having coffee. ohh. ♪ is folgers in your cup >> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> good morning. meteorologist, david murphy. on this tuesday july 15th. here's what's happening. >> powerful lightning, flash flooding and a possible tornado tear across the delaware valley. we'll have a live look at some of the hardest hit areas. >> we're not out of the woods yet. accuweather is tracking the risk of more thunderstorms and drenching downpours again today. >> brand new at 6:00 a demolition derby in berks county takes a terrifying turn. an arena owners makes plans to preventer anything like this from happening again. >> good morning. let's talk about the accuweather forecast and go over to karen rogers much she's in for david murphy and

matt pelman is looking at your traffic. good morning. >> good morning. as soon as you step outside you can just feel the moisture in the atmosphere. we have a lot of low clouds reducing visibility in some spots so be careful as you're headed outer but the big issue today is the flash flood concerns. i want you to look at this. the national weather service has continued that flash flood watch through tomorrow morning because of these downpours. we could see 1 to 3 inches of rain with some of these storms that move through today. now satellite 6 and action radar showing we have mostly cloudy skies at this point and just a you believe can of light sprinkles coming through in one or two spots in our area. that's not a big deal just yet. the majority of the activity is going the happen late this afternoon into the evening hours. right now that temperature 75 in philadelphia, warm and muggy, 72 in allentown, 75 in wilmington, 74 in millville and even along the boardwalk in ac we're in the upper 60's at this point. let's help you plan this day ahead. at any point you want to watch for a shower or a thunderstorm popping up. so by 9:00 a.m., 78, mostly

cloudy. by noon, 83. by 3:00 p.m., 87. at any point during those hours we could see a quick shower or thunderstorm but the more organized activity happens late in the afternoon into the early nighttime hours so by 6:00 p.m. you'll be right in it with some showers and thunderstorms really producing heavy downpours. our high today 87 degrees. we once again have a chance for severe weather. we're going to talk more about that coming up in the exclusive accuweather 7-day in just a couple minutes, matt. >> all righty, karen, a bit of a wild ride on the weather front these days. the traffic ride into work this morning doesn't look too bad so far unless you're this poor guy who blew a tire on 95 southbound here approaching bridge street. the air bags went off when the tire blew so everything is off to the side now. police are helping him out. but as we've been traveling southbound away from cottman through this point near bridge street things have been a little bit slow because people have been slowing down to see what's going on. elsewhere on the big picture still pretty good over on the schuylkill expressway. a lot of the roads are drying

out this morning. we had an underground transformer fire in center city. the action camry mains on the scene along 18 street right by with the house square. all lanes of 18th remain shut down between the square at walnut street and chestnut street by the continental midtown. stay over on 16th or maybe 20th one of the other numbered streets neff 18th this morning. back out to the maps watching some storm damage like a downed tree here in the weather chester area along phoenixville pike along 322. if you're wondering what things are looking like right about there let's show you. this is 202 by westtown road. we've seen some sprinkles out here. traffic getting by in both directions just fine. one more downed tree in hamilton township along route 50 near oak street. tam. >> thank you matt. the national weather service will be assessing the damage in burlington county, new jersey, this morning. they're trying to determine if a tornado did indeed touchdown. to a big pine tree that uprootd in somebody's lawn. more branches in the street and right across the road yet another tree was uprooted and is now lying across another family's lawn here in voorhees inform burlington county the national weather service will be investigating to see if it was a tornado that blew from mount laurel northeast ward towards pemberton. signs of rotation on the radar indicate a possible tornado in central burlington county between 8:20 and 8:45 p.m. in tabernacle a viewer snapped this photograph over the holy eucharist church. in camden county this morning the cleanup is under way in voorhees. >> every street was blocked with trees. have to go all the way around to get to my house. >> reporter: trees uprooted, power lines down. bill and his family were inside their home on pelham road when he heard a loud noise. this tree in his yard crashed onto his home smashing a hole into the side of his second floor. >> i have like -- like nothing

