a gas station clerk stops an amber alert, hour a woman's instincts saves a baby girl. but the big story on "action news" is the chance of more downpours as we head into a long holiday weekend. >> right now a flash flood watch is in affect for much of area. as we look live here at the scene from cape may from sky 6 hd, today accuweather is tracking more heavy rain heading our way in the aftermath of strong storms last night. and we are keeping an eye on hurricane arthur this noon, this is the picture from the international space station as it churns off the coast of north carolina. there is a mandatory evacuation order for people in the outer banks. and people are told to leave to avoid getting stuck on the islands. >> while not making a direct hit on the jersey shore, it could bring dangerous rip currents to

the atlantic. lets go to david murphy for more. >> lets start with radar, stormtracker 6 live double scan we are seeing development of new cells be probably some thunderstorms starting to pop in chester county, this is where we saw this happening before dawn in our morning broadcast and i would suspect the storms as they pulled away is sparking the redevelop in the same spot. it's hot and humid out there, this isn't really the big problem though, you'll want to avoid this if you can and pull over if you get a brief heavy downpour. later this afternoon and tonight we'll see more of this action and more numerous thunderstorms coming in from the north and west. as a result there is a flash flood watch today, tonight and into tomorrow morning. it's in most of the areas across the region you see away from the shore. rainfall 1 to 3 inches total.

from last night and what we expect tonight and tomorrow morning could be enough to produce ponding and puddling and quick rising water on roadways. in terms of what is going on right now on radar, a little farther to the south and west, this is the area of concern, the cold front that triggered yesterday's problems still out to the west of us. we see reds and yellows in western pennsylvania, as the front pushes towards the east we are under an increased threat because of this activity. and then into the dinner hour, and perhaps the evening in philadelphia over by the shore you may have to wait longer. we are setting the table for trouble. 86 and warm across the region and your dew points, anything over 70 is oppressive humidity and we have that everywhere across the region than is the soup sitting there waiting for the front to come in and cause us problems. i want to show you arthur, the

latest information on the storm is it's fast growing and growing in intensity. the wind speeds are up to 90 and there is thought that it could be a category 2 by the time it passes hatteras and passes us. it appears that lightning is to blame for a fire that destroyed eight apartments in heights town, new jersey last night. eight families were forced to leave their homes and vest gatders believe it was caused a by lightning strike to the building and a fire in levitto n levittown, buckses county katherine scott has more. >> we heard a loud bang and soon neighbors heard a fire that this left behind, neighbors stopped

by to see what was left of these homes at these apartments in levittown, the roof charred and the second floor windows barred up. the red cross is assisting residents that can't return home. lightning lit up the sky as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. >> i looked down and saw this, oh, my gosh, it scares me to death, the flames were all the way up. >> storm clouds moved across the area and soon the skies opened up. in manayunk, rain teemed down on main street and on to unlucky people caught outside without an umbrella and lightning flashes over new jersey and the heavy downpours cause the flash flooding, you can see this gas station submerged in reading. and trying to determine if lightning was a cause in edge water park, the fire was

reported on the 200 block of farnham street. the investigation is underway in montgomery township. matthew heard the thunder and ran to his neighbor's home and flames were coming from the roof. firefighters were met with flames at raven hollow drive. and the damage was extonguive and the red cross is helping the families that lived there. >> most of the roof is gone and the second floor as extensive damage. >> residents have not been able to return home, but even in surrounding apartments where the residents are allowed in, they say the smell of smoke is so strong it's difficult to stay inside. well, despite the weather concerns for the 4th of july tomorrow, many travellers are

packing up and heading for the beaches, live in ventnor is amy buckman. >> we are leer on the ventnor boardwalk, people that had the day off are the lucky ones, as we look over at the beach, plenty of people have the umbrellas out and they are enjoying the sunshine we have got right now, the one thing they have got to be aware of is that the currents are swift with arthur churning in the south, lifeguards are aware of it and beach goers are aware of it but it's not stopping them from having a great time. leah knows that with arthur churning off the coast, she could have her work cut out for her keeping people safe and out of the rip tides. >> there is suppose to be a lot of rip tides, hopefully it keeps the bathers in.

