and a very good monday morning, i'm jeffrey kofman. >> and i'm brandi hitt. we begin in napa, california, taking stock from the most powerful earthquake in 25 years. >> this magnitude 6 quake struck at the heart of california wine country, making buildings uninhabitable in the downtown. and thousands of barrels of wine spilled. and homes badly damaged. >> it was 3:20 a.m. sunday and lasted 10 to 20 seconds. tahman bradley is at the center of all the damage. he joins us now with more. >> reporter: dan and brandy, good morning. it was a quake, 20 seconds of terror. look what it did to these mobile homes.

everyone we talked to said this was the worst earthquake they can remember. >> it's an earthquake. >> reporter: the 6.0 hit in the heart of california's wine country, the strongest in 20 years, it jolts thousands from their beds. >> there were some explosions and it was burning. and everybody was out in the street. >> reporter: the tremors were so powerful, they ruptured gas lines and sparked fires in this mobile home park. four homes were destroyed as fire fighters struggled to put out the blaze. >> we had a major water main break outside the mobile home park. >> reporter: the quake caused bricks to crumbling off of historic downtown buildings and roads buckled. after shocks continue. >> the building is going to collapse. >> reporter: napa is wine country. bottles from several hundred dollars each tossed around in the quake. one managed to escape relatively

unscathed, and the entire vintage is in these tanks, it could be a total loss without power. >> we are going to try to get a generator. >> reporter: governor jerry brown declared a state of emergency, hundreds spent the night without power and water. the impact here could have been so much worse. so far 200 people are treated more minor injuries, mostly cuts and bruise and two remain in critical condition. >> what impact did that have ant grape harvest going on right now? >> reporter: not too much of an impact because the wine harvest is just getting started. it was supposed to start today. they're going to push it back a couple days, it's not going to impact the process of making the wine. the wine-tasting rooms are open across the city. that's very important, tourists coming in. because wine is a $13 billion

later this morning. kirk hawkins, abc news, st. louis. >> thank you. an american journalist held hostage for two years in syria is on his way home. peter theo curtis was released yesterday in a deal worked out by the government of qatar. his kidnapping was never made public. he was handed over to u.n. peace keepers in gaza last night and then to the u.s. officials. the parents of james foley have released a letter they say their son wrote in captivity. he was being held with 17 other hostages, he said, and passed the time by discussing movie, sports and trivia and playing games made of scraps found in their jail cell. they were fed daily and given tea and coffee. foley was killed last week by terrorists. a sony executive was the

target of a prank that made a flight land in phoenix. passenger john smedley got a tweet from hackers calling themselves lizard squad warning of explosives on the plane. nothing was found on board. passengers then boarded another jet to continue on to san diego. we are tracking tropical storm cristo barks al, could have 8 inches of rain, and then expected to strengthen off the coast of the u.s. but may generate rough surf along beaches. it's being blamed for one death so far. and one structure so far disarrayed by a fast-moving fire in california. the town of weaverville is threatened. schools in the area will be closed today due to the high fire danger. time for a look at the
