>> sunday night and the big story on "action news" is developing in ocean city, new jersey, where a search ended for the night in the waters there for a 14-year-old boy from philadelphia missing since about 7:00 this evening. we're now learning the tragedy could have been much worse. authorities tell "action news" the boy was on a jetty with friends when he fell into the water and good samaritans went into help and were swept up by rip cur ernts. they rescued 14 good samaritans and have not found the 14-year-old. >> they had all kinds of lifeguards out in the water.

and boats. and jet skis and then finally the coastguard came. >> i just cannot imagine. >> the incident occurred after lifeguards were gone fort day. several agencies worked together to look for this missing young man and the search will resume tomorrow morning. now to other big story on "action news" tonight the investigation into how a metal security gate fell outside of a rita's water ice star killing a little girl. >> now as we first told you yesterday, last night, actually, 3-year-old wynter larkinwas crushed when the piece of metal fell on top of her, 1 ton. >> vernon odom has the story. verne. >> reporter: good evening, sarah, city officials are expected to have more. much more to say about this tragedy in the 2800 block of girard avenue. and they're calling this a mind-blowing incident and calling for prayers to a grieving family.

>> this child, 3-year-old wynter larkinis a poster child for senseless tragedy. she was killed yesterday at a rita's ice in brewery town. wyn te r and her mother were at an event for charity. it happened around 4:30 in the afternoon. dozens of witnesses were there. police and frat men lifted the gate up and cpr was administered and failed. >> it was horrific and senseless. and i'm very sad. >> police crime screen experts spent the day gathering evidence including plywood slats from inside the wall where supposedly the gate was properly bolted. sources tell "action news" the bolts that support that gate should have been between 6 to 8" long and the ones found at the scene sources tell us were 2.25" in length. this local merchant down the street observed problems with that security gate a couple years ago. >> they had a problem with it
