the captured syrian soldiers some 150 are stripped to their underwear forced to march across the desert after isis fighters, their black flags flying took control of a syrian air base. a short time later the video shows them lying dead executed but president obama is clearly trying to tamp down the emotional response to scenes like this and the execution of james foley. a strategy for dealing with the terror group in syria will take time, he said, thursday. >> the suggestion seems to have been that, you know, we're about to go full scale on an elaborate strategy for defeating isil. i don't want to put the cart before the horse. we don't have a strategy yet. >> reporter: a stark admission since the threat of isis has increased at an astonishing rate in the last year seizing large swaths of territory in iraq while establishing a safe haven

in nearby syria. the foley execution prompting the president to authorize spy planes over syria just this week, but president obama is now making clear that military action in syria is not imminent. >> i want to make sure everybody is clear on what we're doing now, because it is limited. the options that i'm asking for from the joint chiefs focuses primarily on making sure that isil is not overrunning iraq. >> reporter: but the president's own secretary of defense says the threat from isis is imminent to every interest we have and not just in iraq, anywhere, david. >> martha, as you know we were talking about this. i was just back from the syrian border in lebanon documenting the children, the refugees. we'll have that on "world news tonight" next week but these skirmishes even there, any concern about this message to isis, to the world that the president doesn't have a

strategy yet. >> reporter: well, there is, indeed. you know, the president did say he does not yet have a strategy for syria and that is creating a lot of concern given that isis has been gaining strength for years now, david. >> all right, martha raddatz with us this morning, martha, thanks as always. lara. now to joan rivers. the comedy icon rushed to a hospital here in new york city on thursday after she reportedly stopped breathing during a procedure on her vocal chords. this morning her daughter melissa is asking for prayers and abc's linsey davis is in mt. sinai hospital with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lara. joan rivers remains here at mt. sinai hospital this morning. she is said to be resting comfortably. this morning, legendary comedian and television icon joan rivers remains in the hospital. authorities tell abc news rivers was rushed to mt. sinai hospital in new york city after going into cardiac arrest at a new york medical clinic. tmz reporting rivers was having

a procedure involving her vocal chords at the clinic. just hours earlier the emmy winning tony nominated star had entertained crowds at a manhattan theater. audience members telling abc news, she was as vibrant as ever. rivers' daughter melissa seen here at l.a.x. rushing to catch a flight to be by her mother's side. >> we're all praying for your mother, melissa. >> thank you. >> reporter: upon her arrival in new york melissa released this statement "i want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother. she is resting comfortably and is with our family. we ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and pray prayers." the 81-year-old rivers had been busy at work this week. >> welcome back to "the fashion police vma and emmy awards special." >> reporter: here on her show "fashion police" recapping looks with her famously colorful commentary. >> lance armstrong, if you are watching, this is how you rock a onesie. >> reporter: rivers made the

round to promote "diary of a mad diva" debuted at number 7 on the new york new york best-seller's list and had no plans of slowing down with 26 appearances scheduled between now and november 22nd. a woman with endless energy and drive as she told david muir in 2009. >> if you don't do what you want to do, you're a fool. >> reporter: rivers was expected to perform her comedy routine tonight in new jersey. that has, of course, been postponed. during her act wednesday night she even joked about her mortality living up to her promise that she would never retire. lara? >> all right, linsey, thank you. more insight from abc's dr. jen ashton. good morning, jen. a lot of people are wondering how does something like this happen during a routine procedure? >> well, specifically we have to remember that joan rivers is an incredible example of vitality and anti-aging and longevity. however, in general whenever you have someone undergoing a

procedure on their throat, their upper airway there is sedation and anesthesia involved then you take a patient in their 80s, there are absolutely risk, most of those risks are related to the anesthesia process but you can have a low oxygen situation which then can compromise brain function, breathing function and cardiac or heart function. >> yeah, lots of concerns. given the severe weather, the possibilities, is it typical to have this kind of surgery at a medical center versus a hospital? >> absolutely. these surgery centers are outpatient facilities commonplace today staffed with board certified anesthesiologists but make no mistake about it when you have an 80-year-old patient on the table they can act their age very quickly and those an the anesthesiologists need to be able to respond to an emergency. >> all right, dr. jennifer ashton, we thank you and all of us wishing joan the very best. >>ing for joan rivers, a great friend to "good morning america" and abc news. the severe weather this morning, of course, flooding and

heavy rain and volcanoes, ginger, is also tracking that action. >> where we want to begin, the pictures are just stunning especially for the volcano in papua new guinea. let's see the pictures there to some 60,000 feet that smoke and ash plume has gone, yes, some flights there diverted but then our concern goes to iceland because in this right here, this video you're seeing they're flying over the lava fields and they're most concerned about the volcano. if that lava field reaches close we could see an eruption. that is far from our understanding quite yet but here's what we do know. cristobal, the hurricane still will eventually weaken and bring quite a bit of rain and wind to parts of iceland. the good news, a high pressure system parked over europe, if this thing blows a lot of that plume would be pushed to the north. there's the small no-fly zone but 13 earthquakes in the last 7 day, it could end up if it does go something like 2010. >> we all remember what happened last time.

