good morning. >> good to be here. >> unfortunately, not much of a celebration for many on the east coast. >> good morning, look at this. arthur's destructive path. making landfall on the barrier islands of north carolina on thursday, with peak winds up to 100 miles an hour. it's become a tropical storm overnight off nantucket and cape cod. it's now heading to nova scotia. >> it's the first hurricane to make landfall since isaac in 2012. and the first hurricane of category 2 or greater since ike struck texas in september of 2008. arthur made landfall earlier on the calendar than any other hurricane in north carolina's history. let's get to beaufort, north carolina. matt gutman is there. matt? >> that's right. arthur made landfall right about here. so powerful, the winds knocked you off your feet. they were so fierce, they snapped anchor cables like this.

creating a domino effect. you see four of them lined up behind me. the story was all about wind. in the northeast, all about water. overnight, hurricane arthur downgraded to a tropical storm as it moves off the east coast. waves battering new york, new jersey, and connecticut. flash flooding in massachusetts and rhode island. >> it's deep. look at this. it's past the curb. the water is unbelievable here. >> reporter: in new bedford, massachusetts, people are salvaging their belongings after water flooded their basement. >> it was up to here. >> reporter: at one point, arthur was packing up to 60-mile-an-hour winds, packing rains, and forms this water spout. fireworks canceled or postponed for most of the east. in new york, the macy's spectacular barges moved south. but the show went on. and power is still out for thousands in parts of north carolina, where arthur crashed in early friday. the wind blasting in at 100 miles per hour. clearly, the wind is pretty bad. i'm going to get out of this.

and this morning, the cleanup. after seven hours of gusts left some communities stranded underwater, burying homes in sand and nearly wiping out highway 12. with no reports of injuries or catastrophic damage, the governor of north carolina was pleased. >> this has actually been a very good day. >> reporter: but east coasters still made the most of their july 4th. surfers catching the massive waves off the jersey shore. and enjoying the beach in cape cod. that's why one reason a lot of folks here jokingly called this the perfect storm. it came in overnight, caused very little damage. hurt nobody. pushed up the swells for the surfers. and left in time for most people, other than the boat owners behind me, to enjoy a beautiful fourth of july weekend. ryan? >> okay, matt. hopefully things are turning around. too much rain in the east. not enough in the west. add in the wind, more and more fires out of control.

more and more breaking out in california. firefighters struggling to keep on top of them. mike boettcher is in los angeles with more. >> reporter: good morning, ryan. flames destroyed several homes in northern california, but fortunately, nobody was hurt. it's another example of california's dry and dangerous wildfire season. breaking overnight, california ablaze. three more fires break out in northern california. in solano county, just outside san francisco, residents were forced to evacuate. as a deaf stating wildfire consumed eight homes and damaged three more. >> not much of a chance with the wind out here blowing. like i said, we were grabbing water hoses. neighbors were grabbing water hos hoses. fire extinguishers. >> reporter: some families forced to evacuate. the smoke plumes above could be seen from over 50 miles away, with flames reaching up to 200 feet in the air. in roseville, black smoke filled

the air. residents had barely enough time to escape. >> they were in the house when it was on fire. and someone came up and started banging on the door to get out of the house. >> reporter: while firefighters got the flames under control, it comes at the end of a tense week of fires across the state. as the drought season intensifies. and with a scarce water supply, citizens are feeling the heat. fires are dominating the golden state, destroying more than 6,000 acres state-wide since the beginning of this week. in napa valley, thousands of acres of land burned until the weather helped put the flames out on wednesday, with eight fires active in the state this is just the beginning of a long fire season. because of persistent dry temperatures and extreme drought, it's proving to be a long and dangerous fire season. bianna? >> those firefighters trying to contain the blaze. mike, our thanks to you. so we have arthur hitting the east coast. raging fires out west. let's check in with jason

nicholas, from our abc station in cleveland, wews. talk us through the big weather stories. >> good morning to you. great to be here on the fourth of july weekend. the good news with arthur is, no longer a hurricane. arthur is pulling out. moving out to sea. cold water here across the north atlantic. so it will weaken rapidly. behind it, terrific weather. from boston down through washington, philly, new york city. temperatures in the upper 70s, lower 80s. cooler, dryer, less humid air as well. the heat going out west. no rain in sight. look at these temperatures. well into the triple digits from redding to palm springs. the heat continues. and again, staying dry. the winds will die down a bit. a little humidity across the central part of the country. we'll take a look at the severe storm threat coming up in just a few. ryan? all right, thank you. and now to the nation's immigration crisis and a hot new battleground in the border war. angry protesters taking to the street again in a small southern california town protesting plans

