the suspect. >> we're watching the unrest in ferguson missouri where police say they were forced to fire tear gas overnight. >> a driver hits a boy on a bicycle then tries to help him but what the driver did next may have him facing charges. >> but first up let's get a quick look at your accuweather and your traffic. we'll go over to meteorologist david murphy, he's got that and karen rogers has traffic. good morning. >> looks like it will be a fairly sunny start as we go through the day. areas south of philadelphia looking at a little cloud cover, there may be a sprinkle in southern delaware right now or in cape may county, new jersey. that's not going the last all that long. overall some of these clouds will begin to well up and we're looking at a mix of sun and clouds today. the other thing the winds are turning more out of the south. that will increase the humidity. today it will feel stickier than yesterday. 68 degrees right now as you head out the door in philadelphia, 55 in allentown, 68 in wilmington and 74 degrees warmer right down at the shore in sea isle and atlantic city. as we roll through the day

accuweather says it's another warm afternoon, 74 by 9 o'clock but 80 by lunchtime and 84 by 3 o'clock. that is going to be your high this afternoon and again the humidity is going to be on the rise during the day and it will feel stickier out there, a little bit breezy as well. we are going to stick with that humid pattern over the next couple of days. when will it rain? we'll talk about that in the exclusive accuweather 7-day, karen. >> all right, dave. tam and sharrie have been talking about this overnight shooting and it is impacting your traffic situation as we look live now in tacony. this is torresdale and levick. we can see the emergency workers on the scene right now. police have this blocked off. torresdale avenue is shut down between distance street and hellerman. stick to frankford avenue as your alternate. ditman street is closed between levick and hellerman. walker is your alternative. mcgee avenue also closed. stick to lever rick street. the overnight shooting in the tacony section involving a number of street closures at this point, still impacting your morning commute.

looking live torresdale avenue one of the streets completely blocked off at this point at levick street as we can see with police and the crime scene tape still on the scene. looking at the pig picture, not looking at any accidents on your majors and speeds mostly in the 50's on the blue route schuylkill and i-95 in pretty good shape right now. let's just take one more live look. this is southwest philadelphia, i-95 approaching the airport here, we had construction just cleared a second ago because blocking the right lane and we can see traffic now moving a little bit better, tam. >> okay, thank you, karen. >> ♪ let's go right back to that breaking news that karen was just showing you a picture from the scene. a shootout between a suspect an philadelphia police officer left the officer wounded and the suspect dead. let's go to "action news" reporter katherine scott. she's live outside of einstein hospital. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tam and steven car -- korpalski is described as an excellent officer. he's a 14 year veteran of the philadelphia police

department. as for the suspect, police are working to confirm his identity. he was pronounced dead overnight and the weapon he allegedly fired was recovered at the scene. this all happened just before 12:45 this morning. officer korpalski and his officer were responding to a radio call for a plan with a gun at ditman by levick in tacony. they were on their way and they heard the description and they remembered seeing that suspect about a block back when they turned around and spotted him at mcgee and torresdale. police say the suspect immediately opened fire. korpalski and three other officers shot back. korpalski was greatd in there head. the police commissioner and the deputy commissioner were at the hospital visiting with the officer who was alert and talking. >> he's in cat scans but he's up and talking so that's always a good sign when you walk in a hospital, first thing you hear shot in the head and obviously all the alarms go off. but we arrived and he was sitting up talking and asking questions, so that was a good thing but any time you take ahead wound it's always a serious thing.

>> reporter: and the officers from the 15th district, he's married, he's the father of a three week old child. as is protocol with these investigations, the district attorney will be reviewing the case and internal affairs is investigating. we're live at einstein hospital, katherine scott channel 6 "action news." >> katherine thank you. the national guard on hand in ferguson, missouri, overnight ready to signed to any violent outbursts. "action news" reporter erin o'hearn is live in our satellite story following this story and the developments from overnight. >> the presence of the national guard and strict new protest rules did not stop new violent clashes on the streets of ferguson last night. this is now the ninth night of unrest in the saint louis suburb since a police officer shot unarmed teenager michael brownback on august 9th. the evening did begin peacefully but quickly

deteriorated when some members of the crowd reportedly started throwing rocks and molotov cocktails. missouri highway patrol captain ron johnson held somewhat of an emotional press conference overnight confirming that two people had been shot. one police officer came under gunfire and fires have been set at a business and an unoccupied residence. johnson says these were not the acts of peaceful protesters but the violent acts of a few criminals who have infiltrated the crowd. among the 31 arrests made overnight were people on the streets who were from new york and california. johnson reiterated that he was not discouraging peaceful protesters but had no tolerance for the ongoing violence. >> because of the dangers posed tonight i want to encourage the good people of this area to come out and protest tomorrow during the daytime hours. make your voices heard where you can be seen and when you're not the cover for violent agitators.