i've never really heard. sounded like a tornado, just really crazy fast winds, very loud. >> reporter: and back here live in voorhees on pelham road by saddle ridge road you can see the branches are lining the street, debris from that storm yesterday. these branches got torn down. some of the families here are still anxiously awaiting power. we have seen crews out and about, restoration crews working on this block but obviously there's still a lot of cleanup left to do. live in voorhees, katherine scott channel 6 "action news." >> hundreds of lightning bolts that struck our area last night. one bolt lit a house in the fox chase section of philadelphia around 9 o'clock last night. the action cam was there on the scene in the 400 block of chandler street. the woman who owned the house had in fact just sold it just few hours before that storm moved in. the three bedroom home suffered extensive damage. there were no injuries. thankfully the home was vacant. you can follow the storms as they rumble through from

"action news" reporter erin o'hearn is live at the big board with the full story. >> a frightening and gruesome discovery yesterday by a man who police say was picking through the trash near a vacant home on north third street in kensington. investigators say among the garbage he found a duffle bag. inside it was a body of a hispanic woman police believe was about 23 years old. her arms were bound with duct tape and this happened around 5:00 a.m. yesterday morning. about two hours earlier, homicide detectives say a car was found torched on the 1600 block of bambrey in south philadelphia behind some homes an warehouse. police are trying to determine if that car belonged to the

woman. neighbors are understandably on edge as they wait to get more answers about who this woman was and why she fell victim to such a horrendous crime. >> i'm terrified. like i love to walk, get out, walk my dogs and all. it's scary this world. what is the world coming to? >> we want to make sure what's going on. mon nestly we don't know. we nervous. our community is nervous. >> investigators believe they know the identity of the woman but they are waiting to get in touch with relatives the confirm the identification. the results of the autopsy could be released as early as today. matt. >> all right, thank you erin. new on "action news" here an ar thirteen in berks county is making safety changes after an accident during a demolition derby. a woman in the stands at mountain springs posted this video on youtube. a juvenile driver careened out of control on saturday and ran over his own father. several other people suffered scrapes and bruises. the boy's father has a broken ankle. the own are of the arena says

he plans on closing off an opening at the entrance and prohibiting parents from the demo pit during youth competitions. >> it is 6:08 and worrisome news this morning for community college students who need if this help to stay in school. maribel aber is live in new york city. she's got more details. good morning, maribel. >> reporter: hey, good morning, tam. almost a million community college students don't have access to federal student loans simply because their schools don't offer them. now, most states colleges participate in the programs on a school by school basis. the main concern of some schools that don't offer the loans did he have fault. all this according to report from the institute for college access and success. okay, microsoft is planning its biggest round of job cuts in five years. this is according to bloomberg news. the number of job reductions could top the 5,800 mark that were slashed in 2009. microsoft is trying to slim down. talking stocks, stock rose

thanks to a stronger than expected earnings recorder from city group. the dow rose 111 points to close back above 17,000. right now futures are pointing to a lower open. that's the late of the in business news from new york. back over to you, matt and tam. >> maribel have a great day. thanks so much. up in new york city probably getting some storms later today like we plan to. >> this front will sweep through. a lot of areas in the northeast are going to get that and we once again have the chance for severe weather, too. let's go right to storm tracker 6 live double scan. on a day like this you're grateful to have a live radar, one of the only in the area to show you exactly what's happening and you can see it's pretty quiet out there right now, nothing more than a couple of light sprinkles but we'll show you where they are with our street level view. right on 422 near pottstown as well as norristown and malvern. a couple of sprinkles making their way around philadelphia. it's not a big deal just yet. the real activity is the threatening weather that comes late today into the evening hours. let's go on outside right now and show you what it looks like as we're headed out. you see the low clouds. we've got visibility reducing