to house undocumented immigrants there. abc's jeff zeleny has more on the showdown. jeff? >> reporter: good morning, ryan. those protests are being heard right back here at the white house. as the administration tries to contain this escalating humanitarian crisis. this morning, immigrations at a boiling point. protesters a rallied in california, pushing back against a surge of immigrants illegally crossing the u.s. border. at the same time, president obama presided over an independence day naturalization ceremony in washington. >> america is and always has been a nation of immigrants. >> reporter: immigration reform, once a high priority for both political parties in washington, is now off the table. because of a deep and unmoving partisan divide. >> you have people chanting ignorant slogans back and forth. no one is really listening. there's not a dialogue. and so that's -- that's unfortunate. >> reporter: the president saying he'll act because congress has not. >> the basic idea of welcoming

immigrants to our shores is central to our way of life. it's in our dna. >> reporter: at the white house, the president honoring famous chef jose andres. as the outstanding american by choice. an award for new american citizens. we talked to him earlier this year about immigration reform. >> the very simple question we need to be asking congress is, why? why are we making something so simple so political? >> reporter: but the immigration debate in the border cities rages on. overnight, another plane with undocumented immigrants landed in san diego. and buses like this one are reported to be taking immigrants to another location to avoid more protests. the white house is asking congress for $2 billion to help speed the deportation of the women and children who have entered the country illegally and to strengthen border security.

ryan? >> jeff, strong feelings on both sides of the debate. after testifying at a homeland security field meeting this week, texas governor rick perry will be in the hot seat on abc's "this week." promising to be a strong interview. >> texas and california two of the hardest hit states in regards to this issue. it will be a great interview to hear there him. meantime, a check of the rest of the morning's top stories. happy 4th. fifth. >> breaking news. four children were killed overnight in philadelphia. a blaze erupted in the southwest part of the city just before 3:00 this morning. quickly spread to several adjacent homes. in addition to the children killed, 40 people were left homeless. the fire destroyed eight houses. one witness was awakened by the smoke. she quickly grabbed her sleeping children. she and her children were able to escape. officials are up vest fwating the cause of the fire. in brazil, fighting erupts

on the streets of brasilia as fans gathered to watch the match against colombia on a big screen. a man wearing an argentina team jersey got into a fight. one woman was crushed on the ground. injuring her spiz. spine. the melee happened as brazil won. team brazil's biggest star striker, neymar, suffered a broken vertebrae in the match and will be out for the rest of the world cup. let me give you a reminder. you can watch the quarter final action later on abc and on espn. breaking overnight, a gunman opened fire on a crowded street in indianapolis, wounding seven people, one of them critically. this incident occurred early this morning outside of a shoe repair shop. the police have a person of interest in custody. they're investigating if this was a random incident or a targeted shooting. if you're traveling through europe, expect longer delays. getting on your flight back to the u.s. france says it's stepping up

screening at its airports for u.s.-bound flights because of concerns that terrorists may be plotting new attacks on planes with explosives that are harder to detect. and, first daughter malia obama got to celebrate her sweet 16th birthday in a big way. she was on hand to see pit bull, one of ryan's favorites, entertain military families on the white house lawn in a huge celebration. the president, her dad, giving a shoutout to his daughter. >> this is always a special day for us because this is malia's birthday. [ cheers and applause ] she's getting her license, but she has to practice a little bit before that happens. >> hillary clinton did have advice for the president and malia. she said former president bill clinton went to camp david to help teach chelsea how to drive. i guess that's the place to learn how to drive. and finally -- >> if your dad is president. >> if your dad is president,

>> you would not want it that way? >> i would not want it that way. i thing i had the perfect p proposal. on to this big weekend for cookouts. a huge chicken recall. 1 million pounds produced by foster farms with a best used by date between march 21 and 29 sold in nine western states might have been contaminated with salmonella. let's bring in dr. jennifer ashton. first let's talk about salmonella. remind us what the symptoms are and why it's dangerous. >> this is a bacterial food-borne issue. nausea, vomiting. we see the symptoms about 8 to 72 hours after consuming the food. there are more than 1 million cases of salmonella poisoning in this country every year. most go unreported. but they do kill about 400 people every year. we need to take it seriously. >> when you go to a barbecue. put us in your mind. because she loves a good barbecue.

put us in your mind. oh, yeah. what do you look at in terms of safety concerns? >> i typically look at it through the medical filter of three issues. and basically, that's choking. burns you can get around a barbecue. and food poisoning. that's the big one. luckily, these things don't happen often. we want to minimize the risk. >> what are some of the safety precautions to take at barbecues? in terms of food poisoning. >> don't try to eat 61 hot dogs like joey chestnut. >> and if you do, don't chew them. >> that's right. today, if you're going out. you're stocking up for the barbecue later. you want to make the grocery store the last stop so the foods don't sit in a hot car. if you're in an area over 90 degrees, one hour maximum before the food needs to be in the refrigerator. and then the big ones. we hear so much about cooking temperature. it bears repeating. hot foods need to stay hot. over 140 degrees after they've been cooked. don't just put them on the picnic table. and keep the cold foods cold.

