>> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. edwards, karen rogers and >> hello and good morning. it's 5 o'clock on this wednesday, july 2nd. tam is off. nydia han joins us and here's what's happening. >> today will be hotter and even more humid than yesterday and accuweather is tracking the chance for gusty thunderstorms. >> "action news" has video of a food truck exploding into a fire ball in a philadelphia street. nearly a dozen people were hurt. >> look at this. volunteers are hard at work right now building a giant version of one of philadelphia's favorite sandwiches. yes, the wawa hoagie. a live picture there. >> our mouths are watering, david and karen, or maybe it's just the humidity. >> yeah, really, we could use some water with those hoagies today definitely and some ice. we've got a heat advisory in effect starting at noon today. it doesn't quit until 8 o'clock tonight. and during that time period especially in urban centers across the central counties it

will feel like it's between 100 and 105 degrees. this is definitely a day for all those heat tips we always tell you about in the summer. cool drinks, take it easy, loose light colored clothing, that's a a good way to go. 76 degrees currently in philadelphia. 74 in allentown. 76 in wilmington. 74 in trenton and 73 in sea isle city so already we're very warm out there and as we roll through the day we're looking at high heat and high humidity. 83 degrees by 9 o'clock, 90 by noon. by 3 o'clock, 94 degrees. your high today is going to be 95. we'll probably hit that around 3:30 or 4:00 and then 92 by 6 o'clock. also notice how during the afternoon and evening there is the chance of some thunderstorms popping up and some of these could actually be strong. we are at a slight risk of severe weather across the region with anything that does pop later this afternoon. i think the afternoon thunderstorm chances best in the northern and westerns suburbs and then in the evening it shifts to i-95. don't know that anything ever makes it down to the shore but downpours lightning and gusty winds all part of the package there. for now satellite showing you there's not a whole lot going

on out there but as we get a little later into the hotter portion of the day and that front out to the west gets closer that's your issue. and then tropical storm arthur still spinning off the coast of florida but starting to make that move north. how close does it make it to us? we'll have details coming up in the accuweather seven day. karen what about roads? >> they're dry. we've got light volume. we're looking lie on 95 at girard. that's your southbound traffic here headed towards center city. you can see the overnight construction is clear and no delays coming in from bucks county, northeast philadelphia. looking pretty good right here and on the big picture your speeds reflecting that on i-95, mostly in the 50's. in olde city don't forget the fifth street tunnel under the ben franklin bridge closed until 2 o'clock this afternoon while they work on that. in montgomery county here the northeast extension northbound just past the mid county tolls watch for this, they're pacing traffic because of the road repairs here so expect some slowing in the area at times and in west amount ton township burlington ton county construction, ramps from 295 to mount holly-willingboro

exit 45 closed due to construction. you've got to use the ramp at creek road or 541 this will be out here about another hour matt. >> thanks karen. new this morning here, the action cam was a the an apartment complex in delaware where two men were should there. it happened at the village of windover complex. 22 victims were taken to the hospital with wounds on their upper body. no word on their conditions. police are looking for at least three men who ran from the scene. two people remain in critical condition this morning after a blast ripped through a philadelphia food truck. erin o'hearn has video of the incident and new details. >> reporter: this video was captured by a security camera and is both incredible and horrifying. take a look at this. now watch that ball of fire just goes up there and cars around that area were charred. 11 people were injured. and a utility pole was set on

fire. now, the two women who were inside the truck were the most seriously injured. they suffered burns across substantial parts of their bodies. the woman who was running the truck is one of the two people who remain in critical condition in the hospital. her cousin says she had just recently opened the food truck for business. >> her dream was to open a truck and she opened it and she was doing actually a very good job and it's crazy how this happened. >> the the lady was on the floor. at that time she was just laying there on her back with her hands in the air like, you know, just stuck and as i looked over, there was another lady on the fence and i tried to help her but the heat from the other cars that was there was just so much for us to even try to help her. >> reporter: frightening situation. the official cause of this explosion is still under investigation but it appears it was caused by one of the two propane tanks that were on the back of the truck. investigators say they are working to rule out any criminal activity, though and hopefully confirm that this

was indeed an accident. nydia, back to you. >> erin, thank you. new this morning, a new 6abc franklin and will and marshall poll on the pennsylvania race for governor. it shows democratic candidate tom wolf with a big lead over governor tom corbett. wolf holds a 22-point lead over corbett, 47 percent of voters polled favored wolf while while only 25 percent said they would vote for corbett. 27 percent of those polled don't know who they're going to vote for. >> the fundamental problem that governor corbett has is that based on his three and a half years in office, there are too many voters who simply will not support his reelection at this point. >> the director of the poll says only about one in four voters think governor corbett is doing an excellent or a good job. the poll surveyed 502 pennsylvania voters from june 23rd through the 29th. the wawa welcome america celebration is in full swing and what would the party be without hoagies? news" reporter katherine scott is live inside the national constitution center on independence mall. hi, katherine. >> reporter: hi, nydia, yeah, in the last half hour you saw a little demonstration of the hoagie build now the full scale is under way. they just had the kickoff and you can see wally the goose has arrived, the wawa mascot. he's been blowing kisses to the camera now. what a ham he is but he was doing some dance moves before and you can see the energy is high here in the national constitution center. also milling around the room is a george washington reenactor no doubt wondering what is going on. around 150 employees from a number of different wawas are here and build is on. they're making 17,000 italian short tea hoagies, 10,000 pounds of ingredients were carted in, piles of cold cuts lettuce tomato the rest of the fixings all for wawa hoagie day t the first 5,000 going hoagies will be given to philadbundance and distribute

