are mixing that sun with clouds especially down the shore. sprinkles getting close to clearing the coast. we'll keep our eyes out to the west for more thunderstorms to pop up later today. 73 is the current temperature in philadelphia. not too bad. actually still in the 60's in allentown and reading and trenton even out in lancaster. 73 in sea isle city. and as we roll through the day it is going to be a warm one. 76 by 9 o'clock, 85 by noon and your high is that 89-degree mark that will probably be sitting on or about 3 o'clock. and through the afternoon there is that chance of a pop-up spotty thunderstorm where they happen to hit they could be strong and gusty. not everybody sees them this afternoon, though. we are getting enough sun in play where once again we've got that sunburn alert up. if you're headed to the pool, the beach or just working outside u.v. index will be running high at times so lather up with that sun unscreen. when i go inside we'll show you the storms on future tracker 6 and word of better weather heading towards the weekend. matt war roads looking like. >> light at the end of the

tunnel david. now that things are getting light outside we're starting to see more of the storm damage pop up that occurred last evening. in claymont word of traffic light troubles because of a downed pole closing philadelphia pike between governor prince boulevard and manor avenue. you can use those two to get around the blockage at philadelphia pike. as we slide up into delco traffic light troubles along providence road. 252 at rose tree road, also providence road closing during the middays in upper darby township but that doesn't start until 9 o'clock. in bryn mawr 320 is blocked because of downed tree. sproul road between conestoga and bryn mawr. in bryn mawr lancaster avenue traffic lights out between county line road and railroad avenue. when you come to a dark set of traffic lights best bet, treat that like a four-way stop. crash in whitpain township along skippack pike and ivory road is involving a deer. camera time along 95 work zone at cottman avenue little bit

of southbound traffic but no major delays. you'll see delays if you try to take the chestnut hill east regional rail line. in fact you won't see any service whatsoever. suspended after last night's storms. the other lines are running normally. septa's 101 trolley shuttle buses instead of trolleys between scenic road and media. matt. >> new video of the heavy damage of the gusty storms. katherine scott is live in mount airy one of the many areas that has some cleaning up to do. katherine. >> reporter: matt, those storms were powerful and here in this parking lot in the 300 block of east mount airy people are dealing with quite a bit of damage. this tree uprooted and smashed down on top of these cars in this parking lot. it took down lines as well and residents around here and across our area have been dealing with power outages and property damage. trees down, power out after storms raced across our area last night. in chadds ford a tree came crashing down, this one onto

cars parked on the 400 block of baltimore pike. owners were out taking stock of the damage. >> i haven't looked at mine yet but her car has broken windshield, damage to the fender and hood. >> reporter: the road was blocked on the 8300 block of mansfield in mount airy. a telephone pole had split, wires were hanging low. drivers were being differented. in east mount airy a heavy branch dropped down on the 600 block of vernon and landed right on top of a white mustang parked below. in wissinoming the storms were strong enough to topple this massive tree on mckinley street. neighbors say it all seemed to happen in slow motion. >> a big gust of wind came. we seen this tree just tip over. >> reporter: and back here live in mount airy you can see the lines are down. some of this tree has already been chopped up and put into a pile here of logs, but the base of it is still lying across two of these cars here.

still some cleanup left to do. utility crews have been out all night. we did see peco crews here earlier. they're working to get the power back on here and across the area. live in mount airy, katherine scott channel6 "action news. >> thank you katherine. keep track of the accuweather forecast by downloading our free storm tracker 6 app. it gives you will access to live radar, the hourly forecasts and weather alerts posted for your area. >> fire officials released a time line they say shows firefighters responded quickly to the deadly southwest philadelphia blaze over the weekend. that fire on gesner street filled four small children. angry residents said it took much too long for firefighters to get to the scene but officials say the fire department got the first call at 2:44 a.m. and one minute, eight seconds later the first engine was dispatched. less than a minute later a firefighter from a nearby firehouse called for reinforcements. one minute, 27 seconds later ladder four arrived. that was about three minutes after the first call. liberia's ambassador to

