making news in america this morning, deadly attack. a high ranking member of the army killed in a brazen ambush in afghanistan. a live report on what we've learned about the general overnight. severe weather, heavy rain causes a dangerous landslide forcing evacuations and taking out a home. as people in another state race for a hurricane barreling their way. desperate search. a young girl's parents wake up to find her bed empty and she's nowhere to be found. the latest on the investigation and the criminal past that has authorities taking a close look at one family member. and surprise guest. hillary clinton drops in on stephen colbert making for a hilarious late night moment.

and good wednesday morning to you. great to have you with us. well, there is shock and grief across the country at the loss of a high ranking army official in afghanistan. >> major general harold greene gunned down by u.s. trained afghan security forces. he's now the most senior u.s. officer killed in action since the pentagon attack on 9/11. here's abc's tahman bradley. >> reporter: a two-star american general, harold greene, gunned down by an afghan soldier. his northern virginia neighborhood is stunned. >> it's a shock and it's awful, the way that happened. somebody pulled a gun that was supposed to be on his side. just terrible. >> reporter: this morning, we're learning more about general greene and his mission, he had just been sent to afghanistan after being promoted to deputy commander of training. it was supposed to be a routine visit to an afghan military academy tuesday, the general there to check on the progress of afghan troops in training. from an elevated position, the shooter, a member of the afghan security forces strikes using an

automatic weapon. general greene is hit and more than a dozen others wounded. within seconds american soldiers so-called guardian angels fire back killing the gunman. >> any form of trust between the afghans and the u.s. trainers has now been fully broken. probably an inside job set up by the taliban. >> reporter: greene is the first u.s. general to die in a war zone from hostile fire since vietnam. >> the loss of any life is tragic. no life is worth any more than another life. but the symbolism of the loss of a major general in conflict will have a huge effect on u.s. forces. >> reporter: greene is survived by his wife, a retired couple, son and active duty soldary endaughter, a recent college grad. general greene was an engineer with a ph.d. and three master degrees on his first deployment to a war zone. devin and reena. >> abc's tahman bradley, thank you. a developing story we've been watching overnight.

a united airline flight forced to land in nova scotia after a fire in the galley. passengers tweeted photos of firefighters boarding the 777 at halifax airport. the fire was already out when it landed but still folky in the cabin. united dispatched another plane to pick up those passengers. new overnight for the first time we're seeing new photos of former taliban captive bowe bergdahl. the photos show an apparently healthy-looking bergdahl dressed in military fatigues. they were taken during a legal conference with his attorney at forth sam houston in texas. bergdahl faces questions today from army investigators about his disappearance in afghanistan in 2009. this morning there is a new report of another major computer security breach. "the new york times" says that russian hackers have stolen more than a billion user names and passwords. this breach impacts 420,000 websites. apparently, though, little of the information is being sold to other online crooks, instead it's being used to send marketing pitches and other junk

e-mail. a three-day cease-fire is holding more than 24 hours after it went into effect. palestinians ventured back into the streets of gaza as the sh l shelling stopped and shops re-opened. delegates are in cairo for talks aimed at keeping the peace. there are signs that hamas may be willing to give palestinian president mahmoud abbas a role in gaza. a second american missionary is now being treated for ebola in a special isolation unit at an atlanta hospital and arrived yesterday giving new hope to her family who have been considering funeral arrangements. here's abc's marci gonzalez. >> reporter: relief worker nancy writebol now back on american soil. the second ebola patient ever in the u.s. too weak to walk but reportedly getting better. >> she's showing signs of progress and is moving in the right direction. >> reporter: her colleague dr. kent brantly's health also improving. both are now being treated in

specially isolated rooms here at emory university hospital in atlanta. they were infected in liberia while helping ebola patients. this is the deadliest ebola outbreak ever. of the nearly 2500 deaths reported since the 19971970s, a third happened this year and british airways suspended flights from liberia and sierra leone. doctors are monitoring both patients' conditions here and told writebol has an appetite again which is adding to their optimism about her recovery. marci gonzalez, abc news, atlanta. our thanks to marci. hawaii is bracing for a one/two pump as two major storms race toward the islands. hurricane iselle could strike and tropical storm julio would strike two days later. people are stocking up and they're urging them to have seven days' worth on hand. schools will be closed tomorrow

ahead of the storms. a utah neighborhood remains on edge as there was a dangerous landslide. cameras were there as this damaged home collapsed in the slide. residents warned the hilltop behind it had been cracking and slipping away. fortunately the family whose home was destroyed heard a noise and escaped unharmed. three hopes remain evacuated. thunderstorms which brought light rain and humidity are helping crews as they battle two major fires in northern california. the iler fire is now 20% contained. everybody forced to evacuate has now returned home. now to a terrifying crash in new york city, two huge double-decker tour buses colliding in the middle of times square. the street was packed with tourists when one of the buses sideswiped an suv then hit another bus before knocking over a traffic light. that traffic light coming down in a flash as this earth cam camera shows on the left.