definitely feel it and you want to take it slow today, dress comfortably, loose, light fitting light colored clothing is a good idea and plan on keeping fluids going today, okay. 76 degrees in philadelphia right now, 74 trenton, 76 in wilmington, 74 allentown, 73 in sea isle city t it feels a little bit humid here in the studio, just a little bit. sometimes that happens. oppressive humidity. dewpoints over 70 for a good portion of the day. it will feel very muggy. the other part of the story today is thunderstorms. these are going to form out in central pennsylvania sometime early this afternoon and then by two, 3 o'clock we'll start to see them pushing into our northern and western suburbs. they're going to be spotty but where they hit they could produce drenching downpours, gusty winds and lots of lightning. by 5 o'clock, 5:30 we may still see most of this in the northern and western suburbs but eventually this evening some have the chance of pushing any other i-95 corridor and then eventually getting close to the coast although i think the shore itself you'll probably see this fall apart before it gets there. anywhere across the region if

you hi thunder this afternoon or this evening you take cover indoors in case you get a gusty strong one. 92 is the high in allentown, humid, a storm can't be ruled out today. at the shore probably dry but humid. storms maybe, maybe not. there might be a shower popping through later tonight but during the day i think it's just sun and clouds. we're going to be warm with an afternoon high of about 86 and it will feel humid down by the coast. in philadelphia, hot and humid, oppressively so today. a high of 95 with that chance of afternoon thunderstorms and especially toward the evening and i-95. there you see how the temperatures are going to soar. by 2 o'clock we'll be up to 93, probably hitting 90 by noon so the whole afternoon really looks pretty miserable. 94 by 5 o'clock dipping down from that high of 95. then will be around 4 o'clock. down to the tropics, you can see that counterclockwise swirl, the center of low pressure that is tropical storm arthur. this is on the move off to the north. most of our spaghetti plot models are consistent pulling the storm off the shore so the

main threat for us is going to be rip currents on friday and probably saturday as well, maybe a little friday morning rain but looks like we're okay for fireworks and afternoon barbecues. your seven-day, 95 degrees today, hot, oppressively humid and some spotty but drenching strong thunderstorms possible later in the day and this evening. then on thursday 88, still warm and humid and there could still be some drenching thunderstorms but probably not as strong and gusty on thursday. friday arthur is off shore, maybe a little morning rain. after that we might see the reemergence of some sun during the day but the big story is it will be dry for your afternoon and evening activities t82 is the high. weekend ice in the upper 80's as we roll through the weekend and monday and tuesday back into more soupy weather and unsettled weather with thunderstorms reemerging in the forecast. >> thank you david. 5:10. more news you didn't see last thick smoke and fierce flames threatening homes in california's wine country. >> a close call for one police

they'll be sizzling today. 77 degrees getting up into the 90's. feeling more like a hundred. >> time to take a look at the roads with karen rogers. hey, karen. >> hey, head out early if you want to avoid it, that's all we can say but it's already kind of sticky out there. time for your suburban traffic report. let's go lie in exton chester county. this is route 100 at sunrise boulevard. no overnight construction here so looking pretty good and no problems between the 30 bypass and the pennsylvania turnpike so good to go this morning in exton. but on the maps here we've got construction old lancaster road is going to close in tredyffrin township between conestoga road and lancaster avenue, route 30, today and tomorrow from nine until 2 o'clock so while they work on that stick to lancaster avenue route 30 for your alternate. new jersey, folsom atlantic county route 322 both ways west of 54 construction blocks the left lane until 6 o'clock in the morning tomorrow so you'll be dealing with that in atlantic county through the day today into the overnight

into tomorrow so watch for that one. time for your commuter traffic report which you can be part of when you download the free waze app. we're staying in new jersey. this is mount laurel route 70 showing no problem if you're taking that headed over the ben franklin bridge. you're not going to have an issue. 295 and the new jersey turnpike running smoothly right now if you're headed up north you're looking pretty good out there let's check the weather right now for you and check on any weather related problems and any other seeing them other than the warmth and the humidity. 76 degrees already right now in philadelphia and dewpoints today are going to be over 70 making it feel oppressively humid out there, matt and nydia. >> karen, thank you. a police officer in maryland is under investigation for possibly pushing a driver to the ground. the officer was directing traffic around an accident scene yesterday when a driver veers off course and brushes the officer with his car. the officer slams his hands on the car and banks on the window. when the driver finally gets out of the vehicle, it appears the officer pushes him. the driver faces dui charges.

