11:30 am
and g. terri madonna and jeff jubelirer communications executive. >> hey, matt. >> good to have all of you here. let's talk about atlantic city. may lose yet another casino. owners of trump plaza announced this week it ambulanceed to close in september with 1,000 people losing jobs and it would be in fourth casino to close in atlantic city just this year. new mayor don guardian lament this is what is needed as ac tries to reinvent itself as a destination. jeff, you're someone that takes something not so shiny and makes it shiny right? let me ask the following question. what can atlantic city become? what should it become? and what will it become? >> oh, >> where do i start. >> not necessarily in that order. >> it should -- it has to down size a little in the sense that the cream is rising to the top. you have pennsylvania, you have
11:31 am
41 states in addition to new jersey -- in total, that have gaming. you have internet gaming now. which is taking revenue as way. and you're cannibalizing the product. you have to figure out what do we have in atlantic city that is working? what other attractions do we have? and i believe, with a do a.c. campaign with the mayor out, there they're trying their best to do that. now they're talking about referendum in new jersey, possibly 2015 which will add casinos in northern new jersey. >> and governor christie supports this. >> why. >> why are you trying to knock atlantic city off the man? that's not the answer. >> problem more important question is how do you fix atlantic city? gaming over the last 25 years has not fixed atlantic city. poverty -- most people come into the city for the jobs. impact of closing casinos will affect places outside of atlantic city. poverty is high. and the mayor is attempting to figure out how do i fix the problem in atlantic city as we
11:32 am
redefine the city how do we create more jobs for people that live here? how do we improve the education system in atlantic city? that's what games was supposed to do. it has not done it. >> anyone have any ideas. >> they have to do better with -- first of all they need to look at boardwalk and just clean it up. that's number one. number two, they really need to get like brigatta they do more entertainment and doing more family things that makes sense. not just the gaming mees. revenue is going down for gaming and going up with other things with entertainment and having stars come out. those types of things. they have to get more involved in those things and more family orientsd wasn't that the idea of the revel. >> beyonce opening up. >> i don't think it worked. >> new why casino, no smoking, entertainment. >> and no people. no people are coming. >> the bigger problems goes to the heart of what my colleague said here and what everybody has been saying. lack of diversification of economy in the city and the fact
11:33 am
it's not destination for families anymore. they're going to you know cape may, avalon, you can go through right from new york to down to cape may. the fact of the matter is that atlantic city is no longer afamily destination. and unless they -- it's beyond what a mayor can do. the problem transsends what an individual, chief executive of a city can do. it's now a much bigger task and much bigger problem that will take a concerted effort and. >> state? >> and the competition -- look, in pennsylvania, gaming revenues are now down. right? 2.6% in our state and pennsylvania is talking about on-line gaming. they don't call it internet gaming. i don't know why. they call it on-line -- i'm joking. on-line gaming in new jersey. on-line gaming as i understand it is just for new jerseyites. still defraction traction and
11:34 am
takes money away. how much we don't know and they don't say but ultimately gaming is not answer to healthy economy. >> here's what i can't figure out, if -- let's put it this way. you have a city in the middle of a sderlt and you have a city on the beach. and both have gaming. which one will you put your money on? the city next to the beach. because it has asset. city in the dessert is in a dessert. how does las vegas become so successful or atlantic city has got tone thint positive. >>? >> they went through the crisis they redefined themself a take aid or 15 years ago to destination. now you take your family to las vegas. and they have better weather. >> little bit. >> family entertainment. golf resorts. he's exactly right. it's just not go through for big couple of nights spend money on tables and get out. it's now a family destination site and that's been part of
11:35 am
their success. >> i said that earlier. >> vegas and jersey for years and years and years. and that will never be turned back. >> but also you have to look at the community around atlantic city. people forget about that. nobody is dealing with that community. >> they would agree with that assessment. >> and when you go through people don't want to go through looking at all these negative things. it's just bad. it's just bad. it's dirty. it's like people don't clean it up looks like people don't care about them. what is that saying?have teosest has to be about everything. it takes a whole team for pull it altogether. >> all you need is the money to execute. >> madonna has it -- >> for college. >> i meant jeff jubelirer. >> here in clinton -- mayor nutter philadelphia mayor is he too honest? it seems like absolutely ludicrous question but
11:36 am
politico.com asked that question. has mayor nutter open a push for emics reform, been unable to achieve main political goals because he's honest and lacks zest for that philadelphia style deal-making. let me read you a quote if her article. many of nutter's defeats, however, have been aribt trikted to his own personality traits in particular apparent taste for smoozing and deal making and makes some wonder is it possible for philadelphia government to be honest and effective, george? >> i think the answer so that is yes. people seem to suggest that honesty precludes ability to do effective deal making and politics. politics is about the process of give and take between legislative folks that get elected on shorter term cycle and mayors come in vision on later term policy they will be there for a long period of time. i don't think the mayor has been
11:37 am
honest. the mayor has not been consistently committed to be a politician and you cannot govern a city or state unless you can significantly influence the politics and ed rendell was master of. it he had ability to build relationship with add sayrey. someone he ran against. he built a relationship not say friendship political relationship and he controlled resources to be able to impact the politics around it. >> he put it another way i know this but he basically said he did a lot of back scratching. >> but he -- >> but he also did deals to get things done. he would craft a deal that worked for everybody. >> why doesn't -- if mayor nuter is not that way why he is not. >> he doesn't have the same personal tixt it depends who you are. where are you. where you want to go. he's not ed rendell. you know, you got to get out and shake hands and you have to smooz. back scratch, whatever george said. you have to do what it takes and know hoy to strategically make it work and then have the right people around you.