15 were hurt including a child in a stroller and a tour guide who had to be extricated from the dashboard. >> i heard a big boom. i saw the pole going like tumbling down. >> everybody was like lying down on the ground injured. supreme screaming. asking for help. >> reporter: amazingly there were no serious injuries, both bus drivers passed breathalyzer tests. so far no charges have been filed. time now for the weather from across the nation. a mixed blessing for northern california. more rain but a flash flood, as well. showers crossing the country, heaviest in the central midwest. scattered storms in the northeast states. a few showers along the gulf. highs today, 70s along the great lakes and 90s along the south, 80s to the north, triple digits still in the desert southwest. well, mark your calendars, apple fans. we know when the new iphone will be unveiled. developing right now, a 6-year-old girl seemingly

welcome back. stocks open today at their lowest level since may after taking a big tumble over tensions between russia and ukraine. the dow plunged 140 points tuesday to the lowest level since may. the nasdaq lost 31 points. the s&p was down by 19. this morning, asian markets followed suit also falling as

russian troops amass near the ukraine border. subaru is recalling thousands of cars because of a possible air bag problem. it involves the baja, legacy, outback, impreza and saab 9-2x. metal fragments could fly out when deployed but so far no reports of injuries. the next generation of apple's iphone will be launched september 9th. that would mean sales will start ten days later. plenty of rumors though swirling about a larger screen size but exact details remain under wraps. well, the price of bacon has reached a record high. the government says the breakfast favorite now sells for just over $6 a pound. that's up 41% since june 2012. there are several factors driving up the cost including a virus that's killing piglets and the extreme drought. mcdonald's is promising customers in south florida a free lunch if their

on both ends of i-80 and along a good stretch of i-70. 49 along the gulf coast should be slick as well. airport delays possible along the coast, washington, philadelphia, new york and boston. now to the northwest and the search for 6-year-old girl who hasn't been seen since saturday night. >> authorities say jenise wright is the subject of a missing persons case there with suspicious circumstances. abc news obtained court records that show her father was charged with molesting his stepdaughter back in 1999 and pled guilty to assault but james wright is not a suspect or a person of interest in her disappearance. >> i'm hoping she's spending the night somewhere. she's really independent. she's tenacious. >> i want them to find her. that's -- i mean, none of us can sleep. >> reporter: james wright allowed a search of the family home on monday. he's also taken a lie detector test but investigators won't release the results. meanwhile, in oregon the body of a missing woman gone for

nearly two weeks has been found. police could announce the reason 38-year-old jennifer huston died as soon as today. her body was found near a rural road yesterday about 25 miles from her home. police have said there's no sign of foul play in the case. she leaves behind a husband and two young sons. well, security cameras reportaurora -- recorded a smas grab. two men rushed in as the manager was opening on sunday and smashed four display cases with hammers and crowbar, took $250,000 in jewelry. drove off in a stolen van. the entire robbery took just 48 seconds. >> well, a young boy in florida was forced to spend his 9th birthday in the hospital as he recovered from a shark attack. christian was swimming in the ocean in melbourne when the three-foot shark attacked. since hospitalized he's had two surgeries. >> i saw it come right to my

of the wnba is doing now that she's going to be coaching in the nba. we get becky hammon's story from kirk hawkins. >> reporter: becky hammon accepted a job with the san antonio spurs. >> i'm a little overwhelmed to be perfectly hobbs. >> reporter: the 37-year-old from rapid city will be the first full time paid assistant on an nba coaching staff. >> she has a great basketball mind. we think she'd be a great addition. >> reporter: she plays for the san antonio stars, her 16th season in the wnba. after a record-breaking turn as a three-time all-american at colorado state university. she helped russia win a bronze medal in the 2008 olympics after not being invited to try out for the u.s. team. hamman got her start playing high school basketball inspired by her dad who gave her this advice while growing up. >> you'll never be able to play in the nba but he said if you're really, really good maybe you can get a college discrepancy and so, you know, i'm going to have to call him up and say,
