a bicycle, then tries to help him. but what the driver did next may have him facing charges. >> we'll get to all of that in a moment. first up let's get a preview of what you can expect when you step outside and what's going on when it comes to your traffic. we've got david and karen. good morning. >> good morning everybody. we've got a fairly comfortable start across region right now. sun is getting ready to push up over the horizon. satellite shows you there's some coastal cloud cover but satellite shows you there's out the sun. won't last all that long. couple sprinkles in southern cape may county but those are also on their way out fairly quickly this morning. 66 in philadelphia. still 55 in allentown. we have dipped into the upper 50's in trenton but reading still holding onto 61 and we're in the 70's in some of those southern spots. might feel a little more muggy to you this morning than it did yesterday altugh here on lockterrace it's stiretty 80 by ne 5 norumr, it'stt bridge

>> okay karen. let's stay on this story. this shootout between a suspect and a philadelphia police officer left the officer wounded and the suspect dead overnight. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live outside of einstein hospital. that's where the officer was taken and she's got the latest details. good morning, katherine. >> reporter: good morning, tam. officer steven korpalski is a 14 year veterans of the force. his superiors describe him as an excellent officer. he was listed in stable condition this morning. officers say that he was alert and he was talking. as for the suspect, police are still trying to confirm his identity. however, he was pronounced dead overnight. the weapon that he allegedly fired at police was recovered at the scene. you can see it lying there in the street. this all happened just before 12:45 a.m. officer korpalski and his partner were responding to a radio call of a man with a gun on ditman in tacony. they heard the description of the suspect and they

remembered seeing that suspect about a block back. when they turned around and spotted him at mcgee and torresdale police say the suspect immediately opened fire. korpalski and three other officers shot back. korpalski was grazed in the head. the police commissioner was here at the hospital earlier visiting and says this unfortunately is a danger faced by officers all too often. >> pretty brazen criminals and our officers, that's what we do. we send them in harm's way. we put them in the toughest areas to go after people causing harm in our community and it's one of the risks that's inherent being a police officer, it's unfortunate but our people are well trained and prepared. >> reporter: the officers from the 15th district, he's married, he's a father of a three week old baby. as is protocol when an officer fires a weapon, internal affairs is investigating and the district attorney will review this case. we're live at einstein medical center, katherine scott channel 6 "action news." >> katherine thank you for that live report. developing this morning the national guard was on hand

in ferguson, missouri overnight ready to respond to any violent outbursts. "action news" reporter erin o'hearn is live in our satellite center. she's been following this story and the developments from overnighter. good morning, erin. >> good morning, sharrie. tensions continue to rise in ferguson. there seems to be this inability to calm the violence. the saint louis suburb had its ninth night of unrest after teenage -- unarmed teenager michael brown was shot by a police officer back on august 9th in the streets of ferguson once again looking like a war zone. [gunfire] the night started off with peaceful protests but quickly spun out of control. it was reported that some members of the crowd started throwing rocks and molotov cocktails. police also confirmed that two people had been shot. one officer came under gunfire and two fires had been set at a business and an unoccupied residence. there were more than 30

arrests and police blaming the violence on a few criminals, not the majority of peaceful protester whose are on the streets in the name of michael brown. although police say they responded appropriately, some have a different take on how officials are attempting to quell the chaos. >> officer, what's going on. >> this area not safe to be here any. >> okay. are you moving the protesters media or what. >> everybody. >> i'm not going to see the tide turned against us and move in the favor of the police. now, that's not right. that's not right. we want to exercise our constitutional rights and act like we civilized and got some sense. >> now, police continue to defend themself saying that not one shot was fired despite many officers coming under heavy attack in the overnight hours. but ferguson once again out of control with fear and anger continuing to dominate the emotions in in city. sharrie, back to you. >> a lot of developments. erin thank you. and our coverage continues at 6abc.com.

there you will find more information on the independent autopsy of michael brown plus arresting photos of confrontations between protesters and police. and this is new video at 6 o'clock of an extremely close call in berks county. police say an entire guardrail shot through a car that crashed in muhlenberg township yesterday. all three people inside the vehicle survived without serious injuries. the driver who crashed -- who caused the crash on the warren street bypass will be cited for this incident. >> it's 6:08. and when it comes to car thieves looks like your dependable affordable family sedan may be more of a target than luxury models. maribel aber is live at the nasdaq in times square. good morning, maribel. >> reporter: hey, good morning, tam. well, a a pair of hondas top the list for the most stolen vehicles in the u.s. the accord was the number one target of thieves with almost 54,000 thefts last year. the civic was the second most

