the chaotic situation in iraq shows no signs of letting up, as mill trants claim more territory. >> and president obama is weighing his options, as the insurgents creep closer to baghdad. will u.s. strikes be next? >> abc's christian fisher live from the white house. good morning, kristen. >> reporter: the u.s. military is going to do something. but after nearly nine years of war and sacrifice in iraq, one option not on the able is putting more u.s. troops back on the ground. this cell phone video shot yesterday, appears to show islamic extremists, through mosul, and vehicles seized from iraqi soldiers. the soldiers have been trying to stop the militants as they storm through city aftercy towards baghdad. as this youtube video shows, iraqi troops are losing. thousands of iraqi soldiers are seen here surrendering to the militants, with links to

al qaeda. iraq's government is begging the u.s. to step in. yesterday, a caution president obama said help is on the way. >> my team is working around the clock to identify how we can provide the most effective assistance to them. >> reporter: the white house is now weighing a range of short-term military options, including air strikes. but putting american troops back on the ground isn't one of them. instead, the president is calling on the international community to help. but the top u.n. official in iraq appears to be downplaying the crisis. saying the iraqi government is still in control. >> this is the way i understood him. there's no immediate danger of the violence spreading towards or to baghdad. >> reporter: 11 years after u.s. troops toppled saddam hussein, hundreds of american contractors have now been evacuated from a base in northern iraq. prompting the secretary of state to say, the time to act is now. >> we are deeply concerned about what is happening in iraq. and we are not -- >> reporter: another country not

waiting, iran. iraq's historical arch nemesis. tehran has dispatched fighters to help the government. >> what do we know about the militants? when they take over baghdad or want to take over baghdad, what's their goal after crippling the capital? >> reporter: well, these militants are from i.s.i.s. that's short for the islamic state of iraq and syria. and their goal is essentially to make their name a reality. they want to create a new islamic state in that region. and they're willing to do it at almost all costs. back to you. >> kristin fisher, live in washington. thank you. bowe bergdahl is back on u.s. soil this morning for the first time since his release after his five years in taliban captivity. until he's well enough, bergdahl will stay at a military treatment center in san antonio, texas. doctors say he's likely facing months of treatment for physical injuries and psychological trauma. bergdahl's family is also in texas where they will spend time

with him. he was held by the taliban for five years, the longest of any american soldier since the vietnam war. and stay with abc news for the latest on bowe bergdahl's return to the u.s. we're live in san antonio, coming up on "good morning america." extreme weather has spawned at least one tornado overnight in rural central texas. damaged a home. the same system produced large hail in abilene, shattering car windshields and building windows. the storm dropped one to three inches across the area. more than 20% of the state is still considered under extreme drought. stormy conditions moving east today. focusing on the gulf coast, which will get a good soaking of heavy rain. thunderstorms from the mid-atlantic to the northeast. and scattered showers in the pacific northwest, into the dakotas. otherwise, sunny and dry. >> temperatures, seasonable in the 80s and 80s. and sizzling triple digits in the southwest. as the controversy erupts over the treatment of immigrant children entering the country alone. we're getting new images from one of the facilities where

they're being held. abc news was allowed to tour this holding center at a naval base in ventura county, california. seeing where the kids were sleeping and eating despite allegations, u.s. officials say the kids are being treated humanely. some have been placed with u.s. families. today, president obama gets a firsthand look at bleak conditions faced by native americans on tribal lands. in his first visit to north dakota indian country as president. he's in excellent health after a physical last month. he's almost 53. and the report shows only some minor aches and pains. new reports this morning saying donald sterling has hired several private investigation firms to dig up dirt. the associated press says the targets of sterling's investigators are the current and former nba commissioners and the league's other 29 owners. they've been told into look into allegations of discriminatory conduct. and whether the other owners

have made racist sexist remarks. donald sterling is suing the league for trying to oust him after his racist comments went public. a special delivery from the sun. what is called a coronal mass ejection, expected to hit the earth with a glancing blow today. an electromagnetic could pose disruptions in earth. but poses no dangers. several solar flares were earlier this week. plenty of fireworks across brazil to celebrate their team's win in the opening march in the world cup. >> their star forward, neymar scored. full details comes up later. everyone wants to be like mike. america's newest billionaire is revealed overnight. and finally found. a woman goes missing for several days after getting stuck in the mud. how she was able to survive until help arrived.

all right. the crisis in iraq is likely to cost you money. oil prices already rising because iraq is a major supplier. each dollar a barrel increase means 2 cents or so per gallon of gas. one analyst expects gas prices to go up 5 cents to 10 cents in the next few days. it will cost you more to drive merchandise to the stores. the automaker has lowered fuel economy ratings of 2013 and

2014 models, fiesta, c-max, fusion and lincoln mkz. ford will reimburse the buyers. a big, new development about some top american beers. the ingredients are now on line. it follows the call by a food blogger for more transparency by the brewers. anheuser-busch has the ingredient listings for budweiser and bud light. michael jordan seems to be the nation's newest billionaire. the basketball hall of famer is in the billionaires club because of his increased ownership stake in the charlotte hornets. jordan owns nearly 90% of the team. his net worth was around $750 million. this weekend will see the sequel showdown, "22 jump street," and "how to train your druggen 2" opens today. dragon is expected to do better in the long run. >> i saw "million dollar arm"

it for clues. a stage 4 cancer patient in oklahoma safely back home, after a scary experience. eileen springer was found after four days, stuck in the mud. police say she missed her turn while driving home. and when she tried to turn around, her suv got stuck. springer didn't want to get out because of her condition. she survived by eating food she had just purchased at a local market. and now, an update on a luxury house in texas, teetering for days on the edge of a cliff. the homeowner has decided to burn it down. a chunk of the $700,000 home has already fallen into lake whitney below. and the deliberate burn is set to take place this morning before the rest of the home crumbles. it was built in 2008. the current homeowner bought it just two years ago. health officials are keeping a close eye on a mosquito-borne virus showing up in several states. three dozen cases have been

reported so far in the u.s. the latest case is in north carolina. it's a patient who contracted the virus on a trip to the caribbean, where there's been a major outbreak. the virus isn't deadly but can cause severe fever and pain. a legendary actress, ruby dee died at the age of 91. dee starred on stage and screen and television, she devoted her life to fighting injustice. she will be remembered for her long-time love affair with husband and fellow actor, ozzie davis, who died in 2005. and despite her long life in the public eye, dee's funeral will be private. i'll bet this never happened to indiana jones. a door from han solo's spaceship, the millennium falcon fell on harrison ford and broke his ankle. he is reprising his role for "star wars." it did happen to indiana jones.

he tore a ligament in his knee when filming "raiders of the lost ark." is a worker has been rescued after being stuck in a trench for eight hours. the rescue effort was made more difficult because so much rain has fallen in the last few days. at one point, the worker was trapped by dirt and mud up to his chest. he was pulled out to safety after midnight. today is a busy day in sports with the second round of the u.s. open. and the l.a. kings trying to wrap up a stanley cup championship. >> all that and three matches at the world cup. but first, last night's nba highlights and soccer from espn. >> alongside robert flores, i'm kevin connors. there's been talk about carmelo anthony might join the heat in miami to form the big four. they might need him in game five because game four in miami was ugly. >> another devastating performance by the san antonio spurs' offense. here, it's the defense. clumsy turnover by lebron james leads to a runout by patty mills. every member of the spurs played