11:38 am
that's all i'm saying. >> he was not brought into office with a coalition a natural philadelphia if you will coalition. union support, or pro aggressive -- pro aggressive support but amall ga maition of different factions if you will of the philadelphia democratic con stillencey and he didn't "owe" "owe" anybody anything." i'm not saying that's bad nor good. i'm saying he came in and therefore, to his detriment i believe in some ways didn't have the relationships to bank on when trying owe effect uate policy. >> you have to have somebody to have your back in politics. >> let me read off names here terry, corey kemp, rick mariano, vince fumo, john prezel all philadelphia officials all got in the into trouble if his legacy was honest isn't that enough. >> you have to be effective and have to deliver and have to
11:39 am
fulfill your cam pain promises and have to build. i mean ultimately, he'll be judged on success of the city. if at the end of this ten tour the city is perceived as doing well if there's jobs being created and if urban structure is enhanced or we have recreation historical and all things that matt to folks working then he's going to get high applauded, 30, 40 years from now by historians. good goals, good ideas. in and of themselves are not enough in politics. >> this is a city that has been mringed to the point you don't worry about bankruptcy. this is a place where crime has gone down. why don't people talk about that with mayor nutter. homicide rate is significantly lower. >> we recovered from bankruptcy sixt we never know when ed rendell became mayor we created pica to avoid ultimate brupcy and pica is still around and serious economic concerns the
11:40 am
challenge fort mayor is having governed in difficult economic times when you have to have a coalition to make progress. everybody is trying to figure it out. and everybody is protecting territory. i agree with terri that he will get judged historically about how the city is today what he hands the baton to whoever succeeds him. >> absolutely. >> let's talk about someone who may hope to be holding that baton when it is passed another ad in the ring for philadelphia mayor in 20 15 election coming up ken trujillo once served as city solicitor formed a lite litership commit toe to run a campaign. it doesn't exist but he says he would like to run z he have a chance against darrell clarke, james kenny, what do you think, renee? >> everybody has a chance. let me say that. anybody can do that.
11:41 am
there's so many people that want to be mayor when you grow up. i don't know why. but absolutely he has a chance. he has a chance to do it lake everybody else. he is bilingual that bringsing is something to the table. his community will buy into. it i think for anybody out there to get it it depends what are goals and objectives how do they make it better. people want to hear those types of things. let's see what he has to say. i'm ot on his leadership community. >> the latino community could be powerful in the election with a latino candidate. >> absolute lie, absolutely, absolutely. >> it all comes down to what is the field. you have split votes. and what is voting percentage and only real election for the most part and what is the turnout going to be. all those factors. but if you have -- you have to look at not only ethnicity but race. and what coalition that and allen buck covisits comes in and senator anthony williams that we
11:42 am
believe to be in and front runners and if darrell clarke runs. when you enter in and other folks come in they take votes away from others and there may be a opportunity for ken trujillo. >> it's not about resume. if you look at the resume it's impressive. but elections are not about resumes they're about coalition and deal-making and in this city, someone polled going back to ed rendell second meryl victory it's basically coalitions, money, wheeling and dealing and don't forget the unions in democratic primary. >> i think that ken, who i work with in the street administration, one first has to consolidate base in latino community. with which is not in and of itself natural thing to do. in the end what terri said it right. in the end, anybody going to be mayor of the the city of philadelphia needs to figure out how to penetrate the
11:43 am
african-american vote. it's the largest block of votes in the city. if you have credible candidatesn clark running it's hard to figure out how that happened and as terri will tell you ultimately, it's about all the coalitions and everything and sooner or later election the vote breaks and it typically breaks to a can daylight. and so if you have council president clark and senator williams in that election it will be hard to figure out. there's apathy in the voting base now everybody knows what the turn out may not be what it is you have to figure out how to break that voting block and it's not easy to do. >> rendell, which he ran for mayor. the black vet waswas good. >> i know a little bit about that. >> yeah. >> and -- >> you do? >> really? >> i think that that ed rendell, was exception in a time block where everybody thought that ron castillo was probably going to
11:44 am
be mayor of the city of philadelphia. as you remember -- >> then a lot of things happened. >> mayor rendell lost to mayor good and lost to casey and had to come up to losing elections and nobody thought he would be mayor in 1991 but then sam katz got into the race and passed away. >> turned out well for city. >> but it was a unforeseen. >> reps hope mitt romney is new ed rendell. you keep lotsing and they been bam you're there. >> you didn't have to go

>> hopefully you're watching abc this week just brought you up to date on airline crash in ukraine. president obama was in delaware hours after we learned malaysian flight was shot down. he was there to talk about the 495 bridge closed. he made a statement for the first time about the crash there in wilmington, delaware. so, there are so many things going on with this in particular u.s. russian relations which have been strained to say the least. over many years now. do you believe president obama has been strong enough in his relationship with russia and with in particular vladimir putin? silence? >> that's how we're feeling.
