and good morning to you. we begin with the town in nebraska in a state of emergency this morning. >> that's right, a rare and deadly pair of tornadoes killed a young boy and nearly wiped the till of pilger right off the map. >> there are reports of weather-related damage overnight in wisconsin as the storms marched towards chicago. >> reporter: it was a terrifying sight rare li seen by the human eye caught on camera by intrepid storm chasers. >> we have multiple tornadoes on the ground. never seen anything like this. >> reporter: at least two tornadoes touched down roughly within a mile of each other. 100 miles northeast of omaha. they were reported to be deadly ef-4s generating winds up to 200 miles per hour. one estimated to have been nearly a mile wide as it bore down on the tiny town of pilger. >> we started hearing everything rip apart and the rain and the house ripping apart. yeah, pilger is in major

destruction. >> reporter: up to three-quarters of the town was either damaged or destroyed. many residents say they were stunned to be survivors. one man describing the frantic search for his friend. >> we thought he was gone for a long time. we kept yelling at him and then we dug him out. pulled the wood off hip, pulled the bricks off him and drug him out and the three of us somehow, we're all fine. it killed my dog. >> reporter: the entine town of pilger all 378 residents evacuated for the night and nebraska's governor declared a state of emergency deploying the national guard to assist with emergency response and cleanup. and with the volatile system on the move storm warnings could go up across a very wide area from minneapolis to detroit. >> and millions of americans are facing a presummer heat wave that's stoking a fresh wildfire with dots of danger. our coverage continues with accuweather meteorologist jim dickey. good morning, jim.

>> goort, devin and reena. a mild air mass continues to build on into the east on the fringes of that, dangerous thunderstorms fire once again from the dakotas across the great lakes. watch out here, the twin cities into chicago on towards detroit, gusty winds and large hail, but isolated tornadoes, on into the southwest between cooler air moving in to california to nevada and that warmth you'll see gusty winds and high fire danger. back to you. >> jim dickey, thank you. that wildfire being fueled by that. now 50% contained. evacuation orders have been lifted after hundreds of people were forced from their homes over the weekend. the fire destroyed three houses after breaking out friday night. our other major story unfolding crisis in iraq. 275 additional u.s. soldiers and marines are now in the country or mobilizing nearby. ready to help protect u.s. personnel in baghdad >> that's right and president obama is considering what other

measures to take including sending in u.s. special forces. abc's tahman bradley is in washington. good morning, tahman. >> reporter: good morning, devin. good morning, reena. the president has ordered u.s. troops into baghdad for a limited mission of protecting americans. this is not according to the white house a combat mission. as chaos spreads across iraq, president obama is weighing a rank of options. last night he informed congress that he is sending up to 275 soldiers and marines, 170 to protect americans at the embassy in baghdad. the u.s. already has a number of military assets in the region. four warships including a u.s. carrier able to launch 40 fighter jets and two ships that can fire cruise missiles. the president is also considering sending 100 special operation forces to iraq as advisers to iraqi troops. but the white house is also pursuing a diplomatic solution possibly working with iran to solve the crisis. >> we are open to any

constructive process here that could minimize the violence. >> reporter: the ferocious terror group isis continues moving through iraq seizing territories, sunni muslims with the goal of crushing the shia muslim forces of the government. as the violence worsens congress is divided about how the u.s. should respond. >> we have to get in there and work with a political solution with iraq but push back this very evil organization. >> they have to come to a political solution or else this is an endless conflict. and we don't want it -- we want to be part of an endless military conflict. >> reporter: and as you saw, nancy pierre least cyst says the president wants the iraqi government to solve the political problems that led to this before military action. >> tahman bradley live in washington, thank you. tahman. stay with abc news for the unfolding crisis in iraq coming up on "good morning america," we have team coverage with live reports from baghdad and the white house. breaking news overnight now

from seattle where a bizarre incident backed up traffic for miles on a busy highway. it started with a burping truck blocking two lanes of i-5. police say the driver had left the truck and spray painted a large green circle on the freeway. troopers tried to subdue the armed man with a stun gun. when that didn't work they shot him treated at a nearby hospital now. former new england patriot aaron hernandez wants one of the murder charges dropped against him. his lawyers insist there's no evidence linking him to the murder of his former friend odin lloyd. a tentative trial date has been september for october 6th. hernandez is accused of two other murders, plus a slew of other violent charges. new details now about that unruly passenger which forced a jetblue flight to be diverted to detroit. the cell phone video shows him shouting and resisting calls to calm down saturday on that new york to vegas flight. now the fbi says the passengers had a medical evaluation and

