after egypt proposed a cease-fire to end the latest round of vice. >> the two sides have met separately overnight and are reacting this morning. we have live team coverage this morning. we begin with abc's hamish macdonald in tel aviv. that's the latest there. >> reporter: good morning to you. well, the situation is pretty murky but the events are fast-moving. as you mentioned, egypt has put forward this proposal for a cease-fire. the israeli cabinet has met within the last few hours and they said they accept that cease-fire, they've instructed their military to stop its raids over gaza. however, hamas initially the military wing said that it had not been consulted and did not accept this then hamas political spokesman have said also they do not accept this proposal for a cease-fire. it seems that the egyptians and the israelis have done this without including the hamas leadership. there's some reporting

suggesting that the fatah leadership mahmoud abbas were involved but they have a unit government, they say and a real test. we'll need to watch over the coming hours to see whether it can hold. >> thanks so much, hamish. overnight president obama reacted to the growing violence in the region and the idea of a truce. >> abc's tahman bradley has more on that. >> reporter: speaking overnight at a dinner celebrating ramadan president obama welcomed cease-fire talks. >> i believe further escalation benefits no one, least of all the israeli and the palestinian people. >> reporter: over the past week at least 185 people have been killed. israel has been targeting havmz' stockpile of rockets. hamas fired back launching hundreds of missiles. yesterday a hamas drone like this one launched into israeli airspace was shot down. many in the region are worried this could escalate into a full-scale war.

30,000 israeli reservists have already been called up. in the west bank, hundreds of demonstrators marched to protest israel's campaign. >> we are here to protest against the massacres that are conducted by israel against the palestinian civilian population of gaza. >> reporter: with the death toll the international community will continue pushing hard but we hear secretary of state john kerry will not travel to the middle east to see if he could permanently make a difference. he had been considering a trip. >> tahman bradley live in washington. thank you, tahman. much more from the middle east on "gma" but our other big story. another wild of wild weather from coast to coast. >> several long lines of strong storms moving if east to west and everywhere in between. >> these systems spawned everything from damaging hail, severe flooding, even possible tornadoes. violent storms pummeled the northeast and an ominous cloud in south jersey.

>> looks like we got the worth of it. it uprooted trees and smashing a hole in a home. >> like nothing i've heard. sounded like a tornado. really crazy fast winds, very loud. >> the same system producing dangerous conditions in nearby philadelphia. this morning a fire that destroyed a city home is being blamed on a lightning strike. >> i heard a big crash like a crash, you know, and there was sparks flying all over. >> dark clouds also rolled in over washington. the capital barely visible in the afternoon skyline. a huge lightning bolt making a direct hit on the library of congress just behind it. the heavy rain and winds caught people off guard in arlington, virginia. >> out here today. all of a sudden it was nice, sunny, next thing you know raining cats and dogs. >> that storm was crazy. i'm literally was like i wasn't expecting it to be so powerful. monsoon storms hit that area

and it caused several motorists to be rescued by the fire department. >> wow. it's loud. >> reporter: it turned into hail in colorado, the result of polar air pushing its way through hot summer skies and major league baseball forced to delay the start of the home run derby because of rain in the twin cities where it's unseasonably cool in the mid-50s. well, more on today's stormy weather and that chilly air gripping the nation's midsection. >> accuweather meteorologist jim dickey tracking it all. good morning. >> good morning, reena and devin. keeping it unseasonly cool in the midsection today. early morning low temperatures. many spots challenging record lows into the mid to low 50s. 40s for bismarck and pierre and 54 in chicago. a good 10 to 20 degrees below average across the board on the fringes of that colder air mass seeing heavy thunderstorms once again. watching the i-95 corridor. storms will bring gusty winds.

closure of a 23r50eway in los angeles overnight. you can see police cars driving very slowly there as officers search on foot for shell casings and other evidence. gunfire erupted near the 91 freeway in anaheim in what police may have been a shooting between a truck and a car. just hours before today's all-star game major league baseball is taking steps to welcome gay programs and it will try to combat home foe phobia with the family of a gay player who quit 30 years ago. glen burke said it was too difficult to hide his sexuality. tracy morgan is getting up and about again after being critically injured in that accident. a video caught him moving slowly there using a walker but then he flashes a peace sign. he also has a few words as he passes by. >> you look great, man.

well, the bull is running on wall street again. the dow again opens above 17,000 this morning with markets shaking off the worst week in three months. investors were encouraged by some major deals and better than expected earnings from citigroup despite that $7 billion settlement over toxic mortgage securities. volkswagen is picking ch chattanooga for its new suv. the crossover will mean,000 more jobs at the tennessee plant which voeptsly voted against unionization. volkswagen brings its pasaat at the factory aimed at the north american market arriving in 2016. they're not saying what the new model will be called. apple may have another hit. a morgan stanley analyst expects them to sell 30 to 60 million of the iwatch in the first year at $300 a pop. apple hasn't officially said

many with no umbrella getting drenched. storms are making for quite a slick commute across much of the east coast and wet across the south and into east texas. flooded roads in the southwest, windy condition, though and slippery highways from wyoming to colorado. flying, airport delays are possible in new york, philadelphia, washington, d.c., charlotte, denver and phoenix. well, a man who was trapped inside a chicago jail for 30 hours has filed a lawsuit. >> he went to visit his son but apparently went through the wrong door and sook a seat in a visiting room being renovated and the steel doors closed behind him. he banged on the door and screamed but no one heard his cries for help. the ordeal took an emotional toll. >> he's having some difficulties. some emotional concerns. >> really just hurt me and saddened me that fee myself permanently wasn't emotionally strong enough. >> polk was trapped without any

food, water or bathroom. he broke a sprinkle ler forcing guards and firefighters to check the room. a group of bystanders stepped in to stop a woman and young girl from being carjacked caught on tape. 21-year-old man jumped in the car and tried to drive off but he crashed instead. that's when a group of men grabbed the would-be carjacker and held him even using their fists until police got there. in michigan a clerk at a gas station sent a thief running for his life. a surveillance camera caught the armed robber wearing a ski mask and making the clerk empty the register but when he forces him into the back room the clerk pulled out a revolver and starts firing. ten shots in all. the thief runs bumping into things finally jumped into a getaway car. meanwhile, police in miami investigating this embarrassing incident when two of its officers got into a fistfight in the middle of a busy street. the struggle started as a routine traffic stop recorded on

>> in all the second year m.i.t. student flew 29,000 miles. we get the story from jennifer jensen of our station in san diego. >> reporter: taxiing probably never felt so good to 19-year-old matt gutmiller after this final leg of his flight, 15 hours plus, solo across the pacific ocean. the new record-setting around the world solo pilot because of his age was clearly exhausted as he was greeted by hugs by his mom. >> i guess it's good to be back. >> reporter: back after flying solo for more than 29,000 miles in a plane specially outkilled from the high performance aircraft. >> we think it's one of many very incredible things that he's going to do in his lifetime. >> reporter: as we first reported guthmiller left behind his 1981 beechcraft bonanza. his goal returning here before july 26th.