the united states toured the fire scene last night. he says he came to philadelphia to feel the hurt, comfort the families and urge calm in the grieving community. >> how can we move from this place forward? how can we prevent this kind of thing if happening tomorrow? it is this family today. it could be another family tomorrow. now what lesson do we learn from this? >> congressman bob brady accompanied the ambassador in a meeting with the victims' families. brady says his office will help with any immigration issues that may rise with paperwork ma that may have been lost in the blaze. a man in berks county has turned himself in for a road rage case involving an ambulance. police say 20-year-old jonathan esbach tried to run the emergency vehicle off the road yesterday. it happened on route 222 in burn township while the ambulance was dispatched to pick up a patient. he reportedly followed the

driver to saint joseph regional health network where he attacked him. no one else was hurt. >> tuition is going up for thousands of college students in pennsylvania. maribel aber details the higher education hike live at the nasdaq in times square. good morning, maribel. >> reporter: hey, good morning, matt. tuition at pennsylvania's 14 state universities is indeed going up. rates will rise by $99 per semester for the upcoming school year. for full time students who are pennsylvania residents that adds up to $3,410 per semester. u.s. oil production next year is expected to be at a 43 year high more than 9 million barrels a day will be produced. this is according to a government estimate. that's the most since 1972. much of the increase is coming from fracking and shale rock deposits. let's talk stocks. they pulled back. the dow sank below 17,000 and the s & p and nasdaq also tumbled. right now futures are pointing to a mixed open. honda recalling as many as

1 million eighty four more accords due to an air bag problems. that brings the total number to about 3 million. the expansion of the recall is limited to cars in california. honda is one of eight automakers recalling cars with problems with air bags made by japan. that's the latest in business news from the nasdaq market site. back over to you matt ander ring. >> thanks maribel. lots of people still without power. >> yeah. >> and more storms could roll in later today. >> yeah, they're probably -- >> buy. >> bye. they'll probably be spotty this afternoon. storm tracker 6 double scan we've got dry conditions across most of the region. i'll go in tighter on the shore. things are getting better at the shore. we had some showers just lingering a little bit through the morning hours and now they have pushed off the coast with the exception of right along areas just to the east of the garden state parkway and they're pretty light at this point. things getting better there. stepping outside we have sunshine mixing with clouds across the region although down at the shore the clouds are a little bit thicker and that's a what we've got for

you on sky 6 right now. i would imagine there would be some folks on the beach later this morning. 73 degrees in philadelphia currently, 72 wilmington, still in the 60's up north in trenton allentown and reading and 73's on the boardwalk in atlantic city and along sea isle city. as we take a look at future tracker 6, not a lot of rain around this morning. this afternoon, though, there could be a couple of pop-up showers or thunderstorms and where they hit, they could feature strong gusty winds. i think most of you miss out on this today. they won't be as widespread as last night. but i would take cover if a storm forms. as we get to 10 o'clock things are starting to die down. allentown looks like it's going to be warm still rather humid, 87 degrees is the high. can't rule out a thunderstorm popping up here or there especially during the afternoon. as we take a look at the shore, a couple of showers around this morning, maybe a couple of more as we go through the day. noon temperature 81, 3 o'clock 84, that's about as high as we get. the u.v. index is high because at times the sun will be out but you have to get ready to clear the beach if you hear thunder just in case there's

one of those spotty storms headed your way. in philadelphia a high of 89, partly sunny, spotty storms possible. winds out of the southwest at eight to 16 miles per hour and numbers are going to climb out of the 70's into the 80's by about 10 or 11 o'clock this morning and then we'll be in the upper 80's at 2 o'clock and 5 o'clock with that 89-degree high probably around 3 o'clock this afternoon. tomorrow it looks mainly dry through the morning and mainly drew through the afternoon if we do see a light spotty shower it will probably likely be on the southeast half of the region and maybe a thunderstorm but i think today or tomorrow i should say is the transition day toward better weather. 89 is today's high, warm and humid, a spotty thunderstorm in a couple of neighborhoods can't be ruled out particularly in the afternoon and evening. clouds and sun on thursday, 86, slight chance of a spotty shower, maybe a rumble of thunder. friday nice and warm with a high of 87 and that is going to be the pick of the week but actually saturday is now improving, too. we'll go nice and bright with maybe a few more clouds as the day goes on. humidity probably behaving itself for the most part and we're going to take out any