they re well aware that the currents could be tricky this weekend. >> it will bring a little bit of a swell, the surf is good, and for the lifeguards to be busy, everybody has to be careful. >> most people say they will not let the weather interrupt their holiday weekend plans. we have our grandchildren coming in with our son and daughter-in-law and they are spending time with us and we are taking them out. and go see lucy, we'll have a great time. >> it's not great, a brand new season, what are you going to do. it happens. >> any day at the beach is a good day. >> that is true. >> you know what they say, a bad day at the beach is better than a good day anywhere else. even though the weather is not fabulous, folks on the beach are enjoying what they can today and they are keeping their fingers crossed to continue the celebration tomorrow. >> amy, thank you.

whatever your plans this holiday weekend, we keep tabs on the weather any time by downloading our free 6 abc storm tracker app, and we post when severe weather is coming to your area. drivers were running into delays this morning on the pennsylvania turnpike after a truck flipped over in buck county, the crash happened at 11:00 on the eastbound exit ramp, the tractor trailer was blocking one lane and no injuries were reported. the coast guard resumed their search today for a man that vanishes after his boat capsized in the delaware river, search and rescue teams flew over the river in search of the 66-year-old man, he was out on the sailboat when the severe weather hit, the boat overturned near the delaware river yacht club late last night. four people made it to shore safely and the missing man was last seen using a cooler as a floatation device.

meteorologist, david murphy is here now with a closer look at the forecast. some areas are revamping their fireworks plans tonight. lower providence is one of them. the township has told us that the fireworks canceled for tonight and so far it's not rescheduled. but we'll let you know more on that. stormtracker 6 live double scan we have dry conditions in most of the areas, but if you come in closer, there are showers that have formed in parts of chester county and they are creeping into montgomery county, and i suppose areas of bucks may see

some of this too. some of these are looking more robust, and hopefully this is all we get. but it's a sign of things to come and later on we'll get thunderstorms forming to the north and west and everybody is going to be in and around those i think as we go through the afternoon and evening, south of baltimore a thunderstorm pushing into the chesapeake bay, checking outside, sky 6, we are at the shore umbrellas are up against the sun and relief is there in the water. you get out of the water it's not so good. look at that red flag too, you have concerns there with possible currents and the possible surf, more of a concern tomorrow as arthur gets closer. the dew point is up to 70 and that moons pretty humid, winds southwest at 8 miles per hour, temperatures across the region, everybody is in the 80s, everybody in the 80s, 88 at the

atlantic city airport and 88 in wildwood. the heat index feels like the low 90s in philadelphia, wilmington, 92 in allentown and feels like 97 in reading. satellite 6 along with action radar showing up on tracker 6 from now until 2:00 or 3:00, we look out for more of these pop-up showers or thunderstorms, where they hit could produce drenching downpours, 5:00 or 6:00, the western suburbs are threatened by some of this and we are looking at a line of drenchers later on this evening. the big issue is the drenching downpour and lots of lightning, it looks like this starts to break apart by 11:00, 11:30, adam and cecily has something to show you at 4:00, but more at 10:00 and 11, 88 is your high and clouds and sun and humid.

65 in the water off a.c. and at the beach we'll stop at 84 and warm and humid and a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm, but probably not until later in the evening at the shore. as we look at today's call in philadelphia, looking at 90, clouds and sun and humid and thunderstorms are possible and 71 is the overnight low, we take a look at the tropics, hurricane arthur became a hurricane at 5:00 a.m., up to 90 miles per hour winds and it looks like this category one hurricane will be a 2 as it passes hatteras and there say rip current danger and rain around too, between 6:00 a.m. and noon, the possible that the storm is close enough to get us wet. but look at the afternoon, a nice improvement and the evening looks great for fireworks. tomorrow rain in the morning and sunshine returning later and a great night for fireworks and the weekend is looking great,
