floods inducing mudslides in minnesota. 100-yard chunk of hill giving way at the university of minnesota medical center before crashing into the mississippi river forcing evacuations and prompting roads to close. >> just a big mudslide coming down. >> reporter: minnesota is known as the land of 10,000 lakes. this morning, it's got a few more. >> are you going to get home? >> i need to swim there. >> i lost everything. it came through like niagara falls. >> reporter: a state of emergency in 35 counties after 4 inches of rain fell just in minneapolis on thursday. the most ever recorded on a single day in june. and now reports that 1,000 homes have been damaged by flooding south of minneapolis. >> when is the rain going to end? >> reporter: this road outside minneapolis becoming an impassable waterfall. floods swallowing parts of south dakota too. crews there working frantically overnight building a levee across this highway, interstate 29, the big sioux river expected to crest as early as this morning.

i wish i could say it's over but it's not. more rain this weekend. this is not what has fallen but what will fall by sunday. 2 to 3 inches in that red zone. we're concerned about some of the rivers in iowa. so i'll be talking about this plus a cooldown in the northeast coming up. >> okay, ginger, welcome back. we turn to the shocking details of an anthrax accident at the cdc. about 75 workers there could have been exposed to the biological weapon that is so often deadly and abc's linzie janis is at the cdc headquarters in atlanta. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, george. a very serious and dangerous mistake was made here at the cdc in a bioterrorism lab and as a result, dozens of staffers may have been exposed to the deadly bacteria. this morning, approximately 75 employees at the centers for disease control are being offered treatment after possibly being exposed to live anthrax. the cdc where scientists study the deadliest germs and diseases in the world closing and

decontaminating labs after a breach in lab procedures between june 6th and 13th might have led to leaking improperly deactivated samples of anthrax into the air. the cdc also saying that improper deactivation procedures were performed before the strain was shared between their labs leading some workers to wear less protective gear than recommended when handling anthrax telling abc news "we are devastated. it is unacceptable. we are going to find out what went wrong, and we are going to fix it." according to the cdc, if anthrax is inhaled and left untreated, about 85% of cases result in fatalities. even with treatment, the fatality rate can be as high as 45%. >> it's very disconcerting because it's one of the most secure biological facilities in the world. >> reporter: this morning, the 75 employees are being offered treatment with antibiotics. the cdc says no one is showing any signs of illness, but notes that symptoms could take up to

two months to appear. the workers are also being offered an anthrax vaccine. now, the cdc is investigating this safety breach and says the scientists responsible could face disciplinary action. amy. >> all right, thank you. let's bring in chief health and medical editor dr. richard besser who is also the former acting director of the cdc. you began your career there. you know the ins and outs. how did this happen? >> yeah, so this took place in the front line lab at cdc for detecting a bioterrorism event and get powder samples from around the country trying to cole up with a new method of killing the samples without wearing protective gear. unfortunately, the new method for killing the anthrax didn't work and people received samples that had live anthrax in them. >> so for these 75 staffers what are the short and long-term effects here? what are the concerns and what will the treatments. >> they'll be looking for signs

of anthrax which initially could just look like the flu, ache, fever, headache, that kind of thing. but, you know, i expect they'll take these antibiotics because if you wait until you develop symptoms, as many as 40% of people are going to die from that infection. serious. >> any health concerns for the public at large especially people near the cdc. >> thankfully, no. it doesn't spread person to person. you can occasionally get the skin form from contaminated clothing but all the outer clothing was left in the lab. >> an investigation is under way to make sure it doesn't happen again. >> exactly. i think they'll bring in outside people to take a look, as well. >> dr. richard besser, thanks. we turn to the crisis in iraq and president obama's decision to send up to 300 military advisers to help the iraqi army battle islamic militants. targeted air strikes listen 0 the table but the president wants to see major changes from the government in baghdad first. abc's martha raddatz is tracking all the latest from there. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, george. let's talk about those additional 300 u.s. troops.