11:48 am
>> i don't think so my personal opinion i don't think we have a relationship. i'm not sure he knows how to do that or if the people around him understand how to do that. >> i think we are -- it is more a question of do we have an effective working relationship with our allis. the united states has to be the leader and president has to do certain things. and unless the allis rally to that position it's hard to achieve much. and i think that the president has probably in the same way that he has done national politics done international politics on the same way and perhaps built the strongest personal relationships that you can have which are necessary in thee these places and also for the president in a time when the world is being redefined. and i mean china is emerging as international power almost way force, military force or economic force and it's redefining environment that is
11:49 am
really hard to figure out how to get wins. and we have had had wins in the short run. >> there's not any down side for the first several years of administration and polls president scored well in handling of foreign policy. that is now reversed itself dramatically as a result of events not just in ukraine, but in iraq. and first of all, earlier in syria and iran, and george is right. on the other hand, europe has always been in recent decades a reluctant alli whenever it has gotten to active roles, of a real presence. that's where you need precedential leadership and a personal relationship with leaders and it's very tough, europe, after the post world war ii era is not the same europe today. it's different. it's up to the president to lead. and final point on that, we get to instant judgments of what is
11:50 am
going on in ukraine. we need to be careful about that. it may take a long time, if ever, for us to know exactly what happened before we -- with any president or any group ever advisors to president ought to be telling a president what he ought to do. >> what do you think, jeff? >> i agree with all the above and i'm thinking as my colleagues are speaking what is going on in germany for example another ally they kicked out our cia representative for allegedly spying. an all eye we have a tenuous relationship with and we think about wh middle east and again not making instant judgment but i believe, and terri would have to confirm tell me i'm wrong there's a sense he's not being enough, not riink tnk relates positiont to -- israeli -- >> i don'think it helps that optics about just doing pty fundrseers it's impta for the president to do fundraiseers
11:51 am
while this is going on the icopts of that is not good and i don't think it's hpful. %e and i at's from 54% when ele and he had tough problems there's no doubt about it. that drop is not good for the next couple years you know even if he's going to have any successes given gridlock. >> and i don't think we -- the one thing out there that is problematic in the dub the whole thing with terrorism. what leads to spying if it's going on in germ next you don't know where it all gets grounded. and i think that's a consuming thing fort federal government in washington d.c. i think what it president clearly wants to avoid before going out of office you don't have another terrorist attack on americans. >> politically uncorrected. ready terri. corbett last stand. terri madonna's periodic column

has a chase about the state budget bill. sign is and use veto line item to strike down good why and pet projects. has tarred to see what he did with 2014-15 budget is anything but deviceive last gas effort to change perceptions of leadership can he change battle with laej late tour and can he -- probably not. maybe tom wolf should he win i'm not predicting that it may found out how difficult it is. corbett knees needs a narrative change. if it's just about funding education he losses. actually the best thing you can do now is take pension reform, 49 billion in debt, gone to 60 billion. school districts, 20% of budget, 20% going to pension he said if we do pension reform not only will we have fewer property tax hikes but schools will have more money to put into the classrooms for the kids. he's linking pensions to

education. >> you buy that george. >> i think the argument is right. but terri -- when you have to define your methods in that term it's complicated. >> when you're 20 points behind you don't have a lot of -- >> it was the best of the worst options he had. and the other thing is this is important he has to demonstrate leadership. his own party leaders in the laenl late tour said he has not led us. what does he want to do. he wants to lead say i'm taking on people and that's