ginger, thanks. right over to amy robach with rising tensions in ukraine >> that's right. good morning, everyone. we begin with the breaking news from the crisis in ukraine. that country accusing russia of launching a full-scale invasion. this morning nato is saying these satellite images show more than 1,000 russian troops operating inside ukraine. moscow has denied sending troops. at this hour heavy fighting continues near a strategic port city. president obama thursday directly blamed russia for the violence hinting the u.s. may impose more economic penalties on moscow but ruling out u.s. military action. a chaotic scene on a highway north of the washington state border after a tour bus carrying nearly 60 people crashed. most of the people on board were injured. at least five of them critically. the bus hit a median and then flipped over. well, malaysia airlines which has suffered two recent air disasters announced massive cutbacks saying this morning it

will cut 6,000 jobs. many of its flights virtually empty. police in utah say they have solved the cold case killing of an elderly woman thanks in part to some lego toys. they recently received a tip from the wife of a death row inmate. they ran fingerprints on legos found at the murder scene from 1978 and there was a match to the suspect's then 5-year-old son. after reviewing all the evidence they now believe that john john sansing left his son playing at the crime scene while he carried out the attack. several police officers in south florida are under scrutiny after an investigation by our abc station in miami. the officers are seen in this video with their emergency lights flashing. witnesses say one officer even blocked traffic at a busy intersection. wplg reports the officers' destination was a bakery where a video then shows them enjoying break fashion. finally this morning, some presidential critics are saying,

yes, we tan. social media bursting into a frenzy seemingly very upset over president obama's decision to wear a light tan suit at yesterday's news conference. more than a thousand tweets coming in. fashion supporters arguing, you know what, it's not labor day yet so the lighter color does pass the fashion test. but one critic complaining and there you see in this meme, the president looking more like a used car salesman. >> oh, come on. >> if he has any good deals on a preowned hyundai. >> it's summer. >> it is summer? we have used car salesmen on the phone right now. >> strongly disagree. >> so you guys like the tan suit. >> i think he was not really thinking about the color suit he was wearing. >> probably concerned about some other things. >> yeah. >> he's not the president of sears. >> that's right. >> i like a tan suit. i'm just saying. >> all right. thanks, amy. now to another case of turbulence on a flight between passengers. this is the second time in a

week a flight was diverted because of a fight over seat space. abc's david kerley has this story. >> reporter: a hospital room served as a courtroom where frenchman edmond alexandre heard the charges of interfering with the crew on a flight from miami to paris on wednesday. he became upset when the seat in front of him was reclined complaining his diabetes made it problematic. the flight attendant tried to calm him but according to the charging documents he became more agitated following him and grabbing his arm that led to the flight mar surveillance shals b cover. >> he had a right to complain. he had a right to say, this is hurting me. >> reporter: just days earlier on another flight a woman threw a cup of water in the face of a passenger behind her because he used a pair of these, knee defenders to keep that seat from lee cleaning. both flights diverted. a rash of unruly passenger incidents. >> it's not your imagination. seats are actually getting smaller on planes today.

airlines are trying to pack in more passengers in order to be more profitable. >> reporter: what's different in wednesday's incident federal air marshals jumped into action. their job is to stop a terrorist threat. i got a firsthand look donning protective gear for a simulated attack but a terrorist is different than an unruly passenger. those federal air marshals are trained, their call whether they break their cover. they felt the flight attendant was threatened so they interv e intervened. we don't hear that very often. >> live in washington, the pictures are incredible. thank you. we'll turn to the nfl finally cracking down on domestic violence. the league coming under fire earlier this year for what was considered a light suspension for one star player. now the commissioner is apologizing for that decision and making sure it never happens again. abc's mara schiavocampo with the story this morning. >> reporter: this video posted by tmz earlier this year appears to show baltimore ravens running back ray rice dragging his then

fiancee out of a casino elevator. just moments after allegedly hitting her so hard she is knocked unconscious. rice is now participating in an intervention program to avoid prosecution of an assault charge and possible jail time. and the nfl suspended him for two games. but this morning, major changes to the nfl's domestic violence policy. in a memo to everyone who works for the league, commissioner roger goodell announcing a first offense will lead to a six-game suspension. a second offense, banishment from the nfl. >> for the league to announce this so quickly shows how much they care about this topic. how aware they are that they are leaders, that the nfl is expected to uphold these high standards. >> reporter: the nfl faced fierce criticism after rice's suspension, many arguing the punishment was far too little and that the league wasn't taking domestic violence