to about a half mile at philadelphia international airport. as you look in center city you kind of get that idea with the low clouds in place. 75 degrees the current temperature. it is warm, it is muggy already. 72 in allentown. 72 degrees in millville. it's going to be a warm and humid day today. we have the slight risk for severe weather. so, the storm prediction center in norman, oklahoma, they decided what areas have that slight risk and they said our entire viewing area could see the severe weather with the gusty winds, the downpours, the lightning so it's a repeat performance of yesterday and the timing is now looking similar to yesterday, too. so satellite 6 and action radar showing we've got lots of clouds in place, we'll see some holes here or there and we're seeing just some showers trying to pop up. not any big thunderstorms just yet. that's going to lap later on today and with future tracker 6 we can show you what it's going to look like later. this is a look at 4:30 and this updates all the time. so last night you might have seen it look like the storms would hit a little earlier. now this latest view showing at 4:30 that's when you really

see the line start to begin to form and then at 7:30 you're getting these threatening storms with the downpours, denching downpours and heavy conditions here and we look at 9:30 and it kind of breaks up and moves apart. however tomorrow morning it looks like we get another line of some heavy rain or showers in spots through part of your morning rush into the early hours of wednesday morning. so, watching that really closelily. we're not done with it just today. let's look at the day ahead. by 8:00 a.m., 77. by 11, 82. and by 2:00 p.m. 85. it's warm and muggy. you've got mostly cloudy skies, some breaks of sun. at any point during this time you could see a quick shower or a thunderstorm but the more organized activity, the really threatening weather comes late in the afternoon into the evening and nighttime hours, 86 by 5:00 p.m. with those thunderstorms around. your high of 87. if you're at the shore today you have to be careful. i wouldn't say don't go but keep a close eye on the skies and certainly have that storm tracker 6 app in your hand. so heavy thunderstorms possible especially late in

>> little bit hazy out here in bucks county this morning, tam, but at least the traffic is moving well along 95. headlights headed northbound towards the scudder falls bridge. we have some showers out there and some downed trees and wires from the last round of storms. we'll watch the header and the traffic when "action news" continues

philadelphia international airport and you just see from side to side nothing but gray skies up there today and that will continue through most of the day. >> matt, karen lab talking about some low visibility in some places out there. >> absolutely. she's been talking about the sprinkles that we've been seeing as well and we've been seeing them right here in malvern chester county along 202 right in the work zone as some of the cars have been passing heading southbound here passing 29 down towards 401. i've been seeing the wipers going but probably just the intermittent. probably not full blast this morning on the wipers through this area but some sprinkles nonetheless. luckily we're not seeing the standing water we saw during the storms last night where it really came down. at least at my house it was strong rain. get used to this new traffic pattern that debuted over the week. the ramp from 202 southbound to 29 southbound reopened over the weekend so go ahead enjoy that ramp once again. meanwhile elsewhere in chester county we're dealing with a downed tree this morning along phoenixville pike near 322.

you might want to use 202 to get around it or even pottstown pike instead of phoenixville pike. that could be a better bet. in glad win still have some downed wires blocking lafayette road near stony lane. young ford road gets you around that storm damage. construction coming to south gulph road in let me today. at valley view road upper merion rather. going to be restrictioning that from 9:00 until 3:00. stick to church road or the schuylkill expressway during the midday hours. on the big picture no delays this morning so far this morning on the schuylkill. broken down vehicle on 95 southbound approaching bridge street but that's off to the side. don't forget at the ben franklin bridge three lanes coming into the city this morning so that could cause delays and our problems that we had near rittenhouse with the underground transformer fire they're wrapping up. peco getting ready to leave the scene 018th street is in the process of reopening right now. tam. >> okay, thank you, matt. new at 6:00 a.m., thieves in the lehigh valley are targeting travelers. upper macungie police are investigating five car

