>> nice enough to fly over and wake up early to be with us. so we'll talk to peanut later on this morning. we do want to begin with flood fears across the midwest. water raging over the banks and rivers. neal karlinsky is in one of the hardest hit areas. c carver, minnesota. good morning, neal. >> reporter: good morning. we're up on a berm that they have constructed to keep the flood waters at bay. the bridge is closed. the water is up. you can't see the gap that runs under it. without more rain, they have their hands full. severe thunderstorms blew through chicago overnight. drenching people downtown. bringing trees down on homes and wiping out power lines. even causing hundreds of delays at the airport. >> we sat on the tarmac for two hours. they brought us back to the gate. took us off. sat there another hour. then they said the flight's canceled. >> reporter: to the south in atlanta, another system. toppling trees, damaging homes. knocking down walls. in hard-hit minnesota, they

don't need anymore rain to keep the problems from stacking up. it only takes one look at this buckling bridge near henderson, minnesota, to get a sense of the power of a flooded river. the bridge is slowly collapsing. >> it's just a mess right now. >> reporter: is this bridge going to go? >> this bridge is gone. >> reporter: we tried to reach the hard-hit town of henderson but couldn't get past the mudslides. to the north, the national guard is working the flood line. helping to fill sandbags against still rising waters. they can't be everywhere. and volunteers are pitching in. >> some kids just showed up. yea! >> reporter: as waters continue to rise, much of the damage is in rural areas, hitting farmers the hardest. the water's been backed up here. not far from here, it's raging. a 14-year-old boy had to be pulled when he tried to cross the river and ended up dangling from a branch until he could be rescued. dangerous waters out here, dan. >> harrowing story, neal, thank

you. let's get the forecast now from meteorologist julie durda who is with us this weekend from miami, wplg. not looking good for today. >> no, not at all. we have heard from the national weather service, they're issued flood watches for parts of the midwest, especially where we'll see most of the rain, over parts of minneapolis, in towards minnesota. this is the overnight radar. the last 24 hours. the worst of the weather over omaha, nebraska. moving into iowa. this whole section is under the threat of big flooding concerns. yet again. we have the flash flood watch in effect. most likely will be upgraded to a flash flood warning. later on today. they could receive an additional three inches plus rainfall as we go into the afternoon and tomorrow. not only the rain. the violent storms just south of that area. tornadoes, wind gusts, and hail. >> not the news americans want to be hearing. julie, thank you. we turn to the rather shocking move out of the vatican. pope francis taking a shot at the mob while on a trip through

the heart of italy's mafia territory. he announced all organized crime members are kicked out of the catholic church. abc's jeffrey kofman has the story. >> reporter: from the pope, a direct hit. on a day-long visit to calabria, francis took aim at the heart of italy's mob, with an unscripted denunciation of organized crime. calling it the adoration of evil. those who this their lives have taken this ooel road, such as the mobsters, he says, are not in communion with god. they are excommunicated. the crowd of 150,000 cheered when they heard his words. never has a pope spoken so bluntly about the mob before. it is a body blow for mafia bosses in the region who like to present themselves as upstanding catholics. >> it's a remarkable thing for the pope to travel into their own territory to make this statement that they are not doing the work of god and far from it. declaring that they're excommunicated.

>> do you renounce satan? >> reporter: the hypocrisy of the mafia's devout catholicism was captured in "the godfather." the violent 1972 film. this is the first time a pope has threatened to excommunicate the mafia. [ speaking foreign language ] >> reporter: in 1983, pope john paul used milder language against the mafia, warning they would one day face the justice of god. they responded by bombing several churches in rome. francis' anger can be tracked to a hit in january that killed a 3-year-old boy and his grandfather. he told the mafia bosses hell awaits you if you continue on this road. for "good morning america," jeffrey kofman, abc news, london. >> thank you, jeffrey. ominous new developments out of iraq. four more strategic towns have fallen to the sunni fundamentalist group isis. they're marching toward baghdad.

meanwhile, thousands of heavily armed shiite militia men and wo women took to the streets to show they're ready to take on the insurgents. president obama announcing we're sending 300 soldiers to iraq as advisers. let's bring in jon karl. he's hosting "this week." later this morning, right here on "gma." right here on abc, rather. the latest reports out of the northern territory are horrifying. stories of crucifixions in one town. at this point, how hard does the administration believe it will be to dislodge these insurgents? >> they think in terms of the united states going in and dislodging it would be impossible. the view from the administration is, there is no military solution to this. the problem is, as bad as the insurgents are, they have a degree of support in the areas because the government is seen as being so defiantly, thoroughly anti-sunni. the real problem if iraq is a

