fight against islamic militants in syria. >> the associated press saying surveillance flights have begun indicating air strikes could be next inside the war-torn country. a significant step toward military action in syria. this morning, president obama has authorized surveillance flights over the country in what could be a warm-up for air strikes against isis, the jihadist group fighting government forces there. >> i've been involved in the middle east for nearly 50 years and i've never seen anything like this. >> reporter: the administration has long resisted military operations in syria, a country involve advantaged by a three-year civil war. but that approach appears to be shifting. following the murder of american jesse kinch james foley at the hands of isis. >> one potential target, the northern syrian city of raqqah. >> it's the safest territory that currently exists. >> reporter: by analyzing the foley execution tape experts believe this is where foley was

one knows what route he was taking. >> another shark scare for the people on one massachusetts beach. swimmers ordered out of the water after a large great white was spotted near the shore actually a shark sighting near plymouth rock is relatively unusual. they prefer the waters off cape cod where they hunt seals. the beach is now open, though. meanwhile, this man in virginia is telling a harrowing story of being attacked by a black bear. steven kirch baum and his dog henry were hiking when it happened. it all started when henry went after the bear and the two cubs. >> when i heard this crashing and look over there and see these two small cubs maybe 30 pounds apiece. she charged down the bank and bit my thigh and knocked me to the ground. >> well, henry then attacked the bear which gave kirchbaum time to fight it off hitting it with a rock and walking back to the car and drove to a nearby market

for help. kirchbaum suffered cuts to his arms, legs and torso. they're both expected to be fine and despite troops being set he's still not caught. a high-speed crash ended in an arrest august caught on video. the man driving the black ford seen here sped through city streets on the wrong side of the road merged on to the 101 freeway and exited. his chase ending with a crash or more of a little bit of a bump coming up here. officer has to drag him out of the vehicle, there's the bump. the whole chase was reportedly triggered by police trying to pull him over for what, speeding. >> also from california this morning the story of remarkable bravery. the hero is number 6 there, usc defensive back josh shaw. when he saw his 7-year-old nephew struggling in the pool he jumped from a second story balcony landing on concrete. shaw then crawled into the pool and dragged the child to safety. he injured both ankles.
