a difference in cancer care. >> up first weather and traffic. david is off. karen is here along with matt. good morning. >> good morning. it's a hot and humid day today and the national weather service has a heat advisory in effect. it goes into effect at noon today and lasts until 7 o'clock. go ahead and take a look through the region right now for the i-95 corridor where the heat index, what it's going to feel like in the upper 90's in the height of the afternoon and looking at the temperatures right now, 79 degrees already in philadelphia. 74 in allentown. 75 in millville. and it doesn't feel oppressively humid just yet. satellite 6 and action radar slowing that we had some showers that tried to pull down into our region and just really fell apart but they did leave us off with some cloud cover so there's a little bit of breeze and a few clouds out there kind of helping you out so far. we can see the showers and thunderstorms building out to the west and we do have a chance for one of those storms coming through, especially late tonight. here's a look at your day ahead. by 9:00 a.m., 84 degrees. by noon, 991. by 3:00 p.m., 94. by 6:00 p.m., 93 coming down

from your high of 96. we'll watch for the chance of a thunderstorm popping up late today but i think the best chance would really be in the late time nighttime hours so we're watching for. that i'll show you future tracker 6 and kind of explain how this day is going to unfold in a few minutes. matt. >> some of our vehicles this morning are saying no thanks. i don't think so. little too warm out there for me. we've had a number of broken down vehicles already on this wednesday morning. one of them was right here in chester county on the southbound side of 202 approaching 29, the great valley interchange. police came out, took care of the disabled vehicle. both lanes now reopened through the work zone and the small delay that we had has thinned out as well. but we still have an issue in pottstown, wilson street shut down between farmington avenue and popular street. that was an overnight crash that brought down a pole. maybe stay up on diamond street or eighth street by lincoln elementary to get around that situation. meanwhile another broken down vehicle here on the ramp from

the southbound side of route 1 the roosevelt boulevard extension to ridge avenue. it's off to the side of the ramp. penndot is there helping out so you can squeeze by none delays on the boulevard itself so far this morning. but delays are just starting to form here on 95 in the great northeast. southbound approaching cottman in that work zone we're starting to bunch up then it bunches up again farther south from allegheny into girard. we have another issue with another downed pole in cape may courthouse. 47 blocked both ways north of 612, carter street, there near hall's carpet care. maybe stay over on route nine to get around that blockage on this wednesday morning. tam. >> thank you, matt. and we are beginning with a developing story coming to us from berks county where an off duty police officer has been involved in a violent road rage incident. this is some new video just in from the scene. there is a heavy police presence along route 61. that's where the district attorney says a group of men in one car got out and began beating up a lone driver. that lone driver then

reportedly opened fire on his attackers. one person has been wounded. the district would not say exactly what role the off duty officer had in this incident but stay with "action news" and 6abc.com for updates. >> the man u.s. authorities say masterminded the ambush of a u.s. embassy in libya was captured in a secret nighttime raid. he is on his way to face american justice nearly two years after the attack that killed a u.s. ambassador. "action news" reporter erin o'hearn is live in the satellite center with more details. erin. >> matt, this is a big get for the u.s. government. since the attack on the u.s. embassy back in 2012, the obama administration has received harsh criticism for failing to capture anyone involved in the attacks that killed u.s. ambassador chris stevens and three other americans. now, this issue has become somewhat of a political football. on sunday, though, american military and law enforcement personnel operating in libya captured ahmed abu khatallah.

this is a joints operation between the fbi and u.s. special forces. u.s. officials said that abu khatallah is being held on a docked ship in the mediterranean sea but is expected to be tried in federal court on terror charges. while the president says this capture sends a clear message to terrorists the administration's plan to try him in federal court is not sitting well with some congressional republicans who have attempted to hammer the administration about the killings in benghazi. >> when americans are attacked no matter how long it takes, we will find those responsible and we will bring them to justice. >> there has been a tendency in this administration as you know to treat this like a law enforcement matter. read them their rights and get them a lawyer. i hope they're not doing that. the most valuable thing we can get from this terrorist is information. >> senate minority leader mitch mcconnell went on to say