stolen vehicle while chevy's full size pick up came in third. the most stolen list is put together by the national crime insurance bureau. stocks moved higher as the low interest rates encouraged investors. a three time winner of the food network's cupcake wars is coming to philadelphia. arlene scavoni plans to open three locations in the city within the next two years. she was attract d to philadelphia from its historic significance and its culinary base of food december. speaking of foodies, tam and sharrie, you know what, can't seem to replicate your cheesesteaks anywhere. >> that's the point. you'll just have to come to philadelphia. that's only place you can get it. >> right. >> and good weather to be outside enjoying a cheesesteak. >> amoroso rolls, can't get them anywhere else. as we go in closer, you can see how we do have some of that rain down to the south by

cape may. not really a big issue right now. just a light sprinkle. doesn't look like will it last all that much longer. let's get you outside and we have the airport and sun is coming up. little bit of coastal cloud cover but that's not too bad. and sun starting to break through down the coast and of course here at the airport you can see things getting brighter as well. what about your numbers? well, 66 degrees in philadelphia right now. still just 55 degrees in allentown. and 61 degrees in reading. so, it is on the cool side this morning, particularly in the northern areas. 67 in wilmington. we actually have 70's right now down the shore in atlantic city, sea isle and over toward dover so warmer down to the south and everybody a little bit more humid than it was yesterday but not too bad right now with the sun still trying to make its way up above the horizon. satellite shows you that the rain down to the south is really breaking apart. this little bit of shower activity we have in cape may is going to swing out to the coast and out to sea and just

kind of evaporate over the next hour or so. not a big issue. we'll see sunshine across much of the region but eventually we'll see the mixing in of clouds just about everywhere. in allentown a bit more humid than yesterday. a warm lie of 84 degrees. on the beach, not a bad beach day. in the water in the mid 70's. mid 70's at noon on the beach itself and 80 degrees for a high. sun and clouds, warm, maybe feeling a little bit humid especially as you move inlands away from the actual boardwalk area, but not too bad with that nice warm ocean water to go in and take a dip in. sun and clouds, a bit humid today in philadelphia, a high of 84 degrees, so the temperatures very similar to yesterday but year just going to add a little bit more humidity. then it will be a little breezy to with an eight to 16 miles per hour wind. not enough to knock the hat off are head if you're wearing one but breezier than yesterday. here's how we get there today. 71 by 8:00, 78 i 11:00 a.m.:

for the phillies tonight muggy, partly cloudy. 79 for the first pitch, 72 in the ninth inning. then tomorrow if we see any precipitation, it's probably late in the day and out in the northern and western suburbs. just a slight chance of a pop-up shower or maybe a thunderstorm late tomorrow afternoon way out there in the north and west. your exclusive accuweather 7-day, 84 today, sun and clouds, a bit more humid than yesterday. warm and humid tomorrow, 85 with that slight chance of a late day northern and western thunderstorm. and then thursday when we got clouds and a shower possible, there will be some sun breaking through at times. the high is 80. at night the eagles are at home. for that preseason 6abc contest, 78 degrees at the start of the game and 73 toward the end. muggy with a shower. hopefully the birds can get it altogether against those pittsburgh steelers. and then friday mostly cloudy with a lingering shower, although i could see some sunshine returning later in the day as the system moves away from us. and that sets us up for a gorgeous weekend. we're going to go upper 70's for saturday and sunday. make your plans.

>> welcome back. time 6:15. if you're just joining, we're following a breaking story. a philadelphia police officer has been shot in the line of duty. it happened early this morning in the tacony section. police say they shot and killed the man who opened fire on them. our katherine scott will have a live update on this story ahead at 6:30 a.m. >> let's go on over to karen rogers. she's taking a live look at what's going on with your traffic. good morning. >> good morning. we've got an accident involving a motorcycle here and this is on the ramp from i-95 northbound to 291 for the platt bridge and you might remember we were looking at the scene earlier. we saw a number of fire crews on the scene, emergency workers. we still have police. the fire crews have left a tow truck out here right now. there's a motorcycle involved and it is partially blocking that ramp and you want to expect some slowing on i-95 northbound approaching 291. so, these are the main lanes of i-95 which are opened and moving fine. so, this is the ramp to the platt bridge that's causing the problem right now so watch for that one.

