"sirens ] >> reporter: norfolk's harbor park and pennsylvania's hershey park submerged. almost 3 inches falling in two hours. so today when you get the warning on your phone, you see that alert, warning means it's imminent, it is happening or it's going to happen very soon. here's where you could see strong storms right along the front in the southeast and more so back in the plains so north plat platte, rapid city, in the orange, also a little bean in duluth could see strong wind, large hail and, of course, a brief tornado. it keeps going through the weekend and a whole lot more coming up including major heat for the pacific northwest. >> all right. >> summer is here. we turn to that escalating violence. evidence the conflict may be spreading with rockets flying from lebanon into israel now and look at this picture. an israeli air strike in gaza

this morning after the most serious attack yet in israel. this gas station going up in flames and abc's martha raddatz is in jerusalem. her own plane rerouted. here's the latest. >> reporter: within ten minutes of arriving at israel's ben gurian airport said we were sent below ground to the shelter. alarms were going off. it turns out hamas for the first time had fired four rockets at the airport. the rockets were intercepted by israel's famous iron dome. at least 24 rockets were fired from gaza today, one hitting that gas station causing that massive fire. one person was seriously injured. also today, another milestone. 100 palestinians have now been killed. martha raddatz, abc news, jerusalem. >> and that situation just continues to escalate. now to the latest on that horrific shooting in texas that

left six dead including four children. we are learning more about the suspected gunman and what may have been his motive. abc's ryan owens is there for us in spring, texas. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, robin. we are learning chilling new details about what happened inside of this home. and the young hero who made sure the bloodshed stopped right here. authorities say six members of this family were executed simply because they wouldn't tell 33-year-old ron haskell where to find his ex-wife. >> tragically unthinkable. i just -- i don't even know if i still believe it. it feels like a bad dream. >> reporter: this morning haskell who led police on a chase. >> white male by the name of ron haskell considered armed and dangerous. >> reporter: ending in a four-hour standoff is charged with capital murder and dressed as a fedex deliveryman when he shot steven and katie stay. his ex melanie is katie stay's

sister and has been living out of state since they divorced on valentine's day. >> ron could instill fear in her. it was a horrific relationship she was going through and she had had enough. >> reporter: haskell had been arrested for assaulting her before and until last year had a protective order against him. >> he had pulled her by her hair and struck her in the head. >> reporter: his own mother got a restraining order against him just last week. only one member of this family survived the rampage, 15-year-old cassidy stay. seen here with her mom in this facebook photo. haskell shot her too but she played dead until he left. then called 911 to tell police he was headed to her maternal grandparents' house to kill them too. officers got there first. her paternal grandparents who live in southern california spoke with cassidy wednesday night. >> i said i was so sorry, cassidy, about everything that's happened but i'm so grateful you're still with us and she

said my mom and dad are in a better place. >> reporter: her paternal grandparents issued a statement calling her a hero and are in awe of her bravery. cassidy was grazed we're told by a bullet in the head and remarkably, robin, she's expected do make a full recovery, the lone survivor. >> we wish her all the absolute best going forward. let's get today's other top stories from dan harris in for amy this week. good morning. >> good morning. good morning, everybody. we start in washington state where evacuations are order the as a wildfire explodes in size. now spreading to more than 28 square miles threatening hundreds of homes and buildings. one forecaster said the hot, dry conditions have turned the land into quote/unquote organic gasoline and look at these pictures flames creeping within a few feet of families' home, a 30-mile stretch of highway also had to be closed. also breaking overnight an american airlines flight from newark to dallas had to make a

landing in st. louis after a passenger made a threat on his phone prompting another passenger to alert the flight crew. the man was questioned and cleared and the plane was grounded for an hour. now to a big lawsuit that could have you checking your credit card statement this morning. amazon is accused of billing customers millions of dollars for purchases made by their kids that they never authorized. my weekend "gma" co-anchor bianna golodryga has details. >> good morning. the issue here is did amazon make it too easy for kids to spend their parents' money without permission. the federal trade commission is saying, yes, and they're suing. thousands of customers complained that while their kids played games or used apps on devices like the kindle fire they spent unlimited amounts of cash on digital extras. for example, kids could buy virtual coins for this game called ice age village but buying these digital extras adds up to big money. they cost anywhere between 99 cents and $99 per piece and sometimes buying them was as easy as closing a pop-up window

