>> gunfire erupts in medical building and a hospital worker is dead and psychiatric patient is in custody amid all this an armed doctor may have saved the day. all this as investigators try to diagnose what sparked today's deadly violence. thursday night, jim is off. i'm monica malpass, the big story on "action news" is deadly shooting at mercy fitzgerald hospital and we've learned more about the fire fight including names of all people involved. in the immediate aftermath this is how it looked as an ambulance pulled up to the hospital of the university of pennsylvania. both doctor and suspect exchanged fire with were taken there for treatment. as for original scene in the 1500 block of lansdowne avenue darby, delaware county and the shooting did not take place in mercy fitzgerald hospital building itself but third floor of doctor's offices across the street. and in what is known as wellness center.

that is where "action news" reporter chad pradelli is live tonight and dann cuellar leads to coverage about the doctor and alleged gunman. let's start with chad at the scene of the shooting, chad. >> reporter: monica the afternoon calm was interrupted by gunfire here and authorities say the gunman rich order plots is mentally troubled man that came here to harm. and the question is why. >> it was just after 2 p.m. when investigators say a mentally troubled richard the plotts walked into the psychiatric unit. plotts's caseworker theresa hunt and lee silverman were in an office when an argument erupted. >> a worker con firmd he heard loud arguing going on. they came in and they actually opened the door and saw him pointing a gun at the doctor. >> worker shut the door and call police. seconds later, there was gunfire. detectives believed plotts shot

dr. silberman very man in the head it was a grays wound and the doctor pulled his own gunfireing several times hitting plotts in the torso twice and once in the arm. when the gunfire was over, theresa hunt was dead and plotts was critically injured. and investigators are still trying to determine who shot the caseworker. >> this could be a much different situation if the perpetrator was allowed to continue with his actions. so i give credit to the staff for intervening. >> the shooting launched massive response. swat officers secured the per imtir and began going floor to floor. much of the hospital was evacuated. others hid or secured themselves in place. >> all of a sudden sent the cops came in with guns drawn an asked us all to leave. so they sent this all through the back door door. once we got throughout backdoor hearing three people got shot. >> plotts remains in critical condition at the hospital of the university of pennsylvania and dr. silberman very man was

what was he doing with a gun. we talked with the suspect's ex-wife tonight. >> he was always very controlling. and very violent. he was physically violent. physically abusive. minute alley abusive. and i just never saw it you know the many times he was in and out of jail i never -- i just never thought he changed from any of that. so i'm not surprised. >> no, no! get back. >> call went out as all county assist and officers from all over delaware county rushed to the mercy wellness center. heavily armed officers quickly surrounded the building and ordered everyone to get out. a gunman was on the loose. >> i was at the doctor's office on the third floor and left to go to the pharmacy right there and got halfway there and said no, no, you have to go back, go back, doctor and two patients are shot. we -- the shooter is still at large. >> as many as 100 doctors, nurses and other personnel in the 3-story building as well as patients. >> the cops tell everybody to

get out and you beener us out and i tried to get my patients out of the room and i'm just -- this is crazy. crazy. >> at first officers were not sure if a second shooter was involved. it was later determined that richard plotts act add loan. his neighborhoods say he has a history of mental problems. >> just that you could tell he was strange. you know, that there was something he needed help. >> i think i've seen and maybe write want to say medication but it could have been drugs involved tie stayed away from him for that reason. >> meanwhile people were absolutely amazed and astonished that psychiatrist lee silverman was carrying a weapon and act as hi did possibly saving lives of others. >> i don't know if he needed to have a begun permit unless concealed about your person. >> in any event he was hailed as hero for decisive actions to stop a criesed gunman. >> he was able to save other frem harm's way.

police say 39-year-old samantha starnes lashed the boy with a belt more than two dozen times at their home on radbourne road. and is that the where officers found welts on his back, arms and legs. he is now staying with another family member while his mother remains in custody. and there has been an arrest involving the deadly hit-and-run surveillance video that we showed last night. camden county authorities say 61-year-old jose sosa was the driver of a white van when he hit a map over the weekend and kept going. it happened on north 27 street in camden saturday night. 39-year-old alfred i owe trehill died tuesday from injuries and sosa is held on $85,000 bail. hundreds of motorcyclists came together in honor of a friend that died day. ryan

miller crashed in east bradford township just three miles from where his brother robe died last month also in a motorcycle wreckch the ride included a dine and donate dinner first. funeral arrangements were announced today for four young victims that died in a house fire in southwest philadelphia. little 1-month-old tay taj jacqu and boawah. a montgomery county family is suing new jersey and a shore town over a 201 drowning. 52-year-old brad smith of horsham was walking in shallow water along a north wildwood beach when sfwhept along with his 7-year-old daughter. a jet skier rescued the girl and extensive search could not locate smith. his widow ales that the sand collapsed beneath their feet and

beach replenishment work contributed to the danger and nemtion. north wildwood said that section beach has no lifeguards and does prohibit swimming. the family of expectant mother that died during childbirth is suing the city of philadelphia. family of joanne rodriguez says improper trainee and faulty equipment for her death. when paramedics answered a call they did not give her oxygen ten minute and once at the hospital they say the ambulance doors and locks would not open trapping her. she died and her bade son was born with brain damage. >> a lawsuit won't bring joanne back or free xavier from disability or ever heal the loss and pain this family endured but hopefully it will make the city realize that anyone who calls 911 deserves better than this. >> reporter: city has declined