keeping a live look on that. and meanwhile we have a new issue here, debris on the roadway right on the pennsylvania turnpike eastbound at valley forge so watch for that in the right lane. northeast extension northbound between lansdale and quakertown, we've got construction blocking the right lane. the southbound construction there has cleared. let's go back to the tacony section. you've been talking about this overnight shooting and it's still impacting your morning commute. we're looking live right now torresdale avenue. we've got portions of torresdale blocked. we see police on the scene with this. we can see the crime scene tape still blocking torresdale avenue between disston and hellerman. stick to frankford as your alternate to avoid that portion of torresdale that's shut down. this is also affecting ditman and mcgee. we've got portions of those roads blocked as well. three different streets blocked right now in tacony with -- involving this overnight shooting and police still on the scene. satellite 6 and action radar showing no weather related problems affecting your morning commute. you're seeing little sprinkles down to the south and parts of southern delaware and cape may counties so you may want to

watch for that. for the rest of us it's dry. it's a day that's a bit more humid. you feel a little bit of a change out there today but a decent high of 84 degrees with sunshine and clouds, tam. >> okay, thank you, karen. california police have found the body of a missing pregnant woman at the bottom of a mine shaft in the mojave desert. 19-year-old erin corwin was reported missing by her husband a u.s. marine back on june 28th. authorities have charged corwin's lover, christopher lee in the murder. police say the two were neighbors and that they were having an affair. corwin was last seen heading to joshua national park where police believe she was going to meet lee. lee was recently honorably discharged from the marines and moved with his family to alaska. >> in tech news this morning microsoft puts a major systems update on hold. here's abc's devon dwyer. >> in today's tech bites more broken windows for microsoft. the software giant pulled its august update for windows after users reported crashes in that notorious blue screen of death. users are recommended to

all morning. there we can see one police officer on the scene and we still see fire trucks on the scene. we had police right here that have left the scene so we're seeing more traffic snake around there but they still have this portion of torresdale blocked. it had been looking like maybe they were about to clear it but i still see police and a fire truck on the scene. we have portions of ditman and mcgee avenue also shut down right now with this accident involving an overnight shooting right now in tacony. an accident on i-95 northbound on the ramp as you exit off 291 for the platt bridge has cleared so some better news there. we see i-95 northbound, that is cleared. the delay is gone as well. it was starting to back up a little bit but we're moving better. we've got debris on the road on the pennsylvania turnpike. look for it eastbound blocking the right lane at valley forge. it's been out there a little bit but they still haven't picked that one up and an accident in trenton mercer county right on the ramp from 29 northbound to 129. that ramp is blocked. you've got to exit off for cass street instead if you're heading there in trenton, tam. >> okay, thank you, karen. let's go back to a story

sharrie, back to you. >> erin thank you for that latest of what's happening in ferguson. president obama is calling for a review of local police departments in the wake of the unrest in missouri. currently departments do receive grants that allow them to obtain heavy artillery from the pentagon. but critics are concerned weapons meant for the battlefield do not long on -- belong on city streets. >> a medical breach. community health systems claims that chinese hackers stole personal data on 4.5 million patients. they have names, social security numbers, addresses and known -- phone numbers. hospital officials say anyone who was treated or referred there by a doctor in the past five years is affected. the hospitals in our area include easton, chestnut hill hospital, pottstown, phoenixville, brandywine, jennersvilleemorha,ittle muggi f

>> welcome back. we continue to follow a breaking story. a philadelphia police officer has been shot in the line duty in tacony overnight. police say a gunman opened fire on them forcing officers to return shots killing the suspect. the officer involved is now in stable condition and will be getting you a live update at 6:55. >> time now to take a look at 6:55. this morning. hi, karen, what's happening. >> we just had torresdale avenue reopen. that had been shut down all morning because of that overnight shooting so torresdale avenue reopened. police have left the scene right there so that's some better news at least when you're traveling out and around out in the tacony section. staying on the big picture right here we have some slow speeds on i-95. we're looking at about the betsy ross bridge to girard, maybe about 24 miles an hour at times so kind of jamming up

at that point southbound on i-95. northbound on i-95 at 291 that accident that we had involving a motorcycle that was out there blocking part of the ramp to 291 and the platt bridge, that has cleared so things are moving a little bit better right there. you can see speeds like 18 miles an hour on the schuylkill expressway. we can go live right now and show you what it looks like. this is your eastbound traffic right near conshohocken. pretty jammed from the blue route to the curve, so you want the watch for that. no accident on the schuylkill, it's just a slow go right there. we do have that accident, though in bala cynwyd and that one is just coming in to us right now so watch for that in belmont avenue and old belmont avenue so an accident just coming in right there. let's take you to the maps and stay here in trenton. this is mercer county, the ramp from 29 northbound to 129 is blocked. we've got an accident out here in trenton that's still causing a problem. stick to the cass street exit instead because you can't exit off at 129. and in gloucester county, new jersey, right on the newapproacs for 322, we still have