seriously enough. now, goodell taking a hard line. writing "domestic violence and sexual assault are wrong. they have no place in the nfl." for "good morning america," mara schiavocampo, abc news, new york. all right, mara, thank you. now we turn to tony stewart. he will be back on the track this weekend. it'll be the first time since his car struck and killed a fellow driver during a race three weeks ago. abc's gio benitez has the story. >> reporter: for the first time since nascar superstar tony stewart struck and killed a fellow driver, the three-time sprint cup series champion now announcing he's heading back to the track. >> i expected tony to come back. i didn't necessarily expect him to come back as quickly as he is. >> reporter: overnight nascar giving him the green flag to race at this sunday's nascar sprint cup series in atlanta. another first, stewart is set to speak publicly today for the first time since the tragic death of kevin ward jr. three

weeks ago. their two cars colliding on the track during a sprint car feature in new york. ward getting out of his car midrace pointing his finger apparently at stewart before stewart's car strikes and kills him. stewart dropping out of three races since keeping his silence other than a statement saying "there aren't words to describe the sads in i feel." >> as part of the healing process, i think getting back inside the race car makes sense for tony stewart. >> reporter: while this wasn't a nascar race nascar has since implemented a new rule, drivers forbidden to leave their cars after an accident. off the racetrack police are still investigating ward's death. but say they have no evidence to support criminal intent by stewart. >> i think it would be very difficult for tony. there will be a lot of distraction and the distraction is going to be a really tall hurdle. >> reporter: nascar making it clear they are in constant contact with stewart's race team and will, quote, stay very close to this situation as stewart

on the side of the road and we reunited the new parents and the dispatcher who talked them through it for the very first time. >> oh, that's so nice. then we're going to go live to france this morning with all the details from brad and angelina's surprise wedding. how did they do that? how did they pull it off without anyone knowing for quite a few days. >> by the way, congrats, brad and angelina. finally married. i love it. we begin with the hpv -- retri retrial. they planted drugs in the car for the way they treated their son. cecilia vega with the story this morning. >> reporter: you're looking at a pta volunteer in tears on the stand in a southern california courtroom describing the moment police found a stash of drugs in her car. kelli peters coming face to face with the man accused of framing her by planting those drugs in a twisted plot of revenge.

the school worker so upset the trial had to be cut short for the day. authorities say this man kent easter allegedly tried to frame peters, a pta mom at his son's school by planting drugs in her car then calling the police on her. >> irvine police. >> i am concerned that one of the parent volunteers may be under the influence or use of drugs. >> reporter: prosecutors say these 911 calls were made by easter because he didn't like the way she treated his son at school. >> yeah, it looked like she had some pills or something. >> reporter: in 2011 police detained her for two hours and searched her home for more drugs finding nothing more. photos of those drugs shown in court thursday. this is easter's second trial in the case. the first jury deadlocking in november 11-1 in favor of convicting easter. he is now facing charges of false imprisonment by fraud or deceit. his wife, jill easter pleaded guilty last year to false

imprisonment and was sentenced to 120 days in jail. in opening statements easter's lawyer said it was his wife jill who planted the drugs telling the jury, jill was the operator behind the incident. if convicted, kent easter faces three years in prison. the trial continues next week with peters back on the stand. for "good morning america," cecilia vega, abc news, san francisco. >> cecilia, thank you. now to a utah dad who had to act as doctor helping his wife deliver their new baby boy in a parking lot after they realized they weren't going to make it to the hospital. the whole drama caught on 911 and abc's brandi hitt is here with all those happy details. good morning, brandi. >> this baby did not want to wait. mom and dad working together during such a stressful delivery with the help of a 911 dispatcher and a few items they just happened to have in their car. >> i see the head. >> baby benjamin norman anderson's dramatic entry in the world after his parents on the way to the hospital to deliver

she stopped breathing during throat surgery thursday and went into cardiac arrest. melissa rivers says her 81-year-old mother is resting comfortably. and airlines around the world are on alert because of a volcano that began erupting overnight in iceland. back in 2010 transatlantic flights were disrupped for a week because of the eruption. so far today no major problems. also overnight dramatic pictures of an eruption in southea southeast asia in papua new guinea, the ash cloud extending 11 miles. well, witnesses say it looked like a scene from a horror movie in one house in england. take -- what a family found in their spare bedroom. this is a wasp's nest on the bed. 5,000 of them lived there after flying flew an open window, the family, i'm going to guess doesn't use that room very much. at least no one sleeping this that bed. >> why would you say that? >> i think you might have noticed it before it got that

we want to do it. >> it was your little boy that inspired that. >> walked out on the porch, you have to hear the song to get the rest of it but walked out on the porch and squinted staring at the moon one night. i said what are you doing. he said, i i think i can see the flag and i said, that's the metaphor of all metaphors. >> you have to love that innocence and hopefulness and also "moonshine in the trunk" i love is sort of about the beginnings of nascar. >> yeah. >> tell us a little about that. >> most uniquely american thing i hi in the car world is that we have muscle cars because they outlawed alcohol which was the worst idea in the history of our country.