abu khatallah needs to be interrogated extensively. he is expected to be questioned by u.s. officials possibly over the next few hours and the next few days. of course, the key questions, who else way involved in the attack and who exactly ordered the attack on the u.s. embassy, but the white house did reiterate that this is going to be tried in federal court. i'm erin o'hearn live in the sat center. matt, back to you. >> karen thanks. delaware lawmakers will hold a hearing on whether to remove criminal penalties for adult marijuana possession. the public safety and homeland security committee will consider a proposal that would make possession of 1 ounce of marijuana a civil offense. the punishment would be a fine that is similar to a traffic ticket. as it stands now someone convicted of possessing an ounce of marijuana in delaware faces a fine of $1,150 and up to six months in jail. >> it is almost 6:07 and this may not make for a happy new year. come january you'll pay a little bit more to use the new

jersey turnpike. pennsylvania turnpike and some will end up paying a little bit more than others. maribel aber is live at the nasdaq in times square. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, tam. the turnpike's commission approved a 5 percent increase to take effect next january. the most common toll for passenger vehicle will rise to $1.09 with ez pass that's a nickel higher than what it costs today. the commission says ez pass customers will continue to save 35 percent on tolls. stock markets ended in the green tuesday. the dow bounced between gains and losses early in there session before turning higher posting a third straight game. futures pointing to a higher open. beware of exploding wine bottles. several bottles of prosecco brut have spontaneously exploded in stores in recent weeks. the bottles can explode with the glass shattering or the cork shooting out according to the pennsylvania liquor control board. the wine has been removed from store shelves but if you have a bottle at home the board

recommends wrapping it in newspaper and two trash bags before throwing it out. popeye's louisiana kitchen now officially owns the recipes that made its food popular. the company maid paid $43 million to the family of the chain's late founder in exchange it gets the recipes he created in the 1970's. popeye's had been paying as much as $3 million a year in royal tease to the family of the founder. tam, got to say love that chicken at popeye's. >> there's something about the crisp on there chicken. it's not good for you but boy, does it taste good. >> she did the jingle. >> she did it well i might add. all right, storm tracker storm 6 live double scan looking around the region not seeing any sign of showers or thunderstorms just yet. that will be later on today and tonight. let's head on outside and show you what it looks like. we've got a beautiful shot. yeah, we see some clouds out there but we see that sunshine as well. looking over the ben franklin bridge in hd and we had saw that it tried to slip through and leftover cloud cover

through the region. 79 degrees already in philadelphia. the dewpoint is 65. once you get above 60 you start to feel sticky, so you can feel that out there but what's saving us a little bit today, a breeze at 10 miles an hour so we'll take anything we can get and you do notice that today so it helps you out a little bit. pressure 29.89-inches. satellite 6 and action radar showing the cloud cover that dropped through the region. we had some showers that fell apart. they didn't do anything much in our area but we're left with cloud cover. we'll see sunshine filling in for sure with sun and clouds today and you can see the showers and thunderstorms building out to the west along with a frontal boundary. and we do have the chance for a shower or a thunderstorm popping through especially very late today. now, future tracker 6 showing at 7:30 tonight it's spotty at best. we can see a couple of cells popping through here or there. we advance this a little bit to 11 o'clock and when cecily tynan on the air we'll see some showers and thunderstorms popping through some of our region and lasting into the wee hours in the morning and the reason we're watching that so closely is that there's a severe weather threat from the

storm prediction center. it's just a slight risk for part of our region, the area you see in yellow out to the west. so, in lancaster, berks, lehigh, carbon, monroe counties, you've got a slight risk for severe weather including those winds over 58 miles an hour. you might remember yesterday it looked like our whole region was blanketed in this severe weather threat. now it's just towards the western communities that we're watching. it is a hot one today. let's show you how the day is going to unfold. 8:00 a.m. 82, 1188, 2:00 p.m., 93 by 5:00 p.m. 95 coming down from your high of 96. trying to get relief at the shore. you could do that yesterday with the see sea breeze. the trouble is the westerly flow is going to be pretty strong today. by 11:00 a.m. 84, 3:00 p.m. 90. you get more of a land breeze today. sunny and hot even at the shore, not quite as hot as it will be here but hot nonetheless. let's look right now at your exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, it is hot but breezy. 96 degrees for your high. that would be a record set on this date. then showers and thunderstorms, got a chance for that especially tonight and then tomorrow a bit

using lethal injection. in georgia a teen kill are was put to death and in missouri a man convicted of shooting his girlfriend and killing two of her friends in then 96 was executed. clayton locket was put to death in oklahoma. jailers used a three drug cocktailing that seemed to fail. locket eventually died of a heart attack. police in berks county searching for the driver of a pickup truck spotted putting live animals out of the vehicle. it happened last friday 13 in syncing spring. a man threw a kitten in the middle of the street as his truck sped by. that kitten and another cat were found laying dead on the road. the driver hasn't been identified. he was 17 in a dark blue pickup with a cap on the back. >> amazon has been working on a mystery product one that it plans to reveal today. abc's devin dwyer has tech bikes. >> reporter: amazon entering the phone. it's expected to launch its

