breaking news this morning -- crisis in iraq. militants on the move right now. undoing years of hard work by the u.s. work that cost american money and lives. leadership scramble. the unprecedented defeat of eric cantor, being felt far from his congressional district. the aftershocks are just beginning to surface from the political upset of the year. abandon ship. flames shoot from a boat with passengers and a dog onboard. the video and rescue from a group of whale watchers. and a guide stuns his passengers by frolicking with alligators. good thursday morning. we begin with breaking news. just moments ago, a militant group marching through iraq confirmed what many suspected.

they're goal is to seize baghdad. >> the crisis unfolding right now is threatening to undo the eight-year attempt by the united states military to stabilize the country. the al qaeda-inspired group has taken mosul and tikrit. abc's alex marquardt is in the region and just filed this report. >> reporter: al qaeda on the move. the roads of northern iraq littered with the burned out carcasses of iraqi army vehicles. soon after taking iraq's second-biggest city, mosul, the al qaeda offshoot, known as i.s.i.s., went to take tikrit, the home of saddam hussein. we're dealing with this situation. we're not going to allow this to carry on, said iraq's prime minister. there's little evidence that i.s.i.s., short of the islamic state of iraq and syria, is facing little resistance. the prime minister has asked citizens to take up arms, as iraqi forces are fleeing. so, too, are normal iraqis. around 500,000 people are

believed to have left mosul. fleeing not i.s.i.s., but out of fear that iran will respond with ire strikes. and the although the white house has called the situation grave, there's no sign for now that the u.s. wants to get involved. so, i.s.i.s. continues its march. the capital, baghdad, now, in its sights. an advance that threatens not only to break iraq apart, but to destabilize the entire region. alex marquardt, abc news, beirut. thank you, alex. overnight, the iraqi government ordered a curfew for the streets of baghdad. we'll have much more later on "good morning america," from abc news' terry moran who made his way to iraq. the other major story we're following is the political fallout from the stunning defeat of eric cantor. >> republican lawmakers on capitol hill scrambling to determine who can take cantor's leadership post in just one week. abc's tahman bradley reporting

from washington. >> reporter: on capitol hill, you can still feel the shock waves from eric cantor's stunning defeat. >> effective july 31st, i will be stepping down as majority leader. >> reporter: cantor's exit leaves republican leadership in disarray. he was speaker john boehner's top lieutenant. >> eric cantor, a good friend of mine. and been a very good leader for our party. >> reporter: house republicans are now scrambling to find a new leader. they'll hold an election one week from today. >> this is titanic. it got the entire washington establishment offguard. and got eric cantor caught offguard, too. >> reporter: cantor was beaten by dave brat, whose campaign spent just over $100,000. cantor spent more than that dining out at steak houses. >> i want to scale down washington, d.c. >> reporter: the big issue in the brat/cantor match-up was immigration. brat painted cantor as close to president obama on immigration reform, after watching their colleagues defeat. republican leaders in congress are not likely to touch the

issue this year. president obama, speaking last night at a private fund-raiser, rejected the notion that cantor's loss means that immigration reform is dead. but he's going to have a hard time finding anyone in republican leadership willing to strike a deal. john and reena? >> tahman bradley, live in washington. thank you. stories of abuse are emerging from a new wave of immigrant children streaming in unaccompanied by adults. the minors from south america are being arrested and placed in holding centers. many of the kids are packed into fenced cages and forced to sleep on hard floors. there's been allegations of sexual abuse. and advocacy groups say 80% of the kids are not getting enough food and water. >> it's gruesome. i don't know how to explain it. appalled at the scene, the way they're holding them, as prisoners. they're not prisoners. they're children. >> the children are fleeing violent crimes in honduras and other countries. they're supposed to be transferred to health and human

services within 72 hours. defense secretary chuck hagel on the defensive yesterday on capitol hill over the britain swap that freed bowe bergdahl. the pentagon chief admitted the administration could have done more to keep lawmakers informed of the deal. but the situation was too uncertain to reveal much information. >> this transfer sets a dangerous precedent in negotiating with terrorists. >> we grew increasingly concerned that any delay or any leaks could derail the deal and further endanger sergeant bergdahl. we are learning new details about bergdahl's background. he served in the coast guard before he left for the army. and the a.p. says it has found bergdahl's old facebook page, in which he expresses frustration with the world and wished to change the status quo. police in oregon say a teen gunman arrived at school with enough firepower to unleash a rampage. but jared padgett didn't get the chance. while suiting up in the locker

room, a fellow freshman walked in and surprised padgett, who shot that boy to death. padgett chased a gym teacher down the hall, firing and wounding him, before turning the gun on himself. school officials have canceled final exams but say graduation will take place. a walmart truck driver has pleaded not guilty in the fatal crash that also injured comedian tracy morgan. prosecutors says it appeared that kevin roper, may have fallen asleep behind the wheel. investigators are looking into roper's commute. he lives in georgia but works in delaware. severe storms have been pounding southwestern pennsylvania, triggering a slew of watches and warnings. trees split by lightning or rupp uprooted by vicious winds. power was knocked out and roadways were flooded. and it's not over yet. more rain in the forecast for the area today. in fact, the entire east coast, from maine to florida, in for a lot of wet weather. and expect some strong storm activity from texas to kentucky.

courtroom, tearfully hugging the 16-year-old instead of lashing out. she convinced the judge to send the boy to juvenile detention until he's 19. then, he'll be educating children about the dangers of guns. two philadelphia teens could have gotten into big trouble for arriving 30 minutes late for school. but they had a pretty good excuse. they were walking to school when they heard a noise and saw a house on fire. without any regard for their own safety, the boys rushed inside. >> the first thought we heard was gunshots. >> the house is on fire. >> that's when we got the grandfather and the grandchild out. and quickly, we just ran back outside. >> and once they rescued that little boy and his grandfather, they continued on their way to school. the boys played down their heroics. isaiah saying, quote, it wasn't much of a big deal. and michael adding, it was just a normal day. >> great kids. quite a scene in the waters of british columbia, when a 50-foot fishing boat were

those stories, thanks to sherry williams of our station in philadelphia. >> reporter: excitement and joy as hundreds of pierce college students received their hard-earned degrees. among them in tandaleah robinson, a mother of three who went back to school. the 43-year-old has no idea that her son, corporal paul robinson, has driven from his marine corps base in virginia, to personally present her degree. >> she's given to us our whole life. it's time i give it back. >> reporter: and then, the big moment. >> her reaction was exactly what i was expecting. exactly what i was expecting. i didn't expect anything less opinion i know my mom's a big cry baby. >> reporter: corporal robinson is only in town were one night. he wasn't sure if he would be able to make it to his mother's ceremony. he found out this morning. >> i am overjoyed. this is great, i'll tell you.
