good wednesday morning, everybody. we begin with the biggest political upset of the year. >> oh, boy. eric cantor, long expected to become the next speaker of the house, has lost his primary to tea party candidate, dave brat. >> abc's tahman bradley has more from washington. >> reporter: it's one of the most stunning upsets in political history. eric cantor, the second-most powerful house republican, defeated by a virtually unknown tea party challenger. >> i know there's a lot of long faces here tonight. and it's disappointing, sure. >> reporter: the man who took down kantor, college economics professor, who outspend 50-1. kantor spending $5 million. brata mere $100,000. >> this was not just basic man values and virtues. >> reporter: kantor was seen by many as the next speaker of the

house. biding his time until john boehner leaves his post. his loss will have sideismic political consequences in washington. >> he was viewed as too close to president obama on immigration reform. >> reporter: kantors loss means immigration reform is certainly dead. republican leaders in congress are not likely to touch the issue season. his defeat is likely to rally tea party activists in other races. many thought the gop had gained the upper hand on the tea party, when mitch mcconnell fought off a tough primary challenge. but it proves that the civil war is far from over. reaction from democrats was swift. they say as far as the midterm elections are concerned, it's a whole new ball game. >> it sure is, tahman. thank you very much. live in washington. now, to our other top story. a quiet community in oregon, shattered by the nation's latest

school shooting. >> a teenage student armed with a rifle, opened fire, killing one classmate and wounding a teacher before killing himself. mary bruce has the latest. >> reporter: students at this oregon middle school were about to start their day when a lone gunman opened fire. >> priority call. reynolds high school. shots fired in the locker room. at least one person down. medical is responding. >> i was really scared. this is happening. this is real. >> reporter: armed with a rifle, the gunman started shooting in a locker room. and allegely chased a beloved phys-ed teacher down the hall. >> he was running after her p.e. teacher, who ended up getting shot. >> reporter: that teacher survi survived. >> the second shots, it sounded, they were really loud and really close. >> reporter: terrified students huddled in the gym as the shots rang out. officials from multiple agencies raced to the scene. the school locked down. >> everybody was, be quiet, there's a shooter. this is not a drill. >> reporter: hundreds of

students were led out of harm's way, evacuating with their hands over their heads. their backpacks left behind as they fled the scene. anguished parents rushed to find their children. >> it was really scary. >> reporter: the shooter was found dead. his motive remains unknown. >> this was a tragic event. it feels so personal. >> reporter: tragedy is an all-too familiar scene. by one count, this is at least the 74th school shooting since the massacre at sandy hook elementary. we know the name of the student who was killed. 14-year-old emilio hoffman. he died just one day shy of his sophomore year. it didn't take long for the news of the shooting to reach the nation's capital. >> his failure to push through gun laws has been his biggest frustration of his presidency. >> we're the only developed country on earth where it happens. and it happens now once a week.

and it's a one-day story. there's no place else like this. >> mr. obama went on to say that that change on gun policy can only come if the country demands it. the country has to do soul-searching about this. to the unfolding drama in iraq. thousands of iraqis are on the move after a major city were taken over by militants. there are fears that an al qaeda-linked group can spark another war in the region. alex marquardt filed this report just moments ago. >> reporter: a mass exodus. around 1,000 people have fled the city of mosul, according to the united nations, as it fell into the hands of an al qaeda offshoot. all of the people have fled, this man said. they have left their homes. and the people are lying dead in the streets. these radical militants belong to isis. in the fighting, they forced iraq's army and police to

abandon their posts. left behind were money, weapons and these american armored vehicles given to iraq. now, in the hands of the militants. the army dissolved. they were terrified, this woman said. they fled, so we left, too. mosul is the second major iraqi city to fall to isis this year. in january, fallujah, where hundreds of american forces died, also fell, and is still in isis control. today, iraq is awash in violence. there's almost daily car bombings. some 800 people died in may alone. elections in april went smoothly. but there is still no government. iraq's prime minister has declared a state of emergency and called for international help. as isis continues its march and fears grow that iraq is splitting apart. alex marquardt, abc news, beirut. friendly fire being blamed for the deaths of five american troops in afghanistan.

they were on patrol when ambushed by the taliban and called in for air support. the bomb was mistakenly dropped on them. one of the soldiers is justin helton of ohio. and alec taupin of illinois. he joined the army after high school. >> he was looking for the challenge. he was looking for the opportunity. wanted to serve his country, since grade school. i wish it wasn't have been -- sorry. >> sources say there was a miscommunication about exactly where the air strike should have taken place. tough questions for defense secretary chuck hagel and his role of handing over five taliban leaders from guantanamo bay in exchange for sergeant bowe bergdahl. hagel will be answering to a house panel still furious about not being notified about the swap. the administration says bowe bergdahl's health was a concern. a wide swath of louisiana is flooding. with watches and warnings posted for the southeastern part of

that state. yesterday's storm dumped up to seven inches of rain over lafayette. roads were turned into rivers, as you can see here. never a good idea to drive through waters like that. at least one driver found himself stranded. now, a look at today's weather. thunderstorms will again blanket the eastern one-third of the nation. dumping heavy rain across the southeast. as another system lines up behind it. across the upper plains and midwest. >> temperatures will be in the 60s in new england and the northern plains. 70s along the west coast. 80s and 90s across the south. the hot spot, 120 degrees in death valley. coming up, car parts and catchup. why ford is teaming up with heinz. and in the dog house. a mayor walking his dog, caught on camera leaving an unwanted gift on a neighbor's property. a luxury home in danger of falling into the lake below.

breaking business news overnight. p.f. chang's is looking into a data breach at its restaurants across the country. data from thousands of credit and debit cards may have been stolen. they popped up on the underground website linked to the target breach. the stolen cards had been used at p.f. chang's from march until may. united changed the rules for frequent flyers. instead of earning miles on how much they fly, they will be rewarded for how much they pay for their tickets. business class and first class will rack up miles. the new policy takes effect next march. the faa has given permission for the first drone flight over

cdc. the agent says 29 million americans have diabetes. up 3% from four years ago. and one in four americans may be diabetic and not know it. diabetics who had obesity surgery can remain in remission for 15 years or longer. the fda and epa are urging all women of child-bearing age to eat more fish. only maximum limits had been advised. now, the new guideline is 8 to 12 ounces of seafood every week. women should avoid tuna, tile fish, shark, sword fish and king mackerel. they should focus on shrimp, salmon, to lap ya, and cod. a luxury home dangling from the edge of a cliff 75 feet over a rocky shoreline. a chunk of that 4,000-square-foot house on lake whitney has crumbled into the water below. when the crack appeared in the land, the owners were told to