weather. i'll explain who will be affected by that in the seven day forecast in a minute matt. >> karen at least we have that breeze. good morning to you. not really breezing along on a lot these highs ways any more. we have several issues including this crash on 422 westbound side near first avenue. the ambulance has left the scene but police are still out here along with the one vehicle that was involved in the crash. good news is both westbound lanes are getting by. eastbound is now kind of a slow go from approaching oaks on into 23 with just some normal morning volume. off 422 in pottstown downed pole from an overnight crash blocking wilson street between farmington avenue and popular street. stick with diamond or eighth as alternates. on the big picture our broken down vehicle on the ramp from the boulevard southbound to ridge avenue is out of the way but there's some traffic light troubles in northeast philly at the intersection of robbins and tours day. as you can see our normal delays are forming along the schuylkill and i-95. also getting word of a vehicle fire in trenton. probably want to avoid the intersection of anderson

street and ash more avenue. in middle township cape may county a downed pole from an overnight crash on 47. block both ways by on carter street. in wilmington, three extra minutes now on that northbound travel time from 495 up to namaans road. people detouring again once again because of the 495 closure. we'll see lots of people headed down dover over the course of the next few days. the fire fly music festival is this weekend so big delays on one, 13 and scarborough road. tam. >> thank you, matt. well a heat advisory has been issued for much of the delaware valley. the heat index is expected to hit the mid 90's today. and the soaring temperatures have sent thousands scurrying down to the jersey shore. ocean city's beaches are crowded with people taking a vacation week and others just driving to the shore for the day trying to get out of the heat. it was plenty of fun to be had along the bay for recent graduates of hatboro horsham high school. they used wave runners to cool themselves down.

defendants in the main line school drug ring. daniel mcgrath, christian euler, willow orr, read cohen and dominic curcio are charged with possessing and distributing drugs at five high schools 13 colleges. investigators say they were low level dealers in a much bigger enterprise run by 18-year-old timothy brooks and 25-year-old neil scott. the pair are graduates of the haverford school one of the country's most prestigious prep schools. >> new this morning, north jersey prosecutors are looking into a school hacking case. it put some average students at the head of the class. someone broke into the records system at orange high school to improve class grades and attendance. the students who received better gpa's as a result of the stunt say they are now being punished for the change even though they claimed to have had nothing to do with it. education officials still don't know exactly who is behind the hack attack. >> 6:35 now. a community in camden is finally celebrating the fruits of its labor.

in center city. let's check the numbers for you as you're headed out the door. it's hard warm. we're looking at a temperature of 79 degrees. that dewpoint 65. that's the moisture in the atmosphere. any time you get over 60 degrees you really feel the humidity. so at 65 it's feeling sticky. the winds though a bit bigger than yesterday so winds out of the southwest at 10 miles an hour. a bit more of a breeze so that's helping a little bit. the pressure 29.89-inches. satellite 6 and action radar slowing we had some showers try to pull through, they just fell apart. we're left with residual cloud cover here but we'll see sunshine and clouds and certainly you could see those showers and thunderstorms building out to our west. we've got the chance for a thunderstorm popping through our region and future tracker 6 showing not a whole lot of activity during the day. this is a look at 7:30 and this particular model showed some cells trying to build in there. more so by 11 o'clock tonight. when cecily tynan is on the air with the 11 o'clock news we'll likely see some cells here and the trouble is any one of these could be quite strong. they last until the overnight

hours and the storm prediction center issued a slight risk for severe weather for our western communities. so f-you're out here in lancaster, in berks, in lehigh and carbon and monroe you've got a chance for some severe weather today with any one of these storms that pops through especially the threat for damaging winds of over 58 miles an hour. you might remember yesterday it looked like much of the region could be affected by severe weather so now it's retreated to just our western suburbs but something we're watching very closely. your accuweather forecast showing how this is going to expand through the day with the heat by 8:00 a.m., 82. by 11:00 a.m., 88. by 2:00 p.m., 93 coming down from your high of 96 at 5:00 p.m. it will be about 95 with a slight chance for a shower or thunderstorm at 5:00 i think again the better chance would be later on tonight. it's lard to find relief at the shore because we have more of a westerly flow today. it's a little bit stronger so it's hard to develop any sort of sea breeze and we expect sunny and hot conditions by 11:00 a.m., 84 sitting on the beach. by 3:00 p.m., about 90. you know those bugs always get you when you get that westerly flow, too.