from our delaware news room forensic experts are hoping modern technology will help them solve a mysterious death. these photos are a re-creation of a man's face, his body was found in november 2012. the man also had distinct tattoos on his back. authorities located him in a wooded area near west rusting lane and carol drive in dover. investigators don't know how he died. if you have any information, call dover detectives. >> the phillies will try to end their five game losing streak tonight. cole hamels takes the mound against the marlins in miami. the phillies had a dismal start to their 10 game road trip last night. marlins hitter ed lucas hit a base hit in the bottom of the 11th inning help to beat the phillies five to four. the phillies are now a season high nine and a half games out of first place. the u.s. soccer team's exciting run at the world cup in brazil is over. belgium scored two quick goals in extra time to beat the u.s. team two to one yesterday. that knocked the americans out of the competition. u.s. goalie tim howard was the

morning. a delta two rocket carrying the satellite had been scheduled to lift off yesterday from the air force base in california but it was stopped at 46 seconds because a water flow system failed. this morning's launch planned for 5:56. the mission is to study carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. >> hey, we have uncomplicated traffic for you. that's way we like it. let's take you outside right now. this is west conshohocken matsonford road at route 23 and route 23 is open unlike yesterday. go ahead and take conshohocken state road. no problems there. let's head into new jersey and that's 42 northbound traffic at creek road, the overnight construction is clear and we've got no delay northbound dave. >> we're in the mid 70's right now karen but on the big board look at how fast we get to the 80's. by 9 o'clock at 83, by noon, 90 dan then 94 by 3 o'clock. your high this afternoon is going to be 95 degrees at about 4 o'clock and the heat index will make it feel like it's probably in the 100 to

105 range in urban center. also the chance of thunderstorms popping up in the northern and western suburbs and then moving into the i-95 corridor this evening and some of those could be strong and gusty. if you're headed to the airport, let's see if we have anything other than green planes on the board -- yes, all greens and not getting any indication of any precipitation in any of our most traveled destinations so hopeful no issues at least this morning heading out of town. nydia. >> thank you, david. more women are getting the latest technology in breast cancer screening. but a new study suggests the new technology may not be making a difference. researchers looked at the numbers and could not find any evidence that cancers were being detected earlier than when women were getting the standard mammogram. the new tests are also more expensive which means patients could be paying for pricey scans that don't really provide added benefits. a small but promising government study found that bone marrow transplants can reverse severe sickle cell disease in adults. it worked in 26 of 30 adults studied. the technique is a modified

version of what doctors have done in children. doctors have avoided doing the transplants in adults because of concerns the disease had taken a toll on their bodies. >> a cell carrier fighting back on charges that it allowed its customers to be gouged by texting scams. abc's tahman bradley has america's money. >> reporter: good morning. topping america's money, t mobile hit with a federal lawsuit accused of cleating customers out of hundreds of millions of dollars. t mobile allegedly allowed third period companies to charge account holders without authorization. graco expanding its car seat recall adding 2 million car seats fodder recall because buckles could become gummed up by food and drinks. the company previously recalled more than 3 million toddler seats for the same problem. salt levels still high at major chains. at kfc researchers found sodium levels up 12 percent, red lobsters chilly's and olive garden they're serving meals with 5,000 milligrams, three days worth. subway is a stand outcutting

the non-habit forming sleep aid >> firefighters are battling a raging wildfire in napa county in northern california. the flames have burned more than 2700 acres, damaging five structures and prompting mandatory evacuations for more than 200 homes. dry windy conditions are helping fuel the blaze. no injuries have been reported. there are reports a weed whacker may have started fire. >> one thing to get are hand stuck in a cookie jar, how about your entire head? it happened to a black bear cub, it's a great picture really and we can say that because the bare cub was not really harmed. it found a cookie jar somewhere, started trying to get to some of those cookies and the jar just went right over his head. the state environmental protection department took

the action cam is live as sandwich builders embark on a wawa tradition, constructing the 5-ton hoagie. good morning everyone, 5:30 on this wednesday, tam is off, nydia han joins us. we're all hungry. let's go to david and karen. >> i got sweet peppers on the brain now. we got issues today. the first is a heat advisory in effect from noon today until 8 o'clock this evening where heat indexes because of the combined high heat and high humidity could make it feel like between 100 and 105 and especially in urban centers in all these highlighted counties so cool drinks today, take it easy don't overdo it. 76 already in philadelphia and already feeling muggy out there. 76 in wilmington, 74 in allentown. 73 in sea isle city. as we go through the day, well, here's the numbers story. 83 degrees by 9 o'clock. and 90 by noon. pretty quick rise to 90 today and 94 by 3 o'clock with that high of 95 probably right in there around 4 o'clock, all right. other issue is the possibility of some thunderstorms and as you look out to the west