will not be charged in the incident. investigators say there was never any danger to the aircraft. president obama intends to sign an executive order that would ban federal contractors from discriminating against workers based on sexual orientation or gender identity. it's not known when the president will sign the order. the president is scheduled to attend an lgbt gala in new york later today. now to team usa's big win at the world cup. a late goal by substitute john brooks secured a 2-1 win against ghana. >> the big news, we should know more about a couple of injured players including josie altidore carried off with a hamstring injury and clint dempsey who scored after 29 seconds suffered a broken nose. that's really hard to see. the internet is full of wild scenes of celebration in reaction to the big victory. >> fans from coast to coast celebrating cheering, dancing, literally going crazy there. we expect much of the same will

the ignition switches in some chevy impalas, cadillac de villes and five other models can slip out of position if there's too much weight on the key chain. it's a similar problem that forced an earlier recall linked to at least 13 deaths. so it looks like fords are must have car for car thieves. the escape, edge and explorer were the top three stolen. the report only includes stolen vehicles with model years 2011 to 2013. and here's some bad news for drivers as the summer vacation season kicks into high gear the price of gas is now at its highest level of the year, the national average, $3.66 a gallon. experts say the prices could rise another 10 cents a gallon all because of the violence in iraq. and domino's pizza is launching the first ever iphone app that lets customers order by speaking. when the app goes online you order by talking to dom which is an enhanced male voice. a move designed to appeal to

across the entire upper tier of the country. roads will also be wet there across west texas. and if you're flying, airport delays are likely in minneapolis, chicago and detroit. and back to the news now, a 9-year-old wisconsin boy just wanted to see his grandma but cops say he went about it the wrong way. the youngster along with a 4-year-old companion stole a car and hit the road. that's when two teens jumped into action. >> they first noticed the car was driving erratically and pulled alongside. they couldn't believe a kid was actually at the wheel. >> there's multiple times where i thought they were going to flip that car or hit another person. >> they were all over the road. going from side to side. >> the teens were able to get the boy to safely pull over after their four-mile adventure. the pint-sized charge won't be charged. a louisiana man is under arrest after driving his suv into a bayou. the driver and a female passenger you see there were stuck in the water. he managed to climb on to the roof then two strangers came to the rescue and pulled the woman

from the car on to dry land. the driver was rescued later and was charged with bwi. and the search resumes this morning for an off-duty firefighter missing in the southern california mountains. mike herdman vanished friday during a hiking and camping trip in ventura county. a friend who reported him missing said he went chasing after his dog and never returned. he was barefoot and only wearing a t-shirt and shorts. no sign of him or the dog. baseball hall of famer tony gwynn died after a four-year battle with oral cancer. he spent his entire career with the san diego padres. notching eight battling titles and 15 trips to the all-star game. gwynn blamed his use of chewing tobacco for his cancer. he was just 54. good news for tracy morgan's health that's continuing to improve. a representative says morgan's condition has been upgraded to fair and that his personality is starting to come back. the actor/comedian was critically hurt in an accident

on the new jersey turnpike which also killed his writing partner. a driver who hit morgan's limo has been charged with manslaughter. a significant step forward in the fight against diabetes. researchers have developed a sort of bionic pancreas. under the skin sensor that constantly monitors blood sugar levels then dispenses insulin or sugar boosters as necessary. it's controlled with a smartphone app and the best part, it eliminates the need for needles. more testing gets under way next week. scientists trying to explain the mysteries of flirting have discovered some uncomfortable truth. it turns out men are pretty bad at figuring out when they're the objects of flirtation. but women are even worse. in an experiment at the university of kansas researchers found that 36% of men could identify when they were being flirted with and just 18% of women, i can't believe that, so all those coy smile, eyelash batting and gentle touches, well, they're pretty much a waste of time. >> pretty low numbers on both side. to the world cup.
