>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala program. meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪ >> good morning everyone, it's 5 o'clock on this tuesday june 17th. we're following a breaking news story. >> tragic new developments out of delaware. fire crews made a gruesome discovery while going through the rubble of a collapsing. >> new video of a nasty crash involving an ambulance and a taxicab and witnesses say they know what might have caused it. >> a plan was sucker punched while waiting for the trolley. now police need your help catching this brazen bandit. >> the heat is on.

david is off. karen is here along with matt pelman in traffic. good morning. >> good morning. you already feel the difference when you step outside. the humidity way up from yesterday and yes, the temperatures as well. 73 degrees already right now in philadelphia. in the upper 60's in the lehigh valley. 69 in trenton. 71 in millville. some of these temperatures about 12 degrees warmer than they were yesterday in the morning so you really feel the difference stepping outside. looking at at light six and action radar you can see we have a fair amount of clouds over the region and a small cluster of showers that moved through the overnight hours. with our live radar with double scan we can see exactly where these showers are right now so here's the difference with our powerful radar seeing right now they're just exiting the coastline so not affecting much at all, just a leftover sprinkle is all we're dealing with but we can see the clouds that are left resulting from that. what you can expect in the day ahead we're going to see a good amount of sunshine today but it is going to be hazy, hot and humid, 91 degrees for your high temperature. the hottest so far this year with just a slight chance for

a shower or thunderstorm popping up and especially in the northwest suburbs many details on that coming up in the seven day forecast. >> showers on my way in lasted all of about, maybe 30 seconds. good morning to you, karen rogers. just enough to get the windshield wipers going a couple times but for the most part our roadways are dry so far on this tuesday morning. and perhaps because of the sticky conditions the overnight work crews are out of here early along 95. northbound side. but in their wake they left behind some new signs and some new cones here by girard avenue. we told you how they were going to be shifting the lanes around just a little bit and extending that northbound construction zone up toward allegheny avenue. they did that. at this point the traffic is moving fine. again it's just basically an extension of that construction zone that was already here by girard avenue. on the big picture, things are fine along 95, the schuylkill and the roosevelt boulevard. in chinatown had that crash involving an ambulance at eighth and vine. that should be on the way out. and we had a disabled vehicle on the southbound northeast extension approaching mid

county. tam told i was bitting a. that's gone but there's still a work zone on the northeast extension northbound past quakertown taking out the right lane. then you'll encounter more construction as you travel north near the lehigh valley interchange and down in wilmington we have that awful fire and building collapse from the overnight hours along bird street at maryland avenue. a chunk of maryland is blocked off between beach and linden streets so coming into wilmington this morning maybe use route two and lancaster avenue instead and tam, i know you have more details on what occurred there in the first state. >> indeed we do, matt. and awful is the right word for it. these are again breaking development there is out of delaware. overnight as matt just mentioned fire crews did find body in the rubble of a building that had collapsed. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live on the scene in wilmington. she's got an update. good morning, katherine. >> reporter: good morning, tam. investigators are still trying to determine what exactly happened but we know one man has died and two women were taken to the hospital last night with burns but we haven't been told yet what

their condition is now. it all happened after this fire and collapse here in wilmington last night. you can see this remains an active scene. more than six hours after the fire began. the two story home was located on bird street near maryland avenue and it starter around 10:30 last night. a fire and then the building collapsed. the flames could be seen for blocks. the fire was placed under control around 11:30 but crews continued to work at the site as the man remained unaccounted for and around 1:00 a.m. a body was found inside the rubble and the medical examiner's office was called out. one neighbor said it sounded like an explosion and he could feel the force of it in his home. he called 911 and he heard screams for help. he says the women were already out when he rushed into the back of house to try to save the man but he says the flames were just too fierce and he couldn't get a clear path to his neighbor. >> i came out the house and went into the building from the back, tried to save the man. there was two other people in the house. they were already out and the man was in the house but the

fire was so hot i had to come out. and i had to leave him. >> reporter: and back here live on the scene where we are awaiting an update if the fire chief, neighbors reported hearing an explosion but the cause of this all remains under investigation. wilmington arson task force is on the scene. one firefighter did have a minor injury. he was taken to the hospital for evaluation. we are live in wilmington, katherine scott, channel 6 "action news." >> thanks for those new details katherine. also developing this morning two people were injured in a crash involving an ambulance and a taxicab in the chinatown section of the city. this happened at the intersection of eighth and vine streets at 2:30 a.m. the life star ambulance smashed into the side of the cab. both the cab driver and a passenger inside were injured and hospitalized. now, witnesses say the traffic light at the intersection was giving both a red and green light for traffic causing confusion for drivers. police are investigating. and in delaware county,

