good morning, miami michelle franzen. >> i'm devin dwyer. we begin with the death of a hollywood legend, rashth and comedian robin williams, of course, found dead in his home north of san francisco. apparently from suicide caused by asphyxia. >> he delighted millions with a career that spanned nearly 40 years. but unfortunately that legacy of laughs apparently hit a very painful personal battle. abc's tahman bradley leads off our coverage. >> overnight, hollywood mourned the loss of legendary actor robin williams. from the iconic comedy club, the laugh factory to the hollywood walk of fame to the premiere of "expendables 3," shock and sadness. >> we are mourning the loss of such a great man. you know, he was such a fantastic actor. >> he was awe a unique guy. he was just a force of nature. >> reporter: the academy award winner died monday at his home in northern california. they suspect he took his own life. williams representative said he

had been battling severe depression of late. online fan, celebrities and williams' family grieved. i love you, i miss you, i'll try to keep looking up his daughter zelda tweeted. >> he was one of a kind. he arrived in our lives as an alien but he ended up touching every element of our spirit. as an oddball alien in the television classic "mork & mindy." >> be free. you must revolt against your oppressors. you nothing to lose but your shells. >> reporter: entertainment weekly called him the funniest man alive but many of his roles were mixed with warmth and wit. "good morning, vietnam," "dead poets society," "mrs. doubtfire" and "good will hunting" for which he won his oscar. >> i thought about what you said to me the other day about my painting. >> reporter: an autopsy is scheduled for today and the coroner will hold a news conference. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. we've been hearing in recent

years about williams' battle with addiction. >> that's right. eight years ago back in 2006 he sat down with our own diane sawyer and opened up to her about the darkness of his struggle with addiction. but as always, he showed a glimmer of hope. >> people say how do you feel. with my fingers. how don't drink. what are you doing to stay that way? don't drink. >> just alcohol. >> just alcohol. that's enough really. that's all. >> so to talk about it as caused by something -- >> not caused by anything. it's just there. it's latent. it waits. humiliations give you humility. literally. >> was there something somebody said, one sentence that got through that sailed through? >> you're a drunk. no, it's like it got through to me saying you need and that's the best sentence that got through if are you yourself -- >> no, that's another side of yourself that you don't know. dr. jekyll, mr. jack daniels. >> is there a sadness about these past two years then? >> um, yeah, there's a sadness

then you have to go -- then there's also hope. sadness is always like, yeah, you wish they hadn't happened but they did and the purpose is to make you different. it's that idea of you're back and you realize the thing that matters are others. way beyond yourself. >> and we know williams was back at a treatment facility as recently as last month but we don't know yet whether any substances played a role. the toxicology tests will be due out here after the autopsy in several more weeks. >> also williams was set to star in the sequel of "mrs. doubtfire." that is doubtful, though. reportedly likely to be cancelled. >> that's right. stay with abc news for the latest on the death of robin williams later on "good morning america." how celebrities reacted overnight and on twitter. so much more coming up later. and abc news will have an hour-long tribute to williams on a special edition of "20/20" tonight at 10:00 eastern. the other major story we're following this morning is the growing unrest near st. louis,

missouri, after the shooting of that unarmed teenager by police. officers in riot gear used tear gas to break up a crowd of protesters late lathe last night in ferguson. his mother is hoping for peace in the city. >> i'm going through something i can't even explain to you. i can't even describe to you. they took my son from me. they just took my son to me. >> details what led to the shooting are not clear. the fbi has launched its own review of the incident. now to another major story this morning. the latest on the political showdown in iraq. the current prime minister, nuri al maliki, says he's going to hold on to the job despite the fact that another politician has been chosen to be the next leader. the selection of hader al abadi as the new prime minister has the backing of the white house. >> earlier today vice president

biden and i called dr. abadi to congratulate him and urge him to form a new cabinet as quickly as possible. >> as for the battle against those islamic militants, the pentagon says u.s. air strikes have slowed isis down, but they're unlikely to affect the militants' overall capabilities or operations. fire crews in the northwest are battling more than two dozen wildfires this morning. more thunderstorms in the region today have raised concerns about new fires. lightning was the spark for many of the blazes in washington, oregon, northern california and idaho. most of those are in state or national forests or heavily wooded land. meanwhile, flood warnings are in effect this morning for the detroit area until at least daybreak. a storm late yesterday dumped more than 5 inches of rain in just a few hours. the average for the entire month of august, only 3 inches of rain. riders in a city bus, there you see, terrified as it filled up with goodwater. drivers were stranded this their

