, natasha brown, "eyewitness news" on the cw philly. >> another bold crime caught on camera. a suspect caught on tape stealing a philadelphia police bike. this crime was caught on tape at 21 south 12th street in washington square last friday. investigators say the officer responded to the call on the fourth floor and left that bike in the lob beach minutes later the suspect entered the building and walked off with the bike with that police equipment attached. if you recognize this person, call police. new tonight in mount airy a memorial service was held

lauretha vaird. she was a nine year veteran of the force. christopher roni was scheduled to die by lethal injection january 8 but was grant add stay. >> tonight we're hearing from camden county woman who says she was humiliated by six flags great adventure and now she's suing. having only one arm and one hand with three fingers doesn't stop jacqueline winter from handling work and family. but last june after boarding the el toro rollercoaster she was told she couldn't ride because she didn't meet safety standards she says she's rode dozens of rollercoasters in her life with no problems. >> i didn't want to make a scene in front of my daughter. everybody is looking at her like way is that lady with the one arm getting off the ride. >> you have to judge people based on their actual capabilities, what they can do. >> "eyewitness news" reached out to six flags today. the amusement park told us they do not comment on pending lawsuits. >> classes are expected to resume at nazareth academy grade school in northeast tomorrow after an unusual number of sickouts. the school was closed today so crews could disinfect the building. 55 of the school's 204 students were out sick on monday and 75 out sick on tuesday. the principal says many of the students have the same symptoms. >> fever headache, sneezing, coughing. we decided we had to do it. >> students will be reminded to wash their hands and use hand sanitizer when they return to school. >> well, new at 10 o'clock tonight, two free climbers

have reached the summit of yosemite's he will -- el captain. the two men are safe and they're in the record books. bigad shaban shows us their amazing feat. >> reporter: the two men looked like tiny dots as they made their final as sent into history. >> reporter: to an all seeing security guard or a hotel butler, robots are increasingly jointing the workforce. hospitals are using them to disinfect exam rooms and amazon uses an army of robots to fill orders. and in the not too distant future people will be able to buy their own personal robot assistant. at the columbia university school of engineering a team is trying to teach this robot to think for itself as it figures out how to fold clothes. >> if you can do clothes folded you could probably do food paper precipitation. >> reporter: first robots need to understand how people communicate and adapt to changing situations. scientists are so close to perfecting this technology that personal robots could be the reality in the next 10 years. reporting for three on your side, i'm jim donovan. >> a philadelphia cab driver gets the tip of a lifetime. >> did he ever. he received a $989.96 tip on a cab ride. the ride lasted less than a minutes. he said his shift had been a little hectic that night but his mystery passenger told him he'd make it a great night and punched in that tip. his fellow cabbies say they've never seen anything quite like it. >> never. it's a rare moment to get $1,000. >> it's nice that he got that. good for him. he can go pay some bills. >> freedom taxi says that the credit card company would not reveal the mystery tipper it's name. speaking of generosity taylor swift is certainly known for hers and now she's done it again. she surprised a berks county woman by helping pay her

student loan. this is rebecca bortnicker who had voiced concerns about money on tumbler. she received a package from taylor including a box of gifts and some artwork as well but there was also this, a check for $1,989. that number matching the title of taylor's new album and i believe the year she was born. >> yup. >> 1989. very nice. >> so thoughtful. wow. in weather tonight we're talking about cold temperatures but nothing like we've seen as of late. those temperatures marching up just a little bit. in the pennsylvania side of our map we're looking at temperatures that are in the upper 20's. barbara reporting in 27 degrees in willow grove with not much of a wind tonight out of the northwest at just about 2 miles an hour. on the jersey side it's looking pretty cool but comfortable. vaughn is reporting a temperature of 30 degrees in delran. the pressure is steady here. let's see what ron had to see. feels like 24 degrees. the dewpoint is 19. let's go to the first state of delaware where it is 29 degrees currently and john says in newark a northerly wind at 4 miles an hour, a very nice night. in philadelphia the same thing goes. we have a partly cloudy sky. skies are slowly clearing out and we are going to be in for a cold night. on storm scan3 you can see a few clouds still lingering across the keystone state but once you get into ohio you see some breaks. we have a weak area of high pressure that will be moving in overnight tonight and give us some sunshine and also bring in some cooler temperatures as well for tomorrow night. overnight temperatures will be falling into the 20's. we're still holding onto 31 in

the city, 22 in the poconos 26 degrees as you go to the north and west in reading. columbus looking at 17, so a lot of cold air through the great lakes and the midwest. cold even down as far south as atlanta and birmingham with temperatures in the 30's and nashville in the 20's. as our storm system that brushed by with a little light snow earlier this morning down the shore moves away, we'll see sunshine with this weak area of high pressure for your thursday. it gets a little bit windy though, on friday as we see the high to the south and an area of low pressure to the north and then we slowly keep the sunshine in and keep the temperatures more comfortable with less wind on saturday. temperatures still in the 30's its not until sunday that we warm up but we could be paying the price. our european long range model is showing rain for late sunday and with this system it would only be rain, it would also be some wind. when we look at these two long range models, the gfs it's saying not getting much of anything but the european continues to show over an inch of rain on sunday so we'll see if that american model comes around or if that gfs backs off over the next couple days. overnight mainly cloudy skies will give way to some clearing the low 25. tomorrow the high 36. not much wind so it will be very comfortable. everyone has been asking wherely is real cold air where is that polar vortex air. right here in the bering see the allusion islands. next week we get a shot of cold air moving in for monday, mlk day and a week from saturday a huge trough builds in the east and that could be the start real cold weather returning. here's a look at the seven-day forecast.
