the air algerie jet has now been found in mali. none of the 116 on board survived. >> nearly half of the passengers were french. many going home from africa. the pilot had apparently changed course because of the severe storms in the area. >> it is, of course, the third air disaster in a week. abc's susan saulny has more. >> reporter: the scene feels eerily familiar, a lost passenger plane. this time over africa. anguished family and friends gathered desperate for information. overnight the authorities from several countries confirmed that wreckage had been found. the plane an air algerie md83 carrying 116 people crashed on thursday in severe weather over the strife-torn country of mali. about 50 minutes into the flight, the pilots wanted to change course according to the french, the jet disappeared. this shows what the plane was heading into, strong storms. >> it's likely to be a combination of the weather and the pilots not being able to react to the weather.

>> reporter: but the french foreign minister wouldn't rule out any cause among the possibilities terrorism. mali is home to an al qaeda affiliate. but while they may have shoulder-launch missiles like these they can't reach a jet at high altitude where the md-83 was flying. travelers may be concerned about air safety given the recent spate of grim aviation accidents. >> the whole picture is that flying remains far safer than you even getting in the car and driving to the grocery store. >> reporter: nearly half of the air algerie passengers were french. many on their way home from africa. susan saulny, abc news, washington. and there are new calls for united nations team to take over securing the malaysian airlines crash in ukraine. pro-russian rebels controlling that area are accused of hindering the investigation and now the obama administration says russian forces are escalating hostilities by firing at ukraine from inside russia. the state department also says it has evidence that russia plans to deliver more weapons

and more pro-russian fighters to the rebels in ukraine. in the mideast the violence spilled over into the west bank and thousands of palestinian protesters are battling forces neera mala where they are demonstrating against israel's military action in gaza. palestinian officials inside gaza say 119 people were killed on thursday alone. making it the bloodiest day yet in this war. but there is word this morning that negotiators are working on a possible one-week cease-fire. solving the immigration crisis tops president obama's meeting today. one idea under consideration a pilot program that would screen minors before they leave home and give them refugee status. whether those leaders are ready to take their children back. new details about the shootout that put a philadelphia area hospital on lockdown and let a worker dead. police say a mentally disturbed

patient shot the employee inside a doctor's office at the hospital. that's when the doctor pulled out his own gun and exchanged fire with the patient. police say the doctor likely saved lives. >> this could be a much different situation if the perpetrator was allowed to continue with his actions, so i give credit to the staff for intervening. >> the patient was hit three times and is in critical condition. the doctor, a psychiatrist only received a grazed wound chts a deadly twister at a popular campground in virginia. a couple was killed when a tree fell on their tent and nearly 40 other injured. it blew in with huge hail and winds as strong as 100 miles per hour flipping over rvs and snapping dozens of trees. many campers had very little w ended up being. >> about 1300 vacationers were