buddy, fifty cent. when he tried his hands at a mets game. completely missing the plate. >> a trick throw. >> what did he say? it slipped? >> yeah. >> it slipped. >> so go with the underhand toss. >> or give rosemary a call. >> get some tips from rosemary. >> thanks, ron. this morning, the search intensifying for an off-duty firefighter missing in the california wilderness. mike herdman hasn't been seen since friday, june 13th when he went for a hike. rescuers catching sight of his dog but not finding him. now close encounters with rattle snakes for the rescuers. linzie janis has the latest. >> reporter: a fire chief part of the rescue crew was bitten by a rattlesnake on friday and was in intensive care. the search area is so remote, it would take two days to hike there. rescuers are being air-lifted in. the ground they're covering, a thick forest with deep ycanyos

and lots of animal activity, including bears and mountain lions. this morning, an around-the-clock search for a missing offduty firefighter enters its seventh day. overnight, the number of injured rescuers rising to five, including one bit by a rattlesnake. the hospital saying 52 vials of anti-venom used to treat him. that is a record number. >> this is some of the toughest terrain we have in the state. >> reporter: new video shows the thick and rocky los padres national forest. rescue teams are searching this area for mike and his dog, duke. >> it's hard. just to -- we are keeping hope every day. we expect mike to be found. or -- come up somewhere. so it's been tough. >> reporter: herdman was on a

camping trip when duke ran off. the 36-year-old went after him and never returned. leaving behind his backpack, even his shoes. authorities have seen duke several times. but have been unable to corral him. >> i hope that duke's with mike. so, if we find duke, i hope we find mike. >> reporter: friends and family are hoping herdman's skills as a firefighter, outdoorsman and paramedic help his chance of survival. >> people who are accomplished outdoorsmen. they can stay self-sustained for days. without food rations if they don't have any. we have hope that that's the case. and that there's not a critical injury. >> reporter: he wasn't camping on his own. he was with a friend. the two became separated. when herdman's dog ran off. there is concern and suspicion that he may be seriously injured and unable to move. his family and fellow firefighters say they have no intentions of giving up the search, no matter how dangerous. they're going to find their brother and bring him home. >> and the dog. and he's got some good friends.

thank you. now to an incredible rescue. this one at sea. a couple fell off their boat near key largo, florida. they were spotted 14 hours later, many miles away. trying to swim ashore. this rescue involves a trio of heroes. marci gonzalez is on the story. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. when they fell overboard, they were not wearing their life vests. they spent an entire night trying to keep their heads above the waves and looking for sharks. the guys that found them turned out to be experts at handling emergencies. stranded at sea. no boat, no life jackets. no way to call for help. >> they were some lucky couples. >> reporter: shawn and melissa were off the coast and they somehow went overboard. their 30-foot island hopper still in gear, driving away there them. all they could do was tread water and wait. >> my first thought was, how in the world did you get out here. >> reporter: the current carrying them nearly 75 miles

mort to hallandale beach. after 14 hours in the atlantic ocean, finally a few guys out deep sea fishing spotted the couple. >> it's hard enough to find fish. but two people floating on the water, it's pretty strange. >> reporter: a strange sight even for these guys who thought they had seen it all. the two broward county sheriff's detectives and a paramedic enjoying the day off, suddenly going into life saving mode. >> the closer we got, we realized this is a true emergency. kicked into gear. got there. and actually performed a rescue. >> reporter: the couple suffering from jellyfish stings and minor hypothermia, otherwise okay. now back at home with an incredible story of survival and luck. >> it was purely chance. >> that's just one of them miracle stories. you know, thank god we found them. >> reporter: the rescuers say the couple was running out of time. much longer, they may have ended up in the gulf stream that could have carried them farther from

neighbor, john upton, a well-known hollywood film maker. they had an ongoing feud that allegedly started over shrubbery. >> stop cutting trees! >> reporter: vilkin claimed self-defense after he fatally shot upton in march 2013. they had an argument regarding trees and bushes adjacent to upton's property. that argument escalated quickly. >> he told me, this is not your land. get the [ bleep ] out of here. i saw a pistol in his right hand. it was like one second. and i pulled out my revolver and shot him. >> reporter: prosecutors say they only recovered one weapon on the scene. that was vilkin's .44-caliber revolver. a major factor in aiding the jury's decision to convict the retired economist. >> if you hide behind self-defense after having a fight with somebody over cutting

shrubs, i don't think the jury is going to like you. >> reporter: as for upton's family, they're now able to close the chapter for the man they loved. >> i feel relief. it's not happy day. it's just that the truth came out. >> reporter: now, vilkin's attorneys tried to make the case he had been bullied for months by the victim. apparently, the jury didn't buy it. it all start eed over somethingo petty. >> so unnecessary. at least some closure for the family. a news update from ron on this busy morning. rising waters leading to new flooding fears all across the midwest. parts of the midwest. severe thunderstorms in chicago overnight, knocking trees on to homes and downing power lines. in minnesota, the national guard called in to help sand-bag to try to protect against those rising waters. and in iraq, four more towns have fall on the the