>> and johnson continued to defend his police force and the restraints they used overnight saying despite the fact that many of the officers came under heavy attack, not one bullet was fired by police officers on duty and again, he attributed most of the violence that occurred to a minority of people last night on the streets of ferguson. of course we will have more on this developing story in the next half hour. sharrie, back to you. >> okay, erin, thank you. and our coverage continues at 6abc.com. there you can find more information on the independent autopsy of michael brown, plus arresting photos of confrontations between protesters and police. >> a nine-year-old philadelphia boy is recovering this morning after being hit by a pickup truck. it happened on elkhart street in port richmond just before 6:00 last night. witnesses say the driver hit the boy, got out and shook him. then put him in his vehicle and left. police say the driver flagged them down on frankford avenue. the officers rushed the boy to saint christopher's hospital but the driver took off. the police say a short time

later he showed up at the hospital. no word yet on any charges. the boy is expected to make a full recovery. federal officials are working out the details of two mysterious deaths at sea. the investigation surrounds the hong kong based jim-co challenger. it's docked on the delaware river near trenton. two men were stabbed as the boat anchored off bethany beach on thursday. one died. the suspected attacker was found one day later in the water after apparently jumping overboard. >> a hearing is expected on two cases involving evidence that was at the delaware medical examiner's office but had not been tested there. it was tested at an independent lab after the delaware lab was closed. that lab is now at the center of a tampering investigation. the public defender's office will argue today that any evidence that passed through the me's drug lab should be thrown out and that could involve thousands of cases. >> david it sounds like the

heat comes back in today, the humidity. >> humidity definitely on the rise today, tam. as we take a look at storm tracker 6 live double scan we're mainly drive. areas down to the south of philadelphia with a little bit of a sprinkle or shower, cape may, down around louis delaware, everybody else on the dry side, even that stuff down south isn't that was bad. as we take a look outside, we have clear skies for the most part over philadelphia. the farther south you go through the region the better chance you have of seeing cloud cover buildup a bit on the morning side. temperatures right now aren't bad. 68 degrees in philadelphia. 68 in wilmington. still just 55 in allentown for the second straight morning you're in the 50's up in the lehigh valley. still holding onto 62 in reading, 60 in trenton. 64 in both sea isle city and down the shore on the boardwalk in a c. satellite shows you how the northern suburbs a lot of stars, skies starting to get brighter shortly. down to the south we have eroding shower activity. i think we'll winds up way mix

of sun and clouds across most of the region. up in allentown, probably a lot of sun with a new clouds, a bit on the humid side today. that's going to be a change in your forecast across the region. allentown as you saw is 84 this afternoon for a high. sun mixing with clouds, warm, perhaps a little muggier but of course you have the ocean water temperature treating you good in the mid 70's. on the beach the mid 70's by noon and a high of 80 by 3 o'clock this afternoon along most coastal areas. and in philadelphia we'll go with a high of 84, very similar to yesterday. the difference a few more clouds and that humidity more noticeable today, okay. it's also going to be a bit on the breezy side, eight to 16 miles per hour later on. here's how we get there. 71 by 8 o'clock, 78 by 11 o'clock, 83 by 2 o'clock, your high of 84 right around 3 o'clock and by 5 o'clock we're at 82 degrees. again a sun and clouds mix. tonight the phillies pretty similar to yesterday. 79 degrees for the first pitch. 72 in the ninth inning, partly cloudy. the main difference, it's going to be muggier down at the ballpark tonight so maybe a little extra reason to buy a

soda or bring along some cool water. then tomorrow looks like another clouds and sun mix. if we see any precipitation it will be late in the day in the northern and western suburbs but the latest model runs are basically just keeping us dry. your exclusive accuweather 7-day, more humid today. 84 degrees is the high. tomorrow warm and humid, 85. probably dry. if we see anything it's north and west, pop-up shower or storm. clouds with some sunny breaks on thursday and a better chance of a shower or a thunderstorm at times with a frontal boundary inching its way through and then on friday mostly cloudy, a high of 80 and there could be a lingering shower. at the same time i could see us starting to see the return of some sunshine in the afternoon on friday as we transition to better weather. and that better weather really hits us for the weekend. upper 70's on saturday and sunday. >> nice. >> low humidity. really gorgeous weekend coming. >> sounds like it. david, thank you. >> yup. >> time now is 5:11. we have more news you did not see last night. the search for a missing pregnant woman takes a tragic turn. find out who police arrested in connection with her death.