police need your help in finding someone who they believe was playing the so-called knockout game. that punch as you heard was followed by laughter at septa's aaron ming avenue trolley stop in upper darby back on wednesday. police say a group of teens pressured someone to attack the 58-year-old victim who was punched in the head. the video showed up on social media. police have found the victim and now want to punish the person who threw that punch. we are also following developing news from the white house. president obama is weighing a larger military presence in iraq. the president notified congress that he made a employ about -- may deploy about 100 u.s. troops to join the 170 already in baghdad. they're providing security and support for u.s. assets but are not being used to fight in combat. the conditions are worsening in and around baghdad. sunni muslim insurgents are threatening to overthrow the

shiite government. the white house insists america will not be dragged into another. >> it is almost 5:07. happening today new jersey governor chris christie is expanding a life saving pilot program for victims of heroin overdoses. the governor will al nouns police in every county in the state and state troopers will now be trained to administer narcan. the drug is injected through the nose to reverse potentially deadly overdoze. official say the pilot program in ocean and monmouth counties have saved about 40 lives. >> accuweather now and karen says when you step outside you'll feel that something is amiss out there. it's just hot. >> you do. and you're walking outside and you're like it's warmer than yesterday its kind of sticky and it's just beginning. storm tracker 6 double scan around the region showing we have just a couple sprinkles that are exiting the coastline from the light showers that moved through in the late night hours and here we can see in a closer view they've already moved out of medford lakes, we see them pushing towards seaside heights surf city and atlantic city. a little scattered sprinkle.

the rest of the daytime is dry. let's head outside and show you what it looks like right now as sky 6 looks live. we are a fair amount of cloud cover as those little showers move through and also it's going to be pretty hazy today and looking live right now at the center city skyline, that temperature already 73 degrees. already in the low 70's. the dewpoint is 67 degrees. the winds are south-southwesterly at 6 miles an hour and it's a westerly flow that's going to help to bump those temperatures up today. the pressure 30.03-inches. looking at satellite satellite d action radar we had clouds over our region but looking to the west we can see the complex of storms that caused severe weather through nebraska in particular. now we're looking at chicago getting hammered by this. this is going to cut across the country. you can see it's going to head more towards the north so it will be a better chance for areas of the north to get a shower tonight but we are going to see this cool front associated with this drop through our area and spark the chance for gusty storms on

wednesday but i think the big thing you'll notice dan tomorrow, a summer preview. we've got that jet stream up in can dan that's allowing the high pressure to act as a heat purge and purge up that southwesterly flow today. hazy, hot and humid not just today but tomorrow as well. temperatures in the 90's in the i-95 corridor really the center of the heat where you'll be getting those temperatures well into the 90's. let's look at your exclusive accuweather 7-day. today it's hot and it's humid. 91 degrees for your high. we have a fair amount of clouds early on and just the chance for a shower or a thunderstorm later on tonight. i think the best chance of that would be pretty late tonight and in the northwest. and then tomorrow hot and this is the better chance for some gusty thunderstorms. you real are going to feel sticky, that temperature up to 94 degrees its going feel hotter than that and then we're tracking gusty thunderstorms. the best chance for that would be late in the day into the evening hours so we're going to watch for. that on thursday still sticky, 87 degrees, unsettled with a

great improvement in that his personality is coming back as well. >> new this morning, a 66-year-old connecticut woman has died after the first floor of her cluttered home collapsed down into the basement. beverly mitchell's body was discovered while removing debris in her home. officers claim the woman was a hoarder and refused help from social service officials over the years. police are looking to see if all that hoarding actually had a hand in her death. they say when they found her the clutter was stacked waste lie. a wild ride in business bliss a stolen car with a nine year old behind the wheel and a a four year old in the front seat. caden duck says he was driving when he looked at the car next to him and noticed something doesn't look right. police say the two kids will just stolen this red car. duck followed them as they dodged oncoming traffic and swerved all over the highway. the teenager and a friend finally got the youngsters to pull over. the boys told police that they were on their way to grandma's house. >> the phillies face the braves in atlanta again

tonight where thunderstorms could break out. if the game is somehow delayed or canceled maybe those phillies could use that some rest. they played 13 innings last night. jonathan papelbon blew his first save since the first week of the season and when they got to that lucky 13th inning with the store tied at one-one the phillies woke up. ryan howard helped knock in one of five runs giving the phillies a six to one victory. the u.s. soccer team has opened its underdog quest in the world cup with a big win. they scored first against ghana, just 29 seconds into last night's match. it was the fifth fastest goal in world cup history. ghana tied it up at one late in the match but four minutes later 20 year old john brooks got the winner for the u.s. the americans come away with a two to one victory. ghana had eliminated the u.s. in the last two world cups. the u.s. faces portugal on sunday. >> the look on his face. he said he had a dream that he did it and that's exactly what he did.
