what you can do to keep safe. with the rip currents and a task to fix the 495 bridge. what officials said for the first time about the closure of the busy span. >> hurricane arthur could crash the party for folks up and down the east coast. all eyes are on the forecast and backup plans are being made now. meteorologist, melissa magee, where rip currents are the big concern. adam joseph is at the big board with the latest. >> the storm is moving to the northeast from 13 to 15 miles per hour. you can see the eye in the center of that storm. it extends 115 miles on either side with winds sustained at 90

miles per hour. we are buoys off the coast of north carolina that brings in some information, winds right now out of the southeast at 43 miles per hour, gusting to 51 wtd warm ocean temperature of 82 degrees, that is helping to feed arthur. a will have shot from kill devil hills, north carolina, a pier here, a guy here sitting he has his feet up on the edge there and a couple of folks looking and the surf is snot all that rough but they are bracing for the storm to past north carolina. where hurricane warnings are in affect from duck to myrtle beach. we have tropical storm warnings to ocean city but it does not include the delaware beaches or the new jersey coastline. as of right now we continue to show the spaghetti plots, as it becomes a category 2, about 300 miles to our east during afternoon hours on the 4th of

july, it will not bring wind or much in the way of tropical storm force winds, the biggest concern is the large waves and the rip currents. we'll talk more about the weekend holiday forecast and the storms moving in to the western suburbs in the full accuweather foreca forecast. lets turn to melissa magee, in wildwood tonight with more on how to stay safe in the water with the rip currents. yes, pretty breezy, that is in anticipation of hurricane arthur coming up the east coast but staying off our shore line, the lifeguards got off duty at 5:30 this evening and the chief, i was just speaking to him, he was telling me if you could see the difference in the color of the sand, this is where we see high tide, if we were in a high tide situation, where the three guys

are in the water wading, that is actually a rip current, they are sitting in a rip current, you would not be aware that that is a rip current, it's all about safety, safety first into this holiday weekend. we have 40 lifeguards on patrol earlier today and they are station as long 20 point as long the beach here in wildwood. so far there have been three water-related rescues and as we continue to monitor hurricane arthur as it gets close but stays offshore, there is an increase for rip currents and the rescues are either water related or rip current related. i spoke to the chief earlier today. what to do in the event of getting stuck in a rip current, and he talked about some of the things you can do. >> turbulent sandy brown water is one indicator, a flow, an

outward flow of water, normally the waves are coming in, that is another indicator of a rip current. >> so one thing to keep in mind, earlier today there was red flags posted, that is something to keep in mind into the holiday weekend, any time are you along the water or the beaches or whatever your destination is, you see the red flags that is an indication at hom home to all of you swimmers there is rough surf going on and rip currents, and never swim where a lifeguard is not present. we'll continue to monitor the situation here and hopefully everybody will be safe this happy and fun holiday weekend. >> thank you melissa. we appreciate it. meantime people at the shore say they will not let the people

evacuations have started. people are planning to stay safe. here is more from nags head, north carolina. >> reporter: good evening, i can tell you the temperature is definitely cooling off and we are seeing the clouds and fog rolling in and right now we are live next to the nags head fishing pier, you can see behind me here, it's one mark we are following throughout the day, it's looking good and conditions are not too terrible. residents and tourists alike are watching and waiting to see what is next. as hurricane arthur makes its way down the east coast, people are packing up and leaving. >> my parents and my family are frustrated. they are stocking up on gas and lining up at the ferry after a mandatory evacuation is issued today. but a lot of people are planning to ride out the storm. melissa says she knows how to

stay safe. >> as long as we stay away from the waves we should be okay. >> arthur will strengthen to a category 2 hurricane, the governor is asking everyone to play it safe. >> be prepared with safety packages and lighting and flashlights. >> arthur skirted past florida but left behind danger for beach goers. >> it will create swells and disturbances in the water. >> the rip current risk will affect most of the east coast with red flags flying along 500 miles of shore line, in virginia they are keeping a close eye on the hurricane but staying positive. >> mid-day friday it's suppose to be here, that is all i know about it. >> mid-day five works are postponed here on the outer banks. live in nags head, north

carolina, channel 6 "action news." back to you. >> thank you kirk. be sure to tune in tomorrow for the latest on arthur, we'll have live reports again on the track. meantime the department of education is implemented new procedures after the closure of the 495 bridge. with more on that is sharrie williams, with the latest. del/dot got to the point before this thoroughfare was closed down and they were alerted several times there was a problem with the bridge. they announced there is protocol changes going forward, the bridge spans the christina river in wilmington and was shut down on june 2nd. the support columns were shifting and causing to tilt. a concerned driver called in a 911 call in april, a

geotechnical firm emailed del/dot saying something was wrong and an engineer called in late may. >> bottom line we should have acted sooner and we put policy changes in place to do that going forward. >> take a look at this unique point of view, this view here, the repairs being done on the bridge. del/dot posted this, it's a camera placed on a reinforcement bar to fix the bridge, the temporary repairs will cost $35 million and the federal government will pick up most of that tab. as for policy changes, del/dot has implemented a high priority condition, when calls come in maintenance crews and an engineer will physically go out and take a look in a timely manner and senior management has to sign off on it as well. they hope to open the southbound lanes by labor day and

northbound lanes a month after that. >> thank you. in the meantime, lets check the commute once more on this busy thursday night as folks get a head start on the holiday weekend. matt pellman is in the know. >> i don't know if you want to know what i know. it's a mess on 492, an issue with a truck accident by 295, we just watched as they opened the northbound lanes, the northbound delay is working itself out but still heavy. southbound is especially heavy off the walt whitman bridge and part traffic and part gaper delay. at creek row you flow better. on the admiral wilson boulevard, watch for police activity taking out one lane and schuylkill westbound a stop and go ride from the boulevard to the blue route, some of those travelers most likely headed to the poconos.

meteorologist adam joseph is working hard, it's a busy day. how people should prepare for this weekend coming up. especially tomorrow. tomorrow is a dicey day. rainy in the morning as we improve in the afternoon, glorious from start to finish. we have weather we are tracking, the line of thunderstorms as it approaches the western suburbs, now in affect for 6:45, for eastern lancaster and chester county, including coatesville and oxford and as far west as downtown lancaster. the culprit is vivid lightning,

now in smithville and coreyville heading west of 30 from chester coin and honey brook also be aware of this storm. as it heads towards paradise at 6:06, and also oakland coming in at 6:17, you should see the storm approaching the region. heat indexes are up very high, 98 is what it feels like right now, as well as millville and 98 in trenton, much cooler at the shore, it feels like 80 degrees, stormtracker 6 live double scan, the beginning of a stormy night and lancaster, chester county. approaching a cold front, juiced up electric atmosphere.

the line should approach philadelphia, wilmington and trenton at 7:30 this evening, then into interior southern new jersey by 10:00, then it makes it to the shore late tonight and will linger at the shore tomorrow morning at 8:00 with a lot of clouds area wide and scattered showers and downpours and as a front approaches, and arthur is off the coast, that interacts with the front, we see tropical downpours in philadelphia at 11:00 tomorrow morning, don't worry at the shore late tomorrow and evening, rain pulls out and lingers and we see the return of sun north and west at 3:00 tomorrow afternoon, improving the deeper into the day we get from west to east. from the shore, a couple hundred miles or so, winds 20 to 30 miles per hour, waves 6 to 8 feet, a high surf advisory is in place, with the dangerous rip currents, meteorologist melissa