camera feeding this bear roaming through a neighborhood in orlando. the same area where a woman was recently attacked by a bear and suffered serious injuries. also in florida, new video overnight of basketball star lebron james landing back in miami joined by fellow free agent dwyane wade. millions of fans are waiting for him to decide whether he's going to stay with the heat or return to cleveland. he's expected to announce his decision before he flies to brazil for sunday's world cup final. finally, if you have ever hesitated to leave your car with a valet at a hotel or a restaurant, please do not watch this. one guy left his white lamborghini at this luxury hotel. the valet simply cannot handle the car's 500-horsepower and slaps directly into a concrete wall. not a big deal. the cost only cost $250,000 and the valley, by the way, is not the only one in trouble. the driver had borrowed the car from one of his friends that night. can you imagine the ensuing

international soccer federation that many say may have more to do with corruption than competition. the heat in brazil led soccer officials for the first time ever to declare water breaks in the middle of the match. >> it could be dangerous. >> reporter: the temperature on this day, 84 degrees. >> this is the rit thing to do. >> reporter: yet incredibly in 2022 the world cup is scheduled to be played where the temperature can be 40 degrees hotter in the arabian desert country of qatar. this is a typical day in qatar, now about 1:00 in the amp and the temperature is just at 124 degrees. this is heatstroke weather. >> soccer federation officials were warned about the potentially dangerous heat in qatar but all was ignored in the final vote which came down to qatar and the united states. >> the winner is qatar. >> reporter: but not long after allegations surfaced that some soccer federation members had been bribed to vote for qatar

with a focus on this prominent billionaire businessman from qatar, mohamed bin hammam. >> no doubt that he's going around with a secret slush fund. >> reporter: a soccer federation vice president from the caribbean was accused of taking more than a million dollars from bin hammam. both have been since kicked out of the soccer federation over other allegations and both deny any wrongdoing. >> i'm telling you again i did not give any cash gift to anybody. >> reporter: so now qatar is proceeding on its plan to hold the world cup with what it says will be new technology to somehow overcome the desert heat. and officials in qatar claim they won the vote square and square but officials confirm to us that the fbi is now investigating and there's a growing call for a new vote on whether the 2022 world cup should be held in one of the hottest places on earth and i can tell you it is hot. >> we saw the thermometer. ginger was impressed. the u.s. could have another chance.

>> a second vote could give the u.s. a chance. >> still want to know what that technology is. >> no one else does either. they're working on it. >> okay, thank you, you two. the case of a wealthy google executive killed by a high class call girl allegedly by a drug overdose. now they're investigating whether she killed another man who died in a strikingly similar fashion. linzie janis has that. >> reporter: investigators on opposite sides of the country are looking into this woman, 26-year-old alix tichelman, searching for evidence that she may have killed not one, but two men with fatal doses of heroin. >> a felony, that's manslaughter. >> reporter: tichelman an alleged call girl is already behind bars facing manslaughter charges in the death of 51-year-old forrest hayes found dead of a heroin overdose. police said they found surveillance footage from his yacht which shows tichelman help

inject himself and he experiences medical complications and passes out on the floor. police say instead of calling 911 tichelman collects her th g things including the heroin and needles. >> she at one point stepped over the body to grab a glass of wine and finished the glass of wine. >> reporter: and now investigators near atlanta are re-examining another case, wondering if tichelman might be responsible for the death of 53-year-old dean riopel who died of an overdose, a deadly mix of heroin, oxycodone and alcohol two months before hayes' death. at the time it was ruled accidental. >> we'll go back and look at it and make sure that everything that we determine to be correct almost a year ago is still factual and still accurate. >> reporter: back in california, tichelman is facing a flurry of charges in addition to manslaughter including destroying evidence. tichelman has not yet entered a

plea. police say that after hayes' death tichelman allegedly did online searches about how to defend herself legally after administering a lethal dose of heroin. >> all right. thank yoyou. george clooney is not backing down against his stand against one of the biggest newspapers in the world. they apologized in very phub fashion and george did not accept. he is hollywood elite. now in a leading role against a british tabloid. this morning george clooney rejecting an apology from "daily mail" after it published what he says is false information about his future in-laws and their religion calling the publication a detriment to its readers. this an op-ed published by "usa today" overnight clooney says "the mail" knew the story in question was false and printed it anyway. what separates this from all of the ridiculous things "the mail"

