and a good friday morning to you. i'm brandi hitt. >> and i'm dan kloeffler. we do begin this morning with the latest u.s. response to the brutal threat posed by isis. the islamic terror group releasing this video of about 150 syrian soldiers stripped to their underwear, but the white house is clearly trying to lower the emotional response to this kind of propaganda. tahman bradley. >> reporter: a surprising admission from president obama who just days ago ordered surveillance flights over syria to identify possible isis targets. >> the suggestion seems to have been that we're about to go full scale on an elaborate strategy for defeating isil. i don't want to put the cart before the horse. we don't have a strategy yet. >> reporter: with that the president made clear military action against isis in syria is not imminent, even though the u.s. has already targeted the brutal terror group inside iraq. >> i want to make sure everybody

is clear on what we're doing now, because it is limited. >> reporter: there obama's comments immediately drew fire from republican critics who said the president doesn't fully understand the threat posed by isis which is holding american hostages. isis stunned the world last week releasing this gruesome execution video of american journalist james foley and terror is not its only tool. isis is sophisticated and well funded with a real army fighting for territory inside iraq. secretary of defense hagel describes the threat from isis as imminent to u.s. interests in iraq and elsewhere. despite that warning the president is urging patience. he says the u.s. is trying to build a coalition of middle east countries to battle isis. brandi and dan. >> tahman bradley, thank you so much live in washington for us. disturbing new details about the cap tippett of hostage james foley. "the washington post" reports this morning that foley was tortured during the two years he was held by islamic militants.

"the post" reports he and three others were waterboarded several times. waterboarding is the notorious technique used by the cia in questioning suspects after 9/11. now to the other major crisis facing the white house. ukraine has accused russia of invasion entering its territory with tank, artillery and troops and nato says at least 1,000 russian troops are in the country. abc's hamish macdonald explains why the russian move is such a threat to ukraine. >> reporter: russia already annexed crimea back in march and if rebel forces push further west, russia might secure a strategically important land corridor all the way to the black sea. >> in response to that president obama is blaming vladimir putin for lying about those military moves. comedian joan rivers is said to be resting comfortably in a new york hospital this morning. she went into cardiac arrest in a doctor's office after throat surgery. the 81-year-old rivers has been in show business for half a

century and all but invented red carpet commentary criticizing what the rich and famous are wearing at major events. still keeping a jam-packed schedule of stand-up comedy dates. rivers appeared healthy the night before she was hospitalized and this picture was taken wednesday night in new york city at a press event for her new book. rivers' daughter melissa released a statement saying "i want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother. we ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers." >> the high surf that has been pounding california has peaked. the waves aren't as high anymore but there are still dangerous rip currents along the california coastline. lifeguards have made hundreds of rescues in the past week. the rip currents and the big waves were caused by a tropical storm in the pacific now falling apart. heavy rain in lubbock, texas, left one motorist stranded nearly underwater when his water was swept up by fast-moving currents. a fire department crew had to use a ladder truck and basket to

pull him from that sinking car and eventually get him on to dry land. there is a lot more wet weather ahead for that lubbock area. >> it is not the only spot, unfortunately, bracing for storms over the long holiday weekend. accuweather meteorologist jim dickey has the forecast. >> good morning, brandi and dan. tracking two systems causing issues here headed through the holiday weekend. the first bringing storms eastward through saturday, sunday on towards our labor day moves towards the eastern seaboard. the second, that's going to spark widespread severe weather especially sunday as it moves its way into the northern plains from the midwest cities from fargo, minneapolis, keep an eye to the sky. talking large hail, even dangerous tornadoes. brandi and dan, back to you. >> all right, jim, thank you for that. a volcano in iceland is now erupting causing concerns on both sides of the atlantic. hundreds of earthquakes have rocked this area and some lava is pouring out of a fish sure. iceland has just issued a red alert. that is the highest for airline flights near the volcano. four years ago air traffic to

and from europe was disrupted by ash spewing from another volcano in iceland. also another volcano affecting flights in the southern hemisphere after a significant eruption, an ash cloud in papua new guinea. it is 11 miles high. australia's qantas airlines is routing flights around it. some local residents have evacuated and others are told to stay indoors. an eruption from that destroyed a town 20 years ago. the might of the f-1 that crashed in virginia was killed in the accident. the fighter jet en route to new orleans crashed in a remote mountainous area wednesday. the pilot belonged to the 104th fighter wing of the massachusetts air national guard. the nfl is announcing a tough new policy against domestic violence and includes a six-game suspension for a first offense and lifetime ban for the second and applies not just to players but to all nfl personnel including owners.
