imagine loving your numbers. good afternoon. happy fourth of july to you. rick and sarah are off. i am alicia vitarelli. the rain postponed many parades. the big story is hurricane arthur. and cape may, new jersey and wet weather. strong rip currents are keeping people out of the water and off the beach for now. it was a miserable morning in atlantic city along the beaches. you show the action cam the waves crashing on the shoreline there. many are heading to the jersey shore for the holiday weekend. instead they were stuck inside

this morning. we are heading over to the big board david murphy, the latest from accuweather. it's not going to look like that all day right david? >>reporter:no, it's not. they didn't cancel their plans. we are excepting improvement this afternoon. now at the noon how are things are going according to schedule. the rain, the heaviest of it is off the coast. the last of the rain along the jersey shore is beginning to break up and beginning to be not as much of an issue. it could hang in for another hour or more. you can see it push away from us. philadelphia is in the process of drying out. obviously, big time improvement. the wide view with satellite, i'll point out the back edge of the cloud cover chasing the storm away is getting close to battle. places like gettysburg to our

west and harrisburg sees sunshine returning. it's thinner cloud cover. we expect the sunshine to make a run back at us west to he's as we roll through the afternoon. the flash floods are cancelled expect right along the coast where we see the showers. this is going off the board before too much loncker. ri-- longer.if you get caught ip current, which is the water pushed ashore and then escapes. you swim north or south parallel to the beach you will get out of rip current and then you will be able to travel no problem. stay near a lifeguard. 71 in wilmington. 66 in allentown.

the cloud cover is thick. we had the rain and suppressing temperatures for now. center city is up to 80 when the weather improves. we have wind gusts. the center of the storm is close to the coast, at least relativelrelatively speaking. if you are driving around the region for the next several hours in a minivan or a box truck or something larger an r.v. you want to watch out. take it slow and hold onto the wheel steady in case the gust comes along. i would be careful on the ben franklin for example. the rest of the weekend is coming up. as david mentioned hurricane arthur hit hard when it made landfall

atlantic city boardwalk is almost empty today as the brunt of hurricane arthur is not expected to hit the jersey shore, the rain is keeping people inside. a few people braved the beach this morning. but for the most part the waves poured onto the beaches in atlantic city instead of the people today. >> i left early. i figured there would be traffic. there was no one on the highway, no one. >> i was hoping to see the sun out. it's not going to happen today. >>reporter:the group of friends came into atlantic city hoping to catch the fireworks. >> i was going to pick any week i want. i am going to see the fireworks. it's supposed to be the top five of the country. >>reporter:it forced cities up and down the jersey shore to postpone their fireworks. it's rescheduled for sunday night. newly bought umbrellas in hand, this group is making the most of it.

>> all the casinos and restaurants are bummed too. we are here to enjoy ourselves. we are going to have a great time as always. >> we always have nun atlantic city. we love it here, we love it. >>reporter:for a full list of all the fireworks shows that have been rescheduled head to our website 6abc.com. and severe thunderstorms dealt another punch across the delaware and lehigh valleys last night. trees toppled cross philadelphia and its suburbs. the action cam found arcing wires sparked by a fallen branch at gifford street in the summerton section of philadelphia. the peco crews are making repairs. the storms knocked power out to tens of thousands of homes. the most still without power is peco customers. they have under 50,000 customers still in the dark. chester county was hit the hardest. peco is working to restore power

phillies atlantic county are investigating a deadly shooting. they found a man in his 30s shot twice in his neck and head. he was found next to a running vehicle on 9th near jackson late last night. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. new jersey stat state police are investigating. it's an amazing video showing the inside of the costa concordia. there was haunted images of a disaster frozen in time. 32 people were killed when a ship slammed into a rock in shallow waters. the vessel will be floated to a nearby port and scrapped. it's a tragedy at sea could be the final haunting pictures from inside that deadly wreck. a remarkable sight in arizona. huge clouds of dust it's known as a habub and flights were held

it was a damp and dreary start this fourth of july but it's look up with david murphy. >>reporter:stormtracker 6 double scan you see that a lot of the western suburbs and philadelphia are in the process of drying out. the big issue is down at the shore. there are heavy rain bands that are pushing back into the coast. the problem is that the center of the storm that is producing these is starting to pull away from us. the dry air is coming from the west. you have battleground going on

right. over the next hour or two you will see cape may don't dry up a bit. it takes longer north for that to happen. it's a day of improvement. if we go out wide we do have a little lingering rain in the northern suburbs. this is not very much. it pushing out of buck's county before too much longer. as we take a look outside, sky6. not a lot of action on the beach right now. things at least dry out and brighten up a bit. we'll see a few more bodies down there. 71 is the temperature currently. we had trouble getting the number to rise a bit with the clouds and rain. it will start to jump up over the next couple of hours. up to 80. 61 is the dewpoint. an occasion tha indication thats drying out. 66 in allentown. 68 in wilmington.
