good friday morning. i'm devin dwyer. >> i'm michelle franzen. we begin with the national outcry over the shooting of an unarmed teen near st. louis. >> more than a thousand demonstrators marching in new york city overnight chanting hands up, don't shoot. hands also in the hair in boston during a moment of silence for michael brown and a similar keen in chicago where an angry crowd demanded justice. meanwhile, in ferguson, it was a purchase calmer night. more from abc's tahman bradley. >> reporter: overnight a peaceful almost festive scene on the streets of ferguson, missouri, the community rallying to demand answers after michael brown, an unarmed black teenager was shot and killed by a police officer last saturday. it was a dramatically different scene than wednesday night when ferguson police looking like a small army with tanks and heavy weapons clashed with demonstrators.

>> the people that's been violent is the police. >> reporter: after that violence missouri governor jay nixon ordered a change in tactics and stripped local police of their authority, replacing them with the state highway patrol. >> i know that ferguson will not be defined as a community torn apart by violence. >> reporter: last night, crowds cheered the trooper in charge captain ron johnson who lives in the community and marched alongside the protesters. >> so as the old saying i've got a dog in this fight. i'll got a big dog in this fight. >> reporter: other americans sharing similar feelings. >> i may not be the same nationality as them but it's close enough to my home and age. >> reporter: from chicago, to times square, to howard university, people are showing solidarity with michael brown. authorities are still investigating exactly what happened before brown was shoot and killed. there has been enormous pressure to identify the officer who pulled the trigger and we could learn the man's name later today. tahman bradley, abc news,

washington. >> thank you, tahman. much more on the unrest in ferguson later on "good morning america." a live report from the scene of the protests. plus, robin roberts interviews missouri governor jay nixon and ferguson police chief thomas jackson. the other major story we've been watchingover night is the safe return of two amish sisters who van othered from the family farm. >> the disappearance triggered a massive search in a rural area not far from the canadian border. abc's gio benitez is there. >> reporter: it was a race against time when the two little amish girls vanished. but just hours ago both were found alive by a total stranger taken back home. >> we received the thus that the girls had been found and everybody was just relieved. >> reporter: it was 7:20 fannie miller and her 6-year-old sister delilah working their family's roadside vegetable stand when a red four-door sedan pulled up when it drove off, the girls were gone. their family living in this

traditional amish community of 10,000, they have no phone, they ran to a neighbor's house to call police setting off the search on land. rescue teams even searching under water. police only had this sketch to work from. that's because an amish tradition being photographed is not allowed. but late thursday night police say their alleged kidnapper dropped them off at a small town about 30 miles away from home. they walked to the closest house and knocked on the door still wearing that amish attire. the man at the house recognized them from news reports and took them home. >> there's relief. but there's relief because we have two children returned home safe to their parents but there's still an active criminal investigation here because somebody still took these children away from their home. >> i can't wait till they arrest these people if there's more than one because i would love to have an opportunity to prosecute them. >> reporter: and so right now applause and good news here at the search command center after those girls were found alive. they've been reunited with their

families and we're told they are speaking with investigators. gio benitez, abc news, new york. now to a stunning revelation about robin williams just days after he shocked the world by taking his own life. williams' wife revealed he was struggling with the early stages of parkinson's disease but wasn't ready to go public with his diagnosis. she said he was sober but there was also his battle with depression and anxiety. >> it's an overwhelming diagnosis for anyone but there is a link. we know major depression occurs in about 20% to 40% of patients with parkinson's. >> michael j. fox a longtime friend of his since 199 1 tweeted stunned to learn robin had pd. a true friend, i wish him peace." >> now to the crisis in iraq. new u.s. air strikes have successfully blown up armed vehicles controlled by militants. the president says those strikes will continue.

meanwhile, embattled prime minister nuri al maliki is announced he's stepping aside of the a move applauded by the white house. his decision ends a political deadlock that plunged the country into uncertainty. the ebola outbreak may be much worse than the numbers indicate. the world health organization points to evidence of cases of death and sickness because of the virus may be vastly underreported. it's already the deadliest outbreak in history claiming more than a thousand lives. pope francis has already had a busy day as his trip to south korea continues after taking a high-speed train from seoul, he celebrated mass for thousands of young asians inside a soccer stadium. he pressed one of his familiar themes urging the audience to renounce materialism and work to improve the lives of the poor. >> well, back here at home the incredible images to show you now from all that wide weather this week. >> some severe storms have wreaked havoc across a wide area of the interior west as you'll see, it is's lots of drying out

and cleaning up to do. the floodwaters rose so fast on one road in the colorado springs area that one elderly woman couldn't drive out fast enough. she was trapped until firefighters came to the rescue. further south in arizona, a homeowner shot this video as monsoon rain pushed a small river behind his house over its banks. it completely cut off parts of the neighborhood and just north of there, wind gusts were so strong along an interstate that two semis wound up on their sides closing the roads for hours. there were only minor injuries. meantime, that sinkhole on long island, new york, is one of the big reminders of this week's record rainfall. the crater was caused by a pipe that burst because of pressure from a nearby creek that was well over its banks. one area of lyong island receivd three months of rain in just a few hours. that will be clear and mostly sunny today that should help but expect plenty of rain from

delays is denver. a utah woman is in critical condition unable to speak after taking only one sip of sweet tea tainted with a toxic chemical. >> the woman's husband says she knew something was wrong right after the first sip and said she thought she drank acid. the manager of the restaurant serving the tea insists it was all a horrible accident. >> by the accounts we've heard so far either the store manager or the employee put six cups of this white powder substance into the ice tea mixer and stirred it up thinking that perhaps that was sugar. >> six cups of that white substance was actually lye used to clean equipment. investigators believe she's the only victim saying restaurant employees emptied out the tea dispenser right away. she's set to be tested today to determine whether her -- any chemical burns tore holes in her esophagus or stomachic. amy van dyken-rouen is back

home after being released from a denver hospital. she was paralyzed from the waist down after severing her spinal cord in an accident. the hardest part of leaving the hospital, she said, was saying good-bye to the staff. >> i've met some amazing people here and they've really changed the way i think. >> during her stay, van dyken-rouen lernered how to drive a car using hand controls. she says one of the first things she'll do now is get a driver's license. >> well, an amazing rescue captured on camera in florida. you can see here a lioness at zoo miami rescuing a cub after it fell into a moat keeping her grip on the little one until she gets it to the grass. the other lions keeping a close watch. this video you're seeing taken by a 10-year-old girl. she says after the rescue the lions gathered around and licked the cub clean. >> race car driver tony stewart

will not be racing this weekend's nascar event in michigan. he was behind the wheel last saturday night when his car hit 20-year-old kevin ward jr. killing him. it will be the second straight event stewart has missed since the incident. his plans for the rest of the nascar season remain undecided. and the next commissioner of major league baseball is 55-year-old rob manfred. he's worked for the league in increasingly senior positions since 1998. manfred will be the league's tenth commissioner, of course, he takes over early next year when current commissioner bud selig steps down. well, there are four games today at the little league world series two involve american team, the other two match up international squads. >> as for what happened in williamsport, pennsylvania, yesterday, here are our guys at espn. >> good morning, welcome to our "sportscenter" set in los angeles. along with neil everett, i'm stan verrett. neil is buttoning his jacket because he's ready for business. >> this is serious business and good for chicago.
