i'm reena ninan. >> and i'm bradley. a frightening flight on a united jet. an emergency evacuation slide opening in the back of the plane. >> passengers posted images of the slide blocking the aisle. the pilot landed it in wichita, kansas, where emergency crews were waiting. >> we heard a little bit of a pop, and we saw the stewardests running to the back of the plane. we saw the emergency slides had deployed. we landed, and some people in hazmat suits, it looked like, came in. >> basically everyone was looking around. you were wondering if the plane was okay, be able to land, what was going to happen. >> john nans calls this unusual and very rare. it's not the first time it happened, one was on a jetblue

flight in november, pinning a flight attendant. >> the orange county-bound passengers are staying in wichita overnight. and a weekend of punishing weather left states water-logged and asking for help. >> this was eastern arkansas to memphis, torrential rain, as much as a foot overnight saturday. forcing people out of their homes. farmers are hoping they can save that are crops. this is iowa, several feet of water. 6 inches of rain in an hour and a half in cedar rapids. the cedar rapids river rose 2 feet in a couple hours. in wisconsin, fierce winds tore apart this industrial building next to an airport. large pieces of insulation caught in the fences. >> a new big worry this week.

the southern border is only expected to get worse. president obama calls it an urgent humanitarian situation. the new flood of unaccompanied children from central america, arriving by the hundreds every day at the southern border. fleeing poverty and violence. thousands sleeping in makeshift conditions on the overcrowded floors of detention centers. later today, the president is expected to ask congress for $2 billion and new powers to address the crisis. up until now, dealing with a legal obligation, a law passed in the george w. bush presidency. >> there's a system in which we're supposed to process them, take care of them, until we can send them back. >> reporter: now the administration has signalled they want to change that law. they want to speed the

deportati deportation, and hire more immigration judges, and build facilities to process and house the children. border patrol caught more than 52,000 kids entering the u.s. illegally since october. a number that overwhelmed the federal government and is expected to grow. >> the fact is these are children. children and families. we have a moral responsibility to address this in a dig -- dig any fied way. >> reporter: and they want to temporarily house mother who is bring their children over illegally. >> thank you. also today, the president pushing ahead with the plan to clean up the v.a. selecting former proctor gamble executive robert mcdonald to head the veterans affairs. he graduated at the top of his class at west point and served as a captain.

he would replace eric shinseki who resigned over the v.a. health care crisis. a major decision on birth control from the supreme court today. hobby lobby sued the government, saying the requirement violated their rights. the judges were divided back in march. supporters will be waiting for that decision outside the supreme court. more charges expected to be charged against the alleged mastermind of the benghazi attack. he made a brief appearance in washington over the weekend. prosecutors have yet to reveal details. a two-page indictment unsealed saturday offered no new details. he will be back in court on tuesday. and iraq is striking back with the help of the u.s. deployi ining helicopters in an

attempt to take back ty krit. and the u.s. has sent 75 hellfire missiles. the insurgents remain in control of the city. breaking news from south africa, as the murder trial of olympic sprinter oscar pistorius resumed. it's been recessed for six weeks while he underwent psychiatric tests. those tests show he did not suffer from mental illness at the time he shot and killed his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. it could affect the length of the sentence if convicted. and the wildfire in eastern arizona, got a break from the windy weather, and now 5% contained. although evacuation orders remain in place for three dozen summer homes, they are not in imminent danger. monsoon season will bring

. tourists on a beach in sydney, australia, were enjoying the water when joined by a 40-foot long southern right whale. may have been a female looking for a quiet place to calf. she rested for a few hours and then back to sea. here at home, heavy rain could make for a tough commute in the center of the country and around the great lakes. wet from florida up through the appalachians as well. and flying, airport delays in kansas city, chicago, atlanta, charlotte and miami. an ominous sight off cape cod, a huge great white shark a quarter of a mile from the shoreline. >> the first sighting this year. and a group said it was a female, up to 15-feet long. the beach didn't close, but some
