happened as the trooper served the search warrant, in bear this morning. troopers say that a man opened fire as they entered the home. the bullet struck the trooper in the upper body. the trooper was treated and released from the hospital and the suspect is take and into custody. governor tom corbett said he would advance the philadelphia school district $265 million, but superintendant, william hite, says that doesn't assure that the schools will open on time. the point is early money doesn't mean more money. >> not in philadelphia jim. i was thinking today, this city every summer featured a disaster drama, a remake of the horror classic will they collapse or survive? the actors change but it's

always the same basic plot. >> when the governor came, demonstrators came to demand more money for philadelphia schools but the governor came with cold cash, advancing the philadelphia school district some $265 million that he hopes will allow the schools to open on time and avoid layoffs. this is early dispersements of funds that philadelphia gets through the year. >> the department of education has certified the 1% sales tax that will result money for the school district. >> they are calling on the republican controlled general assembly to return to harrisburg to authorize the city to levy a $2 a pack cigarette tax that will generate $80 million for the schools, william hite says

it's still not enough and it will be august 18th before they decide to open the schools on time. >> we still need $81 million, and it changes nothing, but adds significant information in the decision making process. >> state house democrats held a hearing at city hall to highlight the delay of the package and that cigarette tax. mayor nutter was front and center. >> without enactment of the cigarette tax, the city of philadelphia will not and does not have the necessary revenues to open our schools on time and safely and for an entire school year. >> reporter: and one other note, when william hite gets the $80 million thrust he wants $220 million on top of that to rehire

the employees that have been laid off. police have released new information tonight about a crash that snarled the morning commute in montgomery county, a man was critically injured by his own bmw, the victim was pumping gas on belmont avenue at 6:00 this morning, the car was still in drive and rolled away, the man chased his vehicle and it collided with another car, belmont boulevard was closed as police investigated the situation. from our delaware newsroom, a man driving a stolen car hit parked vehicles in wilmington. it happened at 27th and washington street just before 11:00 this morning. they noticed the vehicle before the crash but did not say if they were fur suing the driver. police arrested the driver and several people were hurt but did not say how serious their

injuries are. >> several people are in custody following a shooting in musikfest in bethlehem, the shooting happened at 7:00 last night, police say they tried to break up a large crowd when someone fired. someone was shot in the hip and north in the groin, both were take and to lehigh valley hospital in stable condition. so far no suspects questioned have been charged . someone seems to be taunting a woman in mantua, and the story line sounds like it's from a b movie. john rawlins has the details. >> reporter: amanda is playing with new puppy gracie and 13-year-old coco, her dogs. after items were thrown into her backyard. >> i think that someone is trying to tim date me.

anything on them trying to harm my new dog and chihuahua. she is baffled as to why someone is trying to cause her distress. john rawlins, channel 6 "action news." hundreds of workers are rallying to protest the planned closure of an atlantic city casino. about 400 trump plaza workers are there and the protest comes after trump entertainment company announced it is going to shut down the casino on september 17th, it's the worst performing casino and one of four that has closed or is expected to close. coming up tonight, proposed changes may mean a new route for the mummers parade and a former eagles player is learning the play book as a coach. and showers are trying to come down the mid-atlantic region and the humidity will

there is word that the mummers parade may get a makeover this january, the big change involves changing and reversing the route. it begins at oregon avenue and they strum up to city hall and they are judged. they want to start the judging at city hall and march to washington avenue, that would get the stress of the competition out of way first and make the event more parade like for viewers and for the mummers.

it's called work ready philadelphia, and thanks to it hundreds of young people are more prepared to enter the workforce and the program came to a climax today at the convention center and katherine scott was right there. >> we don't have the things we need to help the children. >> so brown and the rest of her team, the freedom writers spent the last six weeks trying to change that. they are looking for ways to stop mass incarceration in families in the community. >> we go out and research and collect data. this is the culmination of a summer's hard work, nearly 400 young people presented 93 projects from this year's work ready philadelphia ex po, work ready prepares youth and young adults for work.