>> that is postcard perfect. traffic the match by any chance, matt? >> just a little under postcard perfect but it is hump day so how can we not be happy we love the hump day, matt and erin. looking okay on the schuylkill expressway. most of the highways are in pretty good shape. just a little building eastbound volume on 76 coming from conshohocken headed in toward the curve in the normal spot where we would expect that volume to build at this hour of the morning especially when you're seeing that sun glare but on those secondary roads, yes, issue this morning. traffic light troubles in bryn mawr along lancaster avenue between county line road and railroad avenue. that's one of many spots where the lights are dark or flashing at this hour. treat those dark intersections, the dark traffic lights like four-way stop signs. also 320 sproul road shut down pretty long stretch between conestoga road and bryn mawr avenue. stay over on ithan avenue as an alternate. in delco along providence road

at rose tree road traffic lights are also out. so use caution there. providence road is closing in upper darby township by penn pines diner at springfield road between that point and lansdowne avenue 9 until 3 o'clock for water main replacement. in claymont more traffic light troubles because of a damaged traffic signal pole at seminole avenue by the prima hoagies. philadelphia pike shut down between governor prince avenue and manor avenue. in cherry hill -- in evesham township downed tree and downed wires closing greentree road so 70 works as an alternate three on your side case. matt. >> okay matt thanks. two skydivers will a close brush with death in perkasie bucks county. their parachute malfunctioned causing them to hit the ground hard in a yard outside an elementary school yesterday. the skydivers had flown out of pennridge airport a mile away and jumped out of this plane. both suffered serious injuries but survived the fall. >> happening today, a court

hearing for curtis reeves, jr., man accused of killing another man in a florida movie theater. today's hearing could set a fall date for the murder trial police say reeves shot 43-year-old chad olson to death in january over olson's refusal to stop texting his daughter's babysitter during movie previews. refers' lawyer says reeves fired in self-defense. the defendant is in jail. a judge has denied his request for bail. >> a silicon valley ceo wants to make the internet free for more people. abc's ryan smith has tech bites. >> reporter: in today's tech bites universal internet mark zuckerberg says everyone should have access to the internet. it's the foundation of this economy and it shouldn't be hard to do. 90 percent of us already live within range of a cellular network. the electric toothbrush uses bluetooth to connect to a phone app. the wall streater journal admits she's skeptical at

♪ >> new on "action news" berks county residents are forced to beat the heat this week without air conditioning, all because of a copper thief. the wiring was connected to the cooling system at reading siling mill apartments. police are reviewing surveillance of the suspect and hope to track him down soon. in the meantime the landlord is placing window units in the apartments. >> we're still dealing with the effects of those storms on mass transit this morning. septa's chestnut hill east regional rail line completely halted. the chestnut hill west line is running as an alternate and septa is saying across-the-board on the rails you could see delays because of the storms last night. also the 101 trolley still not running.

the buses are running instead between scenic road and media. camera time along 422 at oaks, a little building eastbound volume. on 42 in camden county same deal, building northbound volume headed towards 295, david. >> all right matt we have sun breaking out across parts of the region and we're in the low 70's in most neighborhoods. 79 by 9 o'clock. by noon 85. your high today is that 89-degree reading at 3 o'clock. it will still be somewhat humid today and during the afternoon in particular there's another chance of a the least a spotty strong thunderstorm so take cover if a storm happens to head in your direction. down at the airport so far this morning we've been looking at green airplanes on the board. that's good news. no major delays if our frequently traveled destinations. not picking up any rain in those spots either. erin. >> thanks, david. coffee could help you lose extra weight as long as you're working out. spanish study found athletes who took caffeine before working out burned about 15 more calories hours after

>> the line of severe thunderstorms that barreled through our region hit northern ohio first spawning two tornadoes. the national weather service rated both ef1 tornadoes with winds of up to 94 miles per hour. the path of destruction was nearly seven and a half miles long. much of the damage involved trees that were knocked down or uprooted. >> a missouri woman is living a scene out of a horror film. katrina mcghaw says she discovered a serial killer once lived in the home she is renting. she only found out after seeing a documentary about the

killer maury travis. travis recorded some of the crimes that happened downstairs. >> it was basic his torture chamber not okay. >> her landlord turns outer to be the killer's mother. she refused to let mcghaw out of the lease. missouri law does not require landlords to disclose violent crimes that occur in homes but the saint louis housing authority has stepped in to help mcghaw break the lease. >> 6:27 now. meteorologist, david murphy is tracking the chance for more storms later today. >> a fire department on the defense. hear one of the first 911 of saturday's tragic fire in