cars. and a lot more weather on the way. time for weather from across the nation. a cold front will bring cooler temperatures and thunderstorms to the northwest. heavy rain will also drench the southwest and slowly move from the eastern midwest to the east coast. >> we'll see more moderate temperatures today in the 80s in the west coast, upper 80s in the rockies and the 70s near the great lakes today. highs will be around 90 along the gulf coast and in the mid-70s, very pleasant, in the northeast. well, still ahead a new weapon in the fight against cancer. the test just approved by the fda for one of the deadliest fors of the disease. new details in the racetrack death involving tony stewart and what we're learning about a second video of the crash. plus, much more on the death of robin williams. we have reaction from celebrities and his friends and a look at some of his best performances. >> medicine, law, business, engineering. these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life but poetry, beauty, romance, love,

washington, phoenix and atlanta. recapping our top story this morning, the death of robin williams. >> tributes have been pouring in from around the world over the news of the apparent suicide of the hollywood legend. we've been hearing in recent years about his past struggles with addiction and his agent now says the 63-year-old had been battling severe depression. this morning, even those close to williams and his struggles are stunned. >> he went through -- we're surprised he lived as long as he did with all the craziness in the '80s. we figured he was over the hump. >> the preliminary cause of death is suicide by asphyxia. an autopsy will be performed later today. and abc news will have much more on the passing of robin williams late they are morning, a special edition of "good morning america." some new details in the investigation of the racetrack tragedy involving tony stewart.

an autopsy has found that 20-year-old driver kevin ward jr. died of blunt force trauma after being struck by stuart's car. investigators are now analyzing a second video of the incident taken from a different angle than we've seen before. police maintain they have found no criminal conduct and they have no plans to interview stuart for a third time. ward's funeral is set for thursday. a major medical headline this morning. the fda has approved a gene test to screen for colon cancer. it's called cologuard and detected 92% of colon cancers in 10,000 patients. a colon no scopy is the best procedure. colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the u.s. a close call for a child in the london subway system. a baby stroller is left parked against a wall and a gust of wind in the tunnel apparently

blows the stroller on to the tracks with the baby inside it. then a woman leaps down and saves the child. it is not known, though, if she is the child's mother. and check this out. a dirt bike racer in southern california is doing great until, watch the left side. that deer steps out in front of him. taking him right to the ground. the deer just ran away. the rider took a little while longer to get back up, as you might imagine. >> kind of blends in the scenery, same color as the ground. sports highlights and baseball highlights. >> we get some of last night's highlights from our guys at espn. >> welcome to our "sportscenter" set in los angeles. he's neil everett. i'm stan verrett. orioles in first place but might have a concern. >> i have never colored my hair, by the way. manny machado is the concern. he's had knee problems in the past and he's got a knee problem again. been the left kneecap in the

♪ welcome back. remembering a hollywood legend. >> robin williams dead at the age of 63 of an apparent suicide. the comedian, actor and hollywood legend leaves behind a legacy of laughs and now a trail of tears. tributes are pouring in from around the world. abc's jimmy kimmel tweeting "robin was as sweet a man as he was funny. if you're sad please tell someone ♪ >> from actor kevin spacey "robin williams made the world laugh and think, i will remember and honor that. a great man, artist and friend. i will miss him beyond measure." and this particular touching message from the academy of motion picture arts and sciences. through and this memorial you see growing at the so-called "good will hunting" bench in the boston public garden. the same spot where you see robin and matt damon filming that now famous scene. >> yeah, people are returning there leaving movie quotes written in chalk at the base of the bench along with flowers. next, a moment williams said he would never forget. >> this is 200le. he was performing for troops in kuwait. every soldier suddenly turned around when they heard a song started playing. williams clearly had no idea what was happening. >> he didn't realize that the soldiers stand at attention when the base's flag did being lowered and williams turned it into a great moment. >> i'm not going to forget that. [ laughter ] i've never had an entire audience go, forget you. you have no idea. [ cheers and applause ] i was also wondering what's coming from that way.