difficult because the russian train station is 275 feet underground. >> the emergency board ordered by president obama to resolve the septa labor dispute is out with its finding. the board recommends higher wages. septa says the regional rails locomotive engineers and electrical workers would get a 11.5 percent raise over the five year contract and a $1,250 signing bonus. however, the board does not recommend the unions receive retroactive pay. the recommendations are not binding so it will be up to septa and the two unions to negotiate a final settlement or another strike could still be possible. >> 6:00 a.m. 27 now. karen rogers is updating the path and timing of more storms heading to the region. >> and breaking overnight mixed signals from hamas. what the palestinian group has ceasefire in gaza. more when "actio

a concern we could get 2-inches of rain in less than an hour. this is possible along streams, creeks and streets and it only takes about 6-inches of moving water completely knock you over. so you really have to take this flash flooding threat seriously as we look at satellite 6 and action radar nothing more than a osama bin laden couple sprinkles popping up near reading pottstown and doylestown. this isn't a big deal yet. this ignites the atmosphere late this afternoon into this evening. that's when the storms come through. 75 degrees in philadelphia, warm and muggy and we're headed up to its a warm and humid day with mostly cloudy skies. by 9:00 a.m., 78. by noon, 83. by 3:00 p.m., 87. that's our high and at any point in the morning or afternoon we could see a shower or a thunderstorm but the gusty thunderstorms happen late in the day into the evening hours so by 6:00 p.m. it will be 86 degrees with thunderstorms moving through the area. we'll talk about when they finally exit the area and what comes next in that seven-day forecast, matt. >> and that's coming up in just a minute.

>> ooh, it sounds -- there we go. sounds like the afternoon commute could be interesting. once again this morning, karen rogers, the morning commute, though, not looking too badly. as we look live here at i-95 by cottman avenue right in the work zone we had that vehicle that blew the tire and air bags deployed as well. that's out of the way now. all southbound lanes opened but definitely crowded as you come away from academy through this point at cottman. breaks up just a bit and then you're on the brakes again from past the betsy ross bridge into girard. speaking of bridges on the ben franklin bridge only three westbound lanes are available again this morning coming into the city. that could spell delays for you as the morning progresses. and they're still cleaning up some storm damage like here in lower merion, downed wires are blocking lafayette road, youngford road a possible alternate. downed tree in the west chester area along phoenixville pike along 322. maybe use pottstown pike or 202 as some alternates. in gilbertsville a vehicle has

"action news" reporter katherine scott is lie in voorhees with a look at the damage there. katherine. >> reporter: matt, the storms just slammed this neighborhood. there's debris ever everywhere barges spine cones. several trees at this intersection have been cracked and uprooted. one of them is right behind me. you can see this one has uprooted right at the base, it's stretched across the's yard. they've stretched a tarp across the hole that the tree left in the home but more cleanup left to do here and across our area after those fierce storms last night. >> it was really strong. like the house started shaking. >> reporter: storms were strong and this is what they left behind in voorhees, trees

saying maybe more in the afternoon. now we're looking at 5 o'clock in the evening, it looks like that's when the storms begin to take shape, maybe four, 5 o'clock we begin the see them out towards the west and cross through the area the 8 o'clock and look at this. we're seeing areas of purple and dark red just giving you an idea of how heavy it could rain with any one of these storm. then we watch that storm system move out of there and even through the nighttime hours maybe a shower it looks like tomorrow morning we could even be left with another line of showers or even some downpours at times. that's a look at 9:00 a.m. on wednesday morning. we have the slight risk for severe weather once again today. we could see gusty winds, lightning and downpours at any part of the region so watching the weather so closely today. a high of 87. it's warm, it's horribly humid out there with showers and thunderstorms at any point but most especially late in the day. so, by 8:00 a.m., 77, maybe you're getting a sprinkle around. by 11:00 a.m., 82, could be a shower in one or two places, same situation as 2:00 p.m., 85 degrees but it's late in