after opening fire on police at the jersey shore. >> powerful storms leave behind a path of destruction and thousands of people are still in the dark. >> and the severe weather may not be over yet. storm tracker 6 live double scan radar will be scanning the chance for more storms later today. good morning everyone, 6:30 on this wednesday. tam is off, erin o'hearn joins us. we have david and mat filling in for karen. good morning. >> good morning everybody. it's a nice start this morning with sun up over the horizon, temperatures notate bad as you'll see shortly. look at satellite. we've had rain showers down shore. those are getting fairly close to getting off the coast and out to the west a fair amount of sunshine butter still humid and unstable. later today we'll be looking at a pop-up thunderstorm. 73 and dry in philadelphia. still a little bit on the muggy side. and comfortable numbers up in the northern suburbs where we're still in the 60's. as we roll through the day accuweather says it's going to be warm, still a bit on the humid side, 79 degrees by 9 o'clock, 85 by noon and then during the afternoon we do get up to that high of 89 by 3 o'clock and there is that chance of a spotty strong

thunderstorm here and there. want to take cover if one of those heads your way. there's enough sun in play today where we've still got a sunburn alert though. so if you're headed to the shore, the pool or just working outside make sure you put that sunscreen on for that high u.v. index. more on today's storms on future tracker 6 and word of better weather coming toward the end of the seven day forecast from accuweather, okay, matt. >> that's good news. that sun is helping us see the damage from last night's storms, david. we're dodging a lot of debris as we head out of the neighborhoods this morning and because of storm damage, we're not running on the chestnut hill east line this morning. all trains halted not in service whatsoever, chestnut hill west line is running but septa saying across-the-board on the regional rails you could see delays because of weather related problems. also their 101 trolley is not running. the shuttle buses are running instead between scenic road and media and of course we'll keep you posted on all of these mass transit issues and but camera time here along 95. looking dry at least. things have dried out just a little bit busy on the

southbound side from past the betsy ross bridge into girard. but on the secondary roads we have more substantial problems. a lot of traffic lights out like in the heart of bryn mawr along lancaster avenue. 320 sproul road shut down between conestoga road and bryn mawr avenue. stay on ithan avenues a possible alternate. in upper providence dark traffic lights at rose tree road. down in northern delaware traffic lights out because of a downed traffic signal at seminole avenue along philadelphia pike. that's completely blocked off between governor prince boulevard and manor avenue. matt. >> thank you matt. we begin with a developing story. in atlantic city new jersey where neighbors say an armed man fired shots at police during a standoff overnight. swat teams first surrounded the man at a home along the 600 block of elberon avenue. the barricade lasted an hour and a half and then the man suddenly ran out the back door naked. police quickly took him into

custody and sent him to the hospital for an evaluation. no officers were hurt. local utilities continue their efforts to restore power knocked out by that fast moving storm system. at last check peco reported 71,000 outages. chester county has the most with 30,000. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live in the city's mount airy neighborhood with a closer look at some of that damage. >> reporter: some of the apartments lost power and some of the owners of these cars are dealing with quite a bit of damage. you can see a big tree uprooted in this parking lot on the 300 block of east mount airy avenue and fell across several cars crushing a few of them and you can see it took down power lines as well. we saw damage like this across the area last night. >> big gust of wind just came. then we see this tree just tip over. >> reporter: this tree in wissinoming was no match for last night's storm. it uprooted and neighbors watched as it fell across the roadway on the 4500 block of mckinley street hitting the

cars in its path down. in wilmington, the wind whipped through fourth street. people caught in the downpour hurried to get out of the rain or huddled beneath umbrellas. in mount airy allen's lane was blocked off. a large tree came crashing down across the 500 block. its long branches reaching across the road. parkside avenue between 53rd and bryn mawr was also closed because of. police on the scene after another tree cashed down there. drivers were being different different -- different -- diverted. you can see that big heavy section is still crushing several cars here. so even though crews have been out cleaning up we do know there is more cleanup left to do. we're live in mount airy. katherine scott channel6 "action news. >> thank you katherine. "action news" learned overnight that a young camper caught in a strong thunderstorm in maryland has died. a tree fell on a group of

