fires on police during a standoff in atlantic city. how the suspect was finally caught. and police say they busted a fake travel agency at a home in new jersey. but the big story is the aftermath of powerful storms that left 260,000 people without power. chopper 6 hd was over some of the damage this morning. large trees were knocked on to homes this morning across the area. and crews are still trying to restore electricity to tens of thousands of customers. we have live team coverage of the cleanup, david murphy has more and "action news" reporters katherine scott and john rawlins are checking out the damage. lets begin with john in radnor township. >> reporter: it was an intense quick-hitting storm that came through the western suburbs last night. it didn't have much rain in it, but it had considerable wind but it doomed some mature trees like

the one behind me. from meeting house lane in lower merion, the blitz krig storm took down trees and closed roads and blocked out power. in the heavily treed township of radno radnor,ed wulgling raw r fr fr fr the wind and rain hit here and there was a little bit of rain and the next thing i heard this big bang and the power when off and i looked out. >> cindy draper discovered it was one of her great trees that came down. and peco is telling people it could be days before power returns. >> it could be friday at 6:00. a long 48 hours.

>> reporter: so a large matt tourure tree and a peco line, it could take several days to untangle all of this and restore power in this part of delaware county. live in radnor, john rawlins, channel 6 "action news." >> lets switch live to "action news" reporter, katherine scott in chester with more from homeowners impacted by the storms there. >> there are trees down and lines down, this storm made a mess. if you look down chester, can you see there are several utilities poll -- polls lying in the street. jane white head looked out of her home and saw this tree that came down blocking her garage. this morning a neighbor on the 200 block helped her clear the heavy branches so she could grab

her medication. >> it covered the alleyway too, into their yard so i couldn't get out. >> last evening the winds picked up in wilmington and it was pouring on fourth street. in mt. airy, this morning, the cleanup was underway, the tree was uprooted in the parking lot and crashed on to the cars beneath and this one on the cars blocked on the 400 block of baltimore pike. >> her car has a broken windshield and damage to the fender and hood. the poles were down on east 24th street in chester, the road blocked off to traffic. one man was in the kitchen when he suddenly heard a large crack. >> there was an explosion and the power came back on and another explosion and everything went black. >> there is still no power here

this morning. the providence medical hospital is 25% functioning today but the three dogs there didn't seem to mind. >> the animals are all healthy, they can compenstate for a 10% or 15 degree rise in temperature, they have water. >> the veterinary hospital was serving a family and one pole just narrowly missed their car. >> if they went out with the fire children, the pole was just 8 inches from their cars. >> here the traffic is still being diverted and peco crews are making repairs and making progress turning power back on, they were out here earlier and people here are anxiously awaiting their return. we are live in chester, katherine scott, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. >> here is a check of power

outages, peco has 54,000 customers, the worst are in montgomery, chester and bucks and delaware counties. in south jersey pseg working to restore power to 2500 customers. our team coverage continues with meteorologist, david murphy with more on the damaging winds that cause these outages. >> here is what the storm looked like, it was moving into the western suburbs at 7:00 and at 8:00 it moved into the area. and then by 9:00 it was at the shore and beginning to fall apart. we were warning that any storm that formed at night could form some strong damaging winds, and it did. 58 in lancaster and top gust in allentown 66 degrees and 62 miles per hour gust in

runnemede, new jersey. as we look at radar now, we are not looking at nearly as much significant rain but a shower has reemerged in southern delaware and pushing into south jersey, this is light rain and no thunderstorms yet and no lightning strikes. as we go later into the afternoon and evening, we are looking into two areas of precipitation and one is this line moving into the southern part of the region. we have a couple of areas of precip, lines of thunderstorms that move into western pennsylvania, both could be an issue today and tonight. we'll come back and see future tracker 6 where the next round of heavy hitters will form later today. >> can you keep track of the weather any time by downloading our free 6 abc storm tracker app, it has the hourly radar and forecast and weather alerts posted from your area. now investigators say that a