they will be green berets, they will be not only in baghdad, but in the volatile north of this country. they will advise and train iraqi security forces. the president says they will not see combat but this is still a dangerous mission and about the air strikes i think the only way you will see air strikes is if americans are threatened if the embassy is threatened, if baghdad is threatened, george. >> meantime, martha, you've got a very dangerous standoff going on at that oil refinery. so important to the whole country. >> reporter: indeed, george, in fact, i was at that very oil refinery in 2009 walking around with general ray odierno. right now in baiji you have iraqi security forces, about 275 of them, surrounded, completely surrounded by isis militants. they aren't attacking the refinery right now. what they are doing is starving

out those iraqi security forces, they are virtually holding them hostage but the iraqis do believe this oil refinery has fallen. that is what they have told american officials, but not what they're telling the public. >> okay, martha, thanks. we'll have full coverage of the crisis on sunday on "this week." now the rest of the top stories from ryan smith. we begin with terrifying moments for thousands of people leaving an outdoor concert near denver. gunfire erupted at a parking lot in the red rock amphitheater where school boy q was among the mor performers. the gunman still remains on the loose. no official word on the victims' conditions. also in colorado a massive explosion leveling this home north of denver. it was heard for miles and sent debris flying more than a block away. one man is presumed dead. no word yet on what caused the explosion. the v.a. hospital scandal is worse than we first thought. one in ten veterans, more than 341,000 people, have been forced

to wait more than a month to see a doctor. that's twice as many as previously reported. president obama is calling on mexico's president to stop the flood of child immigrants crossing the u.s. bodhgayaer. in a phone call thursday the president welcomed mexico's help in targeting criminals who lure children from central america. white house critics blame u.s. immigration policies for the crisis and today vice president biden visits guatemala to make it clear the children will not be immune from deportation. a former pizza deliveryman has been convicted of murdering four more women in los angeles. chester turner was already on death row for killing ten women when dna linked him to the additional crimes. most were strangled in the late '80s and '90s. a yacht burst into flames at this marina in southern california. the heavy smoke forcing about 100 workers to evacuate. thankfully, no one was seriously hurt. and look at this video.

100 convenience store owners and clerks in the state. investigators becoming suspicious after learning that out of the top ten lotto winners in the tampa area nine are convenience store owners. and this man, a different store clerk. >> you've won 38 times for about $50,000. >> in four years maybe. >> reporter: how much money have you put into it, do you think. >> maybe 60 or 70. >> reporter: many alleged schemes. this clerk in syracuse was convicted last year of swindling a customer after telling him he had a $5,000 ticket when it was really worth 5 million. >> well, we got our one winner. >> richard lustig is the author of how to win the lotto. >> they tell the person, no it's not the winner and the person walks out of the store and in reality they have a thousand dollar winner. >> reporter: so the clerk pockets it. >> cashes it in. >> reporter: following investigations by abc news and our tampa affiliate, the florida lottery rolled out a series of

a-list celebrities from leonardo dicaprio and the poker princess organized a lot of the games spilling her secrets and what they're really like at the table. then team usa star jozy altidore joining us exclusively ahead of sunday's big game against portugal. but we begin with new details in the murder of an aspen socialite. two of the suspects in court today after charges dropped against a third person and we're learning more about the evidence in the case. abc's neal karlinsky has that story. >> reporter: this morning, newly released documents paint a more complete picture in the mysterious case of 57-year-old nancy pfister, the well-known aspen philanthropist found dead in february inside her mountain chalet allegedly murdered by her former tenant william styler, his wife, also named nancy cleared on similar charges tuesday. the prosecutor telling the aspen daily news that the case against styler is getting stronger.

according to court documents, blood stains were found in nine places on his 2002 jaguar including the trunk. one motion revealing officers found a trash bag containing the murder weapon in close proximity to the couple's hotel. the documents previously sealed released after a heated courtroom battle over leaked evidence. the defense accusing prosecutors and sheriffs of potentially tainting the jury pool by revealing that after pfister was fatally beaten her body was rolled up in a carpet and stuffed into a closet. pfister's daughter can't make sense of it. >> i just want to tape a picture of her face on the door and make them look at it. >> reporter: just days after the stylers' arrest in march investigators arrested this woman, katherine carpenter accusing her of being a co-conspirator in the murder. she had arranged for the stylers to rent pfister's home until pfister complained on her facebook page that her tenants weren't taking care of the home

and weren't paying rent. >> how could someone just be so angry that they got kicked out of a house or -- there's got to be something more so it's hard to understand that. >> reporter: this morning, as carpenter and styler head back to court many are wondering where the case is headed. for "good morning america," neal karlinsky, abc news, seattle. >> a lot of questions still on that case. >> there sure are. we turn to the search for that missing california firefighter who left his campsite a week ago chasing after his dog but never came back. they're using drones to look for him and may have discovered an important clue. david wright has the story. >> reporter: it's one week to the day since mike herdman vanished in this vast wilderness area. now rescuers are turning to a high-tech tool to help the search. drones armed with infrared camera, the hand launched puma -- >> they're a force multiplier. instead of 30 guys in the field