and that means, under 40 degrees, so keep them on ice. >> great advice. >> have a good one. >> thank you, jen. >> you bet. now to the missing baby found because a quick-thinking gas station worker noticed the woman minding her was acting strangely and called the cops. bazi kanani is here with the story. good morning, bazi. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. this morning, a 6-month-old baby girl is safe, back at home with her mother. and her kidnapper behind bars. all because a convenience store clerk trusted her gut and called the police. >> how can i help you? >> i have a lady who broke down on the freeway. she's acting really weird. >> reporter: karen atkins was working the cash register in arizona last wednesday when 57-year-old karen ferguson came in with a baby. atkins said ferguson was acting strangely. trying to feed the infant cappuccino and couldn't answer simple questions about the girl's name. that's when she dialed 911.

>> i just, my gut is wrong. i don't know. no one is missing a baby, right? >> not that i'm aware of. >> reporter: but somebody was missing a baby. 300 miles away. in huntington beach, california. an amber alert issued earlier that day for 6-month-old lelani moseley, last seen with her grandmother, karen ferguson who is bipolar and off her medication. atkins was able to keep ferguson distracted until police arrived. >> it's a mom thing. if it wasn't her baby, it would kill me if i let her walk out that door and know later on that it wasn't hers and i could have done something at that moment. >> reporter: this morning, police are thanking atkins for her quick thinking. and for trusting her intuition. >> had it not been for her and how observant she was, we probably wouldn't be standing here with a successful story right now. >> reporter: ferguson, the

finding their accounts have been invaded and the crazy rumors they're forced to deny. but first, the inflatable slide with a trip just out "the wizard of oz." >> it went airborne. michelle franzen is here with more. >> reporter: quite a sight. kids were just lining up to get on the slide. workers operating the ride said they were wrapping up their final safety checks when winds whipped in and sent this massive slide up into the air. another inflatable mishap. this time, a dust devil in nevada causing panic at an independence day celebration. >> i was thinking, oh, my god, i hope there are no children in there. >> reporter: wind gusts so powerful, some are calling it a minitornado that launched this inflatable slide some 300 feet above the trees. knocking over lamp posts and everything else in the path. >> shot it toward a tree where

my son was sitting. flipped it up into the air. it went higher than a lot of the buildings and just landed way over there. >> reporter: at least two people were taking to a local hospital and treated for injuries sustained from flying debris. including one woman who required stitches on her head. this is hot the first time we have seen bounce house celebrations marred by dangerous wind-driven accidents. this is the third reported occurrence in as many months. in june, two colorado children were caught inside a bouncy house when it broke away. turning sheer fun into panic. >> i was going down the slide. the bouncy house picked up. i landed. and then i went back up. and then i started screaming. >> i, um, had a strained back. a sprained ankle. hit my head and some stomach pains. >> reporter: in may, two children were injured in new york. when another bounce house went airborne. back in 2011, this bounce house accident on long island sent 13 people to the hospital.

jolted by the violent ride. now luckily, no one was on the ride at the time. given the crowds gathering and waiting, officials say this holiday mishap could have been far worse. >> it's like the second or third time you have brought us one of these stories. it's a problem. >> it is a problem. it's increasing, according to some of these statistics out there. >> they didn't see the wind coming. michelle, thank you. >> thank you so much. now an update of the morning's top stories. >> hi, brian. ryan. i'm calling you brian. that's happened before, right in ryan, ryan. and you are? bianna? >> last time i checked. we begin with the huge cleanup as hurricane arthur makes his exit. overnight, downgraded to a tropical storm. as it moved up the east coast, waves battering new york, new jersey, and into new england. power is is still out for thousands in north carolina. and in california, eight fires are burning in the northern part of that state.

residents in solano county are forced to evacuate by the fires in those areas. they came quickly roaring in. and a freight train carrying airplane parts derailed in montana, sending the fuselages of several 737s down an embankment. the train was headed to the boeing plant in washington state. and finally. florida beachgoers got a fourth of july surprise. a baby dolphin washed ashore. it was struggling in the shallow water. when the wild life officials arrived. they were able to get it out of the water. the dolphin is now being cared for by the clearwater marine aquarium. hope to be released in the wild soon. happy ending. >> i like that. >> bianna. >> not breanna. bianna. >> ryan. and you are? >> i'm sorry? >> there's nothing on the prompter right now. i don't know what to say to this.