stolen suv crash nood a dart bush this afternoon. they were searched for the vehicle after a reported carjacking this morning. eva pilgram is live at the scene of the crash with an update. >> reporter: sara, let me explain to you how this accident happened, the dart bus was coming through this area driving down washington street when the suv coming up 55th street blew through the stop sign, the bus swerved past two cars here and slid to the fence right there and landed on that crushed bush, you see that there miraculously, missing any houses. around 6:00 this morning, a dart bus and suv collided here in delaware, police were looking for this suv after it was taken during a reported carjacking this morning. >> they saw it acting

erratically and tried to catch up to it. but at that point the car collided with a dart bus, after the driver of an suv ran a stop sign and t boned the bus. >> the operator was going at a high rate of speed when he ran the stop sign. >> the driver of the suv was trapped inside, rescue crew his to cut the 20-year-old man out and he was taken to an area hospital. there were only two people inside of the dart bus, the driver and one passenger, they were both taken to area hospitals with minor injuries. >> now, when you look at this bush, and see it's all that was damaged here and how small this sidewalk is. it really is amazing to think that people were hurt any worse and somehow the driver of the bus was able to get the bus around and all the cars and houses now. the name of the suspect is not yet released but we are told

that he is a convicted felon who is on probation and they expect to file charges later this afternoon. we are live in wilmington, eva pilgram, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. also, in delaware a newcastle father is accused of hiding 16 bags of heroin in his baby's diaper, police approached michael penn to arrest him for shoplifting, they later found the drugs in the baby's diaper, penn is charged and released on jail. the baby is released to the grandmother. city council addressed the fire that killed four small children on saturday. he was joined by the liberian ambassador to the united states, they discussed future measures

to prevent fire tragedies. >> a man who fired at atlantic city police in a standoff overnight is taken into custody. s.w.a.t. teams surrounded the area, and it lasted an hour and a half and the man ran out the back door naked. he was taken to the hop for evaluation. a burlington county woman faces charges of stealing more than $45,000 from her travel agency customers. medford police say that 67-year-old christine hazelton ran a travel agency out of her home. she sold people overseas travel packages for england and then told them the trip was canceled without refunding their money. still could open on "action

people in central new york are cleaning up after storms today. four people were killed in the rural town of smithfield. the national weather service confirmed a torn touched down creating the damage. a girl -- police is looking for the man that stole the teen's phone out of her hands, she jumped on the car as he tried to drive away and she fell and died two days later. they believe the phone was tossed out of the car. israeli leaders are wafrning that the offensive in the gaza strip is expanding. they say they struck 200 targets in hamas today. thousands of israeli troops are stationed there in advance of a

possible ground operation. the prime minister says the operation will continue until rocket fire aimed at israel comes to an end. obama administration officials are defending their response to the immigration crisis on the southwest border. they are appearing before a senate committee today. just yesterday president obama asked congress for $3.7 million. to deal with the influx of children arriving from central american, republicans believe that broader changes are needed. >> dozens of travelers stuck on the tarmac got a welcome surprise when they sat on the plane, some hot pizza, a frontier airlines pilot surprised the passengers with 35 pies monday night after storms diverted their plane to wyoming. dominoes delivered the pizzas to the runway and the plane was delayed for to hours before the

but it's rain. fairly light stuff for now, i am seeing yellow and that indicates that the rain will build and head towards the coast in the next half hour or so. as we look outside. we have the channel 6 zoo balloon and you can see how there is sun breaking through the clouds got a couple of highlights to your forecast and the first is today and it's unsettled. it gets better in the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast, now the temperature is 84 and it's warm out there. dew point in the mid-60s and that indicates somewhat humid air and wind in the south at 8 miles per hour. temperatures are in the low to mid-80s everywhere with a couple of exceptions. but it's feeling on the sticky side. there will at times be a pop-up shower or thunderstorms. anywhere a thunderstorm builds
