karen rogers. she has more details. >> good morning. the humidity is up a notch as you step outside. temperatures as well. it's 74 degrees right now in philadelphia. it is 68 in allentown, 70 in reading, 71 in millville. you'll remember yesterday morning some of these numbers were in the 50's so we could see quite a difference overnight. as we look at satellite 6 and action radar you can see a few slow moving storms try to trickle through the area. they're now exiting the coastline. much of the day today it's going to be dry, even this evening only calling for a scattered pop-up shower or thunderstorm to our northwest but i think the big thing that you'll know about today is you'll feel the heat, you'll feel the humidity. it's going to be quite a change from you even from yesterday. we're up a notch from there. so it's hot and humid today, the slight chance for an evening thunderstorm or a nighttime thunderstorm. it looks like the best chance for that would be up in the northwest like the lehigh valley. 91 degrees for your high today and yes, the first time we hit 90 since last september. we do have some concerns though with the heat,

humidity, there's an air quality alert, it's an ozone action day. this is the kind of day it's unhealthy for sensitive groups, the young, elderly anyone with respiratory issues. be careful if you're going outside today, matt. >> thanks karen. firefighters find a body in the ruins of a home that collapsed and caught fire in wilmington, delaware. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live at the scene along bird street with new information. katherine. >> reporter: that's right, matt, two women were taken to the hospital last night with burns but there was still one man unaccounted for after this collapse here but then around 1:00 a.m., firefighters did discover a body inside the rubble an memorial day examiner's office was called out. you can see this remains an active scene as the recovery effort was under way. heavy equipment was being used to clear the rubble. the home is located on bird street near maryland avenue in wilmington. a fire inside the two story home led to part that of building collapsing. the flames could be seen for

blocks. the fire was placed under control around 11:30 but crews continued to work at the site. chopper 6 was overhead. you could see the scope of the damage there. one neighbor said the impact was so great he thought a car had slammed into their house. he looked outside and he saw the house was burning and he called 911. he heard screams so he rushed into the back of his neighbor's home to try to save the man but he says he just couldn't get to him. >> the top level of the house was sunk into the bottom level and so i ran to the back and i saw him and i went to where he was but there was a wall in my way and i kept trying to get him to crawl closer to him so i could probably pull him and it took so long that the fire, it kept burning and burning. >> reporter: and that neighbor said the fire was just too hot and he had to get out. neighbors did report hearing an explosion but this all remains under investigation. wilmington arson task force is on the scene investigating. one firefighter was taken to the hospital with a minor

injury and as for those two victims with burns, officials have not said yet what their condition is. this remains an active scene and of course we'll bring you the updates as we get them. we're live in wilmington, katherine scott channel 6 "action news." matt. >> katherine thank you. a philadelphia store owner was shot while closing up for the night. the action cam was along the 3600 block of north seventh street in the hunting park section early this morning. police say the owner was locking his front door when two people walked up to him and should there him twice. while the victim was lying on the sidewalks the men went through his pockets, then ran off. police have not said what they stole. the store owner's wife drove him to the hospital where he's in stable condition. detectives are hoping to get a good look at the robbers from surveillance video. two tornadoes rumbled into a nebraska town at the same time. the twisters were only a mile from each other. a five-year-old child died in all the chaos and 19 other people were injured in this widespread destruction.

erin o'hearn will have more on the story. erin what's the very latest that we're hearing. >> reporter: and, tam, unfortunately these twisters wiped out more than half of the town of pogorn nebraska 100 miles north of ohman the scenes coming out of this small community this morning are just shocking. many people lost their homes and nearly every home in the area sustained some sort of damage. take a look at this still picture because it really captures the devastation and the massive size of this tornado and its intensity. a spokesperson for the national weather service says these dual tornadoes are unusual because both appear to have roughly the same strength and in most cases, one tornado tends to be larger and more powerful than the other and the bigger cyclone grows stronger as the smaller one weakens but in this case, these two tracked together for an unusually long period of time and were both the same

intensity, which is why you saw so much devastation in the area. authorities say the first happened around 2:45 yesterday and took out several power lines and the second a short time later. and some residents are in disbelief over what little is left of their town. >> started yelling then all the shingles started blowing through my yard. i lost my hot tub and then everything lifted off and the heater smashed over me and my buddy. >> there was three houses which are gone. there were three houses on the opposite side of the block that are gone. >> reporter: what about your sister's houseism total 19 people were injured and as we mentioned a five-year-old child was killed. residents were evacuated but are expected to return this morning, but of course a long road ahead of them with cleanup and the emotional

