good afternoon in the news this noon, parents, students and teachers gathered to call for more funding for philadelphia schools. >> and a raging overnight fire destroyed a home while the family was on vacation. >> but the big story is breaking news, a two star army general is killed in an attack west of kabul afghanistan. the incident happened at camp karga. he is the highest ranking military official to ever be killed in the war in afghanistan. 15 others were wounded in the attack. and half of them were americans, it happened when someone in an afghan army uniform snuck on to the base. a brigadier general was also wounded in the attack.

stay with abc news for updates throughout the day. the son of a local congressman is awaiting a court hearing after surrendering to authorities on fraud and tax charges. only "action news" was there when he arrived at the courthouse. vernon odom joins us live now with the detail. >> reporter: sara today's developments come after a two and a half year investigation that included multiple subpoenas of his computer files. son of the powerful congressman. >> i think this entire investigation is politically motivated and i'm looking forward to my day in court. shaq

he has been indicted on charges of defrauding banks and the u.s. government of thousands of dollars, for two and a half years he has been on investigation by the fbi for allegedly making false statements for banks and the small business administration to make lesser payments for loans. failing to pay his taxes and stealing federal funds with a contract through the philadelphia school district. he says he committed no crimes. >> i am successful in my business but i earned every dollar legitimately and i don't think that this is a way an investigation is typically handled, they have spent millions of dollars working on this for two and a half years. >> he is due to be arraigned this afternoon, if convicted of all of these charges, he faces jail time and a fine of up to $13 million.

so far no comment today from congressman. live at the courthouse in center city, vernon odom, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. in other news, chopper 6 hd was over pennypack park in northeast philadelphia this morning where the body of a woman was discovered and a murder investigation is now underway. police say that the 46-year-old victim was found near the crispin recreation center. it appears the unidentified woman was strangled while out for a run last night. we'll have more on this story coming up on "action news" at 4:00. a delaware homeowner comes face-to-face with a burglar when she checks with her property under investigation, she fights back and shoots the intruder, chad pradelli joins us in stanton with all the details. >> rick, the suspect is the man

that is now hospitalized it happened at 6:00 a.m. and delaware state police say that the female homeowner and her adult son walked into the home, and they found a man sleeping upstairs in the bedroom. that female homeowner fired a gun and hit the suspect in the lower body. the suspect ran on foot into the surrounding area and spurred a manhunt by authorities. they eventually found the suspect in a nearby trailer park. the helicopter woke neighbor george cox. >> people were breaking in and taking stuff and even partying in the place. >> delaware state police confirmed that the home is the subject of several break-ins, the female homeowner and her adult son are renovating the house after her father passed away. fearing for her safety she came

to the home packing heat. >> better for her. if someone was going to break into my house i would do the same thing. protect yourself and do what you can do. >> the burglar will be charged and they are still investigating the homeowner to see if she had a license to carry, and if she was justified to shoot. delaware state police say that the suspect is okay and expected to be release later on today and will be charged with burglary and other related charges. chad pradelli, channel 6 "action news." >> all right chad thank you. a father from the german town section of philadelphia is charged with murder in the death of his 2-month-old son, 20-year-old brian armstrong brought his son to einstein hospital with severe injuries on friday, the infant was transferred to saint christophers, and he was charged

with aggravated assault and they have now upgraded those charges to murder. a chadds ford home was zried by flames, flames lit up the night sky, and battled the blaze on the unit block of camden lane. the house is located in a wooded area up on a high hill. the home was gutted by the fire. so far no word on what may have sparked the blaze. a man and woman are in a critical condition, after their car slammed into an abandoned house late last night. the car lost control and took down numerous light poles before stopping and the impact caused the house to collapse. investigators are trying to determine what led up to the crash. a trial was underway for a day care provider who is charged with leaving five children alone in a car in philadelphia. karen thompson is charged with

get out! >> people on the side a flooded roadway tried desperately to warn others to get out of harm's way. they got out of the way just in the nick of time, numerous roads in the las vegas valley are closed today because of flooding. two wild fires in california are threatening the small town of bernie. the fire has destroyed eight homes and is threatening 700 others, it was only 10% contained as of last night. there is a chance of thunderstorms in today's forecast and they are mara: it's easy to lose your way in a place like this.