seven children in the river valley ranch in manchester while they were walking to a storm shelter last night. one child died later from his injuries. the other six suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. with more storms in the forecast be sure to download the free storm tracker 6 app now. get live radar and breaking weather alerts on your apple and android devices. >> the philadelphia fire department has released a time line of saturday's gesner street fire including the dramatic 911 calls to quell anger over its response. >> 6517 gesner street. four houses are on fire. >> all right. >> all right, please hurry. >> that frantic call came in less than three minutes after the initial report at 2:44. by then the fire department said it had already sent an engine to the scene and backup was not far behind. >> that incident went from three houses to eight houses in 10 minutes. so, if that fire had been burning for 30 minutes like

everyone said the whole block would have burnt down. >> four children died in the blaze. will i be ya''s ambassador to the united states is in town to help the neighborhood with ties to the country heal. >> the fate of a cigarette tax increase to fund philadelphia public schools remains uncertain this morning. the pennsylvania senate amended the bill and sen it back to the house. the measure calls for the two dollars a pack hike to expire in five years. there are also new provisions for hotel taxes. the changes require house members to come back and vote on a new bill and it is unclear when that would happen. mayor michael nutter says without the tax increase schools cannot afford to open on time. >> happening today, hundreds of casino workers are expected to fill the boardwalk to fight the closure of the showboat in atlantic city. 2100 jobs will be lost if the hotel closes next month. workers claim the showboat's owners, caesar's, want it to close down to protect other properties. new jersey assemblymen chris

brown is proposing a bill that in part would place a limit on the amount of casinos that a company quarterback allowed to own in atlantic city. >> david joins us now. we have a line of storms, really a fine line. today you say it will be more spotty in nature. >> more spotty but there could be a couple of strong once here and there. storm tracker 6 shows we're without any thunderstorms right now. we have showers moving off the coast, areas around atlantic city and garden state parkway seeing very light stuff but the heavier cells off out into the ocean. looks like cape may is in the process of drying out. we have one lightning strike but that's way off the coast. as we take a look outside we have sky 6 and you can see some sunshine starting to break out from behind those clouds that are centered now mainly over south jersey and the temperature currently is 73 degrees, a little bit lower than the last couple of mornings although the dewpoint is still up at 68 and that's an indication of fairly humid air. winds are light out of the west-southwest at 5 miles per hour. future tracker 6 shows you during the morning there might

be more sprinkles and showers especially down along the coast. as we get into the afternoon, say, two, 3, 4 o'clock we've got the chance of a couple of month are showers and some of these could actually produce thunderstorms and some of those thunderstorms could be gusty. now it's not the big line last night -- like we had last night as matt mentioned but where these things hit you'll have to watch out for that. by 6 o'clock looks like we're beginning to see this die down and later this evening we should see less of this as the evening hours progress. as we roll through the day it will be warm an bit muggy again. 76 by 8 o'clock, 88 by 2 o'clock with a high of 89 striking by about 3 o'clock and then guy the afternoon a chance of a spotty pop-up thunderstorm. high temperatures in the upper 80's across much of the region. we might hit a couple of 90's here or there. spotty storms possible. down the shore another bit of a break. the low to mid 80's down there. and then tomorrow a couple of more showers through the day but it looks like it will be generally drier. that front is continuing to push toward the coast and humidity should lower during the day, just a little bit of a sprinkle, shower or maybe an odd thunderstorm down toward

and manor avenue to snake your way around the closure. up into delaware county 320 remains shut down. that's sproul road between conestoga road and bryn mawr avenue. you need to avoid that. maybe stay over on ithan avenue as an an alternate n bryn mawr along 30 lancaster avenue still without a lot of those traffic lights so take it easy through there. treat them as four way stops. elsewhere on lancaster avenue in chester county as we continue our look at this area, they're start agnew paving project today later on today they're going to work mid days and then overnights redoing a big chunk of the avenue between 252 and old eagle school road so eventually you're going to have a much better ride in that area. in falls township bucks county, don't forget yesterday they closed old route 13 entirely for the next couple weeks for work on the pipes there between penn valley road and mill creek mark parkway. stay on throughout to get around that work zone. schuylkill expressway near girard avenue right by the zoo, a police officer off to the side here eastbound and some heavy eastbound traffic like normal headed into the