"good morning america" will have a report from nebraska coming up at 7:00 a.m., that's right after this newscast. also happening dat superintendent of philadelphia schools will send out a call to action to city council. he wants them to commit to helping city schools by their june 30 is this budget deadline. superintendent william hite along with school reform commission chairman bill green and other local public school advocates say city council must act now. they say council has the power to prevents the district from laying off more teachers and slashing additional services. school officials say the $120 million that council recently approved still falls $96 million short of what the district really needs from the city. the districts is also seeking more money from the state. matt. >> time for your first look at business. general motor center city recalling more than 3 million vehicles. the automaker says it has a problem with ignition switches. a problem that has led to earlier recalls and may have

led to 13 deaths. the switches can move from run to accessory by accident. that shuts off the engines, knocks out power steering, brakes which could lead to the driver losing control. the vehicles impact ready chevrolet impalas cadillac devils and five other models from a of all of them and their model years on 6abc.com. gm is telling motorists to run cars only with the ignition key itself until those repairs are made. president obama travels to pittsburgh today for a speech on technological innovations. the president's approval rating on the economy plunge d to 39 percent in a recent poll. wall street treaded water on monday in part due to the soaring cost of crude oil related to the unrest in iraq. futures are trading higher right now. something new is come to go atlantic city. mayor don guardian says ac will have a lgbt friendly beach at park place this summer. there were also be 3lgbt themed events in the coming

months. guardian is atlantic city's first only gay mayor. tam, back to you. >> okay, thank you, matt. the man who cheated death again this time during the gary papa run on sunday has spoken to "action news." 64 year old professor yeachiam gal was taking part in sunday's run in honor of being five year survivor of stage four prostate cancer. but gal collapsed during the run. he was not breathing and did not have a pulse when a couple of nurses, a doctor and kathy papa, gary's widow who is also a nurse rushed to his aid. they took turns giving gal cpr until an ambulance made it to the scene. >> i was lucky that, you know, i mean all those good people were running around me: i think those wonderful people, they actually saved my life and i want to say it's not broken anymore, they are fixing it anymore. thank you to what they did. >> gal is now being treated for a heart murmur and he's already looking forward since he says he does not expect all of this to keep him from

karen is here. david is off. hit 90. >> it's been awhile. we're expecting to hit 91 today, 94 today. the heat is definitely on. let's take a look at storm tracker 6 double scan. we had late showers and thunderstorms that moved through in the overnight hours. we can still see a few showers especially east of the city of philadelphia. going in closer we see them through medford lakes, through hammonton and surf city, seaside heights but we can see the heaviest stuff is off the coast coastline and this is exiting as we speak. the rest your daytime hours are dry today. let's head outside and show you what it looks like. sky 6 looking live in hd. you're feeling the change from yesterday. it feels humid, even as you step outside already but we are only going to see a fair amount of clouds as we look live on sky 6 in hd how about that temperature. 74 degrees in some spots its a good 12 degrees warmer than it was yesterday at this point. the dewpoint is 66 degrees. the winds are southwesterly pumping up that hot and humid air and the pressure 30.05-inches.

as we look at satellite 6 and action radar we can see that little cluster of showers that are moving off the coastline and we're just left with some cloud cover resulting from that. and as we look to the west you can see the storms that took some severe turns out in the midwest and certainly through nebraska. we're looking at them now facing chicago. we're not expecting severe storms in the early hours this business out to the northwest but chicago is going to get hit with very heavy rain. that tracks and just misses us just to the north but it's associated cold front will swing through and give us the chance for some nasty weather come wednesday. so, today the summer preview is really the thing you'll notice the most. it's hazy, hot and humid with high pressure just continuing to purge up more of a south-southwesterly flow and we're going to get 90's today and tomorrow. the heat of the -- the center of the heat will be right along the i-95 corridor. so, you really are going to feel it more so than we have so far this year. your exclusive accuweather seven day forecast, it is hot, it is humid, a high of