let's look at your exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast. it's hot but breezy at least. 96 degrees for your high temperature. tomorrow we get more scattered showers and thunderstorms. that's when that front actually comes through tomorrow. 87 degrees for your high. by friday it's pretty nice because it's less humid, it's less hot, 84, and then we're dry. can't beat that. it doesn't stay for the weekend, though. that front that retreats kind of comes back into our region so saturday some spotty showers around, even though summer arrives, a high of only 79. sunday clouds and some sunshine, 80 degrees with still the threat of a couple of showers on monday partly sunny skies and 84 with a shower. and even on tuesday, we're looking at things really warming up with sunshine and 88 degrees. for your high. so the heat is really on today. heat advisory in effect so take it easy this afternoon, maybe check on your elderly friends and the pets. >> good idea. >> thank you, karen. new stories are up next here on "action news" including the near miss for a new york neighborhood as a plane came crashing down from the sky. >> former star of the jersey shore gets himself into

tie a record for this day. >> let's go over to matt pelman see what the roads are looking like. this morning it's been pretty good. not that much bad on the roads. >> hear me this time? you got me. here we go. yes, we haven't had a ton of problems on the roads this morning, tam and matt, just a few and a little situation here to watch out for as i was saying going into the break in northeast philadelphia, traffic lights are dark here at the intersection of robbins street and torresdale avenue in the great northeast and so a lot of people are just kind of breezing -- like that school bus -- just breezing through the intersection. better to treat this like a four-way stop like that person did so that you don't run into someone else, kind of common sense but sometimes you need to be reminded. so that's the situation there. we see that on the big picture as well as the construction that continues at the tacony palmyra bridge. could cause delays at any time. and we have delays of course on 95 southbound by cottman 26 miles per hour. then you're really on the brakes from bridge street on into girard. also seeing those delays starting to form over on the schuylkill expressway. here's what that looks like

live. this is the westbound, little bit of slowing as you exit at south street. otherwise you're slow farther west from the boulevard out to gladwyne. it's basically just all the normal stuff on i-76. but here's something abnormal in west conshohocken again balligomingo road is shut down between portland street and 23 front street. they're taking down some more of the trees in that area so 320 swedeland road by gsk is the way to get around it until they reopen it this afternoon. also trinity lane shut down before independence day, south gulph road gets you around that construction. had reports of a vehicle fire in trenton this morning along anderson street at ash more avenue and that's a good intersection to avoid. and in middle township cape may county a little change with this. we have that downed pole and wires was blocking 47 in both directions. now it's just northbound past 612 carter street to get around that blockage that continues maybe stay over on route 9 through cape may courthouse instead. tam. >> okay, thank you, matt. fire crews are on the scene of a blaze in berks county. take a look at this new video.

flames broke out at the bird's borrow materials quarry after 12:30 this morning. several fire departments had to be called in to come help to battle this fire including some from chester county. there are no reports of injuries nonword yet on what caused the fire. the quarry produces a wide range of crushed stone products. >> happening today, president obama will brief top congressional leaders on the growing crisis in iraq. the meeting comes as sectarian violence is on the rise in the country. a car bomb in the pro-government shiite strong hold of sadr see killed 12 people and wounded 30 others. in baqouba militia men killed detainees an early word on the briefing indicates the president will not call for any air strikes any time soon saying there are few clear targets for the u.s. to strike at the fast moving sunni insurgency. >> a plane crashed in the backyard of a long island home and the pilot was killed not

before he did one last history we can act. witnesses say he appeared to do his all to steer that plane away from homes. the plane disintegrated upon impact. a woman and a baby were in a home just a few feet away. thankfully they got out okay. the visibilities was poor at the time of the crash and the 53-year-old pilot did call for help. the ntsb is trying to determine exactly what caused the tragedy. >> this story is also new. the developer of a million dollar shore house on prime new england property has suddenly realized it is encroaching on protected turf. the developer chose a water front estate on protected park land in rhode island in 2009. the builder didn't notice the error until two years later saying it was an innocent surveying mistake. the court battle went all the all the way to the state supreme court. the developer is under an order to remove the entire home. >> 6:46. a preview of "gma" is coming up next.