>> updating our top stories this morning and breaking at this hour a-philadelphia police officer has been shot in the line duty. it happened early this morning in the line duty. police say a suspect has been shot and killed in connection with this shooting. our katherine scott will have a live update on this story ahead at 5:30 a.m. >> let's go on over to karen rogers. she's got some of the traffic issues related to this active police scene as well as the rest of your traffic and weather update. good morning. >> that's right, good morning. we're looking live here in tacony. this is torresdale avenue. you can see the police, the flashing lights, emergency

workers, crime scene tape all blocking here torresdale avenue. it's closed between disston and heller plan streets. stick to frankford as your alternate. we have other street closures in the area related to this. be careful if you're headed in this area even at this early hour ditman street is is slut down as well as mcgee. in those areas stick to levick and walker as your alternates. three main road ways shut down in tacony with this overnight shooting so watch for that. let's check your suburban traffic report. we'll start with construction in the northeast extension here both ways between lansdale and quakertown blocking the right lane. speeds of about 54 miles an hour so not causing a big problem right now and in burlington county in new jersey here, we've got new jersey turnpike southbound between exit six and exit 5 construction here blocking two lanes. two lanes blocked and that's going to be for nearly another hour right now. let's take a look at satellite 6 and action radar. you can see we're dry throughout the region. you might expect a little bit

of sprinkle that could be reaching ground right now in cape may. for the rest of us it's a pretty good looking start to our day and we are going to see dry conditions today with some sunshine. it's go going to feel a little bit more humid today and a high of 84. no big weather related problems affecting your morning commute or your evening commute right now, tam. >> okay, thank you karen. u.s. airstrikes have helped iraqi and kurdish forces recapture the country's largest dam. eagles sis million stance seized the mosul dam on august 7th giving them access to power and major watery serves. the fear was the militants could have flooded mosul and baghdad killing thousands of people. the united nations said more than 600,000 people have been displaced in all of the latest fighting. the united states has supplied humanitarian aid and support. california police have found the body of a missing pregnant woman at the bottom of a mine shaft in the mojave desert. 19-year-old erin corwin was reported missing by her

husbands a u.s. marine back on june 28th. they have charged her lover in that murder. corwin was last seen headed to joshua national park where police believe she was going to meet lee. lee was recently honorably discharged from the marines and moved with his family to alaska. the phillies are back home and they opened a three game series against the mariners at the bank last night. take a look. third inning, two on for marlon byrd who then sends a shot deep left. turns out to be a rbi double which gave the phils a one-nothing lead and jimmy rollins not in the lineup but the phils did not need him. in the fifth andreas blanco filling in. a three run home run is how it turned out and the phillies actually win four to one. >> 5:17 now and new research shows drug use to treat a rare type of cancer may also show some promise to restore hair loss. >> and then huge flames get too close for comfort to homes out west forcing mandatory evacuations. we're back in a moment.

>> a raging wildfire continues to bear down on a foot hill community near yosemite national park in central california. authorities issued 13,000 phone calls to both residents and businesses to evacuate including 1500 homes and four hotels. the 500-acre blaze has burned at least two structures so far. it's unclear, however, what sparked the fire. >> going to take you outside right now and check some of our local traffic. the overnight contradiction is cleared on 202. crews return at 8 o'clock tonight. for now though looking pretty good out there on 202. in gloucester county on the turnpike northbound approaching exit two for 322 construction blocking the left lane and septa regional rail trenton line back to normal after big delays last evening. so looking good this morning, dave. >> thanks to my twitter follower mrs. hip pell for

cancer treatment. >> when it comes gas prices they continue to plummet as the summer rolls on. abc's michelle frandsen has this morning's business headlines in america's money. >> reporter: stocks on the rebound. the market is opening higher today after the dow surged 175 points yesterday. the nasdaq jumped to a 14 year high, closing above the 45 monday mark and the s & p up 16 points. good news for drivers. the national average for gas prices are now at $3.47 a gallon. that's down more than three cents in the past week and eight cents cheaper than this time last year. honda's accord and civic remain the most stolen vehicles in the u.s. that's according to a new report by the national insurance crime bureau. rounding out the top five chevy silverados ford f series and toyota camry. taco bell takes another shot in the fast food wars.

again. let's get right over to meteorologist, david murphy to tell us about this tuesday and karen rogers has your traffic. good morning. >> good morning everybody. and we're a you off to a decent start. it might be more humid outside. you see a few more clouds down south. a couple sprinkles and showers very light pretty much down south by cape may county not a big deal as we look at temperatures, 68 degrees right now in philadelphia and wilmington, just 55 in allentown. second straight morning you're starting in the 50's there. 62 in reading, 60 trenton and 74 at the boardwalk in atlantic city and down the coast in sea isle city. as we head out the door this morning, mainly clear and fairly comfortable, just a little bit muggy. by 6 o'clock 68 and 71 degrees by 8:00 a.m. so, not too bad to start out and in most cases dry outside of southern cape may county. as we roll through the day, 74 by 9