91 degrees. just the slight chance for a shower or thunderstorm later on tonight. that will be most especially to the northwest. and then tomorrow even hotter, 94, very humid and this is when we have the chance for some pretty strong gusty thunderstorms. it looks like the best chance for that would be late in the day so something to watch at the end of the day on wednesday into the evening hours. thursday it's still sticky and still unsettled and 87 degrees. friday partly sunny skies, 84. you can't rule out a shower. we get that heat down. saturday clouds and sun, 82 but it now looks like the weekend is going to remain unsettled a front that we thought might sweep through gets hung up through the area so what does that mean for you? you're going to see a good amount of clouds on both weekend days with the chance for a couple of showers or a thunderstorm around. temperatures just in the low 80's so we're watching for that and saturday is the official arrival of summer and not going to feel terribly summer like with temperatures in the low 80's. monday it's partly sunny skies, 82 on monday, it could still be a bit unsettled.

>> we'll be ready. thank you karen. a new update on the search for a pair of bonnie and clyde style crooks. 21 year old samea 's petit robbed two men. one victim was shot in the leg during one of the holdups. the search for petite's accomplice continues. a chester police cruiser collided. this was the scene at second and flower street. the chester police officer was not hurt. the driver of the suv was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. an investigation is under way to determine who is at fault. penndot is relocating one of its driver's license centers, the facility at south columbus boulevard will close this saturday june 21st. operations at the new location at 330 west oregon avenue will open on tuesday june 24th. penndot says the new facility offers better parking and additional seating for

let's put up the national picture. 1,295 flights over the lower 48 right now, you see the midwest out there. again, slob the area where you're going to see the most delays weather-related today. up and down the east coast could see thundershowers today including in philadelphia. in atlanta looks like only in the evening are you going to see problems so hartsfield-jackson could see delays in the evening. that's where the phillies game is today. could see a delay for that. over in houston thundershowers expected as well as out in salt lake city. san francisco is the only place where we're not expecting thundershowers but expecting weather related delays because they should have some low cloud cover in the morning and then that could also extends into the evening hours so could see a delay or two because of the low clouds in san francisco. tam, back to you. >> okay, matt, thank you. the young delaware man who saved his mother from an armed intruder is speaking out about the attack. the incident happened at the foxwood apartments in newark last tuesday. 19-year-old roger puff wood says their neighbor kicked in the door and shot his mother patricia in the hip.

he grabbed his mother and went to a bedroom and barricaded the door. he says despite being afraid he flu that he had to protect his mother. >> it was my natural instinct to protect my mom first. everybody say protect yourself. my natural instinct to protect my mom before anything else. >> brunson killed himself as police arrived on the scene. patricia calls her son her hero. >> a flight from los angeles brought a special passenger to philadelphia international airport. >> ♪ >> good morning everyone and taking a look at some of the activity early on here at philadelphia international airport. 4:45 is the time, 74 degrees on city avenue. forecasted temperature 91 degrees. it will be our first time hitting 90 since september s hot and humid. chance of storms here and there so get that storm tracker 6 app. low temperature 73 degrees. happening today, cooper university hospital will announce a new vip priority program for veterans. the medical center in camden says the program will offer same day service for vets who are seeking primary care visits. the effort is in response to the nation's va hospital scandal. audits of 731va sites found that 57,000 vets had to wait at least 90 days to see a va doctor. the average wait for new patient primary care visits at the philadelphia va facility was 43 days and about 25 days

in new jersey. >> honors went out last night to some of the area's outstanding scholars. our amy buckman emceed the scholarship awards given out by the ronald mcdonald house charitys in center city. the program honors students who excel in academics and communities involvement but need financial help for college. since 1985, the group has awarded $52 million in scholarship. two dozen philadelphia teens got a boost for their education. they're receiving awards from the chuck cassidy scholarship program to attend saint hubert's and father judge high school. the fund was established in honor of philadelphia police officer chuck cassidy who was killed while answering a holdup call in 2007. our sarah bloomquist was there for the ceremony. >> news personalities everywhere. pete rose guest managed a professional baseball team last night. he served as skipper of the bridgeport bluefish in connecticut. they play in the independent atlantic league. rose who was banned from the major leagues due to gambling was able to take this one game
