fight against islamic militants in syria. >> the associated press saying surveillance flights have begun indicating air strikes could be next inside the war-torn country. a significant step toward military action in syria. this morning, president obama has authorized surveillance flights over the country in what could be a warm-up for air strikes against isis, the jihadist group fighting government forces there. >> i've been involved in the middle east for nearly 50 years and i've never seen anything like this. >> reporter: the administration has long resisted military operations in syria, a country involve advantaged by a three-year civil war. but that approach appears to be shifting. following the murder of american jesse kinch james foley at the hands of isis. >> one potential target, the northern syrian city of raqqah. >> it's the safest territory that currently exists. >> reporter: by analyzing the foley execution tape experts believe this is where foley was

killed and where three remaining hostages might be held. meantime, authorities believe they are closer to identifying foley's killer, advanced facial recognition experts created this likeness of the possible killer clean slaven and with a mustache. top syrian officials said any u.s. air strikes would be considered an act of aggression. american jesse kinch freed by islamic militants in syria will be heading home soon. peter theo curtis has spoken to his mother by telephone from israel. nancy curtis in turn talked to abc news and isn't sure when she'll see theo but she'll try to be patient. >> when something like this happens, you shut down, you live in the present. you get through each day, each 15 minutes. i don't look back. i don't look forward. i deal with things as they come. and i'm still in that mode.

earthquake sunday. the damage could top a billion dollars. >> probably the most severe earthquake that's happened to the napa wine industry maybe in decades. >> reporter: dozens of homes and buildings were destroyed or have been ruled too unstable to enter. >> we want to make sure the safety level increases and people aren't going near buildings that have -- where there's a threat debris may fall. >> reporter: have surveillance video from a music store captures that terrifying moment the quake struck. >> honestly i thought i was going to die. >> reporter: more than 200 injured including 13-year-old nicholas dillon hit by falling debris. >> he jolted upwards to reach for his friend, yell his name and as he was crawling away, with the shaking, the bricks fell on him. he has multiple fractures to his pelvis. >> reporter: with the threat of more aftershocks this week, many are calling for an early warning system. here's how it works, when an earthquake happens the waves that cause damage travel from the epicenter at the speed of sound. but sensors near the epicenter

that detect earthquakes can send alerts much faster at the speed of light. that early warning could give up to 40 seconds' notice before a tremblor. enough to stop a train from leaving a station or stop surgery in a hospital. overnight crews continued searching for gas leaks and w k working to repair water pipes. there are house of people still waiting for their tap water to come back on. brandi and dan. >> okay, tahman bradley live for us in napa, california, tahman, thank you. a young life cut short has been laid to rest in ferguson, missouri. thousands of mourners turned out for the emotional funeral of 18-year-old michael brown shot to death by a police officer minutes after allegedly robbing a convenience store. that shooting sparked more than two weeks of rabelly charged protests. a grand jury is now looking into whether to file charges against officer darren wilson. turning to the weather now, chicago will be sweating through another day of its august heat wave. the mercury has been hovering around 90 degrees, but the high humidity is boosting the heat

index to near 110 degrees. officials are recommending taking it easy, staying hydrated and, of course, getting that exercise in early before the day heats up. cooler temperatures unfortunately aren't expected until at least tomorrow. much farther south cristobal has strengthened into a hurricane in the atlantic with 75-mile-per-hour winds as a tropical storm, cristobal flooded communities across the caribbean killing at least three people. it's projected northeastern patt of the u.s. mainland. time now for a look at the nation's weather. there is going to be heavy rain falling over the four corners states with the band extending across the midwest into the great lakes. some areas could see 3 to 4 inches with flash flooding. >> that triple digit heat wave is continuing in the great plains, the east coast heats up to the 80s, 80s and 90s up up and down the west coast. it's not just the airlines sneaking in extra fees. how hotels now are making an

marie churning off the mexican coast. its waves expected to batter the southern california coastline with waves as high as 25 feet. officials are discouraging all but the most experienced surfers from hanging ten on the huge surf. marie is not expected to make landfall but track along the coast. how it will affect the roads, heavy rains in the four corners states will cause flooding conditions as a system stretches across the midwest into the great lakes. roads will also be wet across the gulf coast all the way down to florida. >> and if you're taking to the skies airport delays are possible in phoenix, denver, and salt lake city. this morning, a search has been mounded for a missing california man who finished his summer job in idaho and was driving back to school at the university of montana. >> 21-year-old lucious rob by was seen in banks, idaho en route to missoula after fini finishing up his job as a river guide. >> his summer job supervisor said he planned on camping somewhere along the way but no

one knows what route he was taking. >> another shark scare for the people on one massachusetts beach. swimmers ordered out of the water after a large great white was spotted near the shore actually a shark sighting near plymouth rock is relatively unusual. they prefer the waters off cape cod where they hunt seals. the beach is now open, though. meanwhile, this man in virginia is telling a harrowing story of being attacked by a black bear. steven kirch baum and his dog henry were hiking when it happened. it all started when henry went after the bear and the two cubs. >> when i heard this crashing and look over there and see these two small cubs maybe 30 pounds apiece. she charged down the bank and bit my thigh and knocked me to the ground. >> well, henry then attacked the bear which gave kirchbaum time to fight it off hitting it with a rock and walking back to the car and drove to a nearby market

for help. kirchbaum suffered cuts to his arms, legs and torso. they're both expected to be fine and despite troops being set he's still not caught. a high-speed crash ended in an arrest august caught on video. the man driving the black ford seen here sped through city streets on the wrong side of the road merged on to the 101 freeway and exited. his chase ending with a crash or more of a little bit of a bump coming up here. officer has to drag him out of the vehicle, there's the bump. the whole chase was reportedly triggered by police trying to pull him over for what, speeding. >> also from california this morning the story of remarkable bravery. the hero is number 6 there, usc defensive back josh shaw. when he saw his 7-year-old nephew struggling in the pool he jumped from a second story balcony landing on concrete. shaw then crawled into the pool and dragged the child to safety. he injured both ankles.