already been charged with murder and now his wife is preparing for her legal defense even though she has not been charged in her son's death. abc's steve osunsami has the story for us there in atlanta. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. paypal has just come out promising refunds to all those people who donated money to the family's defense and would now like their money returned. ross harris is no longer a web developer for home depot. he was let go thursday. leanna harris seen here returning to her suburban atlanta home thursday. >> we have no comment for you. >> reporter: has not been charged in the heatstroke death of her 22-month-old son cooper but abc news has learned she's now hired a lawyer. new toxicology results show that neither she nor her husband gave their son any drug or medication that would have caused him to fall asleep in the father's backseat on the morning of june 18th. police have charged 33-year-old justin ross harris with murder

and second degree child cruelty. he pleaded not guilty claiming he forgot to drop the boy off at day care and forgot he was in the car. cooper died after more than seven hours still buckled into his car seat on a 90-degree day. at least one eyewitness is speaking out in harris' defense. leonard madden says he looked truly destroyed when he couldn't revive his son. >> his initial reaction was too organic for it to have been planned from what i could see. his cries out of desperation and passion and hurt, they were too heart felt. >> reporter: but police say while his son was dying of heatstroke in the back of this silver suv the very married father was across the parking lot messaging lewd pictures of himself to women. police are now poring over several of harris' social media accounts. prosecutors say he wanted to live a childless life. >> these messages and chats, did they start in the morning? >> they do. >> and continue throughout the

day. >> they do. >> reporter: they re-created the scene measuring temperatures in and out of the vehicle. it was another 90-degree day. harris' lawyers went to meet him in jail thursday. prosecutors are expected to get an indictment handed down before the middle of september. david? >> all right, steve, thanks. that is a tough story every time we hear it. to the dramatic story of survive at sea. she fended for herself 1 hours before being rescued and matt gutman live in miami beach. this was really something. >> reporter: it really is, david. today is a beautiful day off miami beach but imagine being stuck way out there in the middle of the ocean in a storm. the waves crashing over your head at three to five feet. you have no life preserver, food or water. somehow doris managed to survive with the help of a pvc pipe and a plan. doris steed has a simple message

of survival. >> stay calm, stay focused. and, you know, try to figure out a game plan. >> reporter: for 13 hours she was adrift separated from her husband larry while diving for scallops in the gulf of mexico over fourth of july weekend. >> i look around. there's no other boats out there. it's thundering. the skies are dark. >> reporter: hurricane arthur whipping up the seas had pushed the couple's boat about a half mile away. larry chased after it. >> i heard him yell my name and screaming my name then i noticed the boat turn and head off away from me completely gone then left totally alone out there in the water. >> reporter: larry steed told 911 operators he recovered the boat and dora was nowhere to found. >> i went back to where i thought we were and i cannot find her. dora! >> reporter: you can hear his frantic search. >> dora. >> reporter: but dora was gone. >> sky was completely black,

thundering, lightning, waves coming over my head. just pouring in your face and the waves and tide coming against me. >> reporter: search teams were driven back by the chaotic scene. >> that's the worst part was watching them all leave. >> reporter: then her salvation. >> i searched everything and i saw at this point a pvc pipe sticking up out of the water. i put mie legs around the pole and arms around the pole and just hung on to them. >> reporter: as daylight broke dora spotted a search boat. >> i'm determined if i have to walk right up to the boat. >> reporter: dora safe after her battle with the sea. larry relieved after a night of worry and anguish. >> he said, don't ever do that to me again. he's sobbing. i said do it to you. i said, you left me out there and so he was just very upset. >> reporter: a true survivor, dora says she never doubted her fate. >> i never felt alone even though i was totally alone in pitch black sitting out there in the middle of a storm but i never felt alone.

>> reporter: now, dora was so resourceful she actually used that storm to her benefit. she was worried about being dehydrated so she turned her mask upside down and used it as a cup and got rainwater and drank to avoid being dehydrated. she wants to go back in the water and scallop yet again. her husband larry not so keen on the idea. >> how about that, collect the rainwater in her goggles. >> and pvc pipe which only ginger knew what it was hanging out at the home depot again. >> grew up on a form and made ladder golf out of pvc pipe. it's embarrassing. but i did want to talk about an active pattern we're about to get into and we've had a wavy jet stream. almost 5,000 miles away remnants of that typhoon will affect your weather. you'll see a little extra ridging and troughing. that means nothing to you except by next week warmth and heat in the pacific northwest and diving cold into the great lakes,
