he said it looked as it coker was getting it. he had a few great practices in a row, and then the scrimmage came, and coker did not play it well at all. sims played great. and seemed like coker never recovered from there. >> brian: yeah i think, you know, and mental toughness as a quarterback is one of the most important things. and so he had a tough go in the scrimmage. and then the problem is, the next two weeks at practice, it continued to affect him. and when you see that as a coach, you know, you don't feel real good about putting him in the game. you're going to have adversity in the game and through the course of the season. now coker is getting more comfortable. but too much thinking at the line of kraj aof scrimmage, and decision-making has been a problem. it's a little bit surprising that he had that issue in pre-season camp. >> dave: coker rest year in practice looked good pep he was the backup to jameis winston. he got in and then injured last

season. hurt his knee. but healthy now. third down and two. and henry, close to the first down. see where they spot it at the 34 yard line, the two inside backers, kwiatkoski is teaming up on the tackle. and tonkery. but there's something to be said for experience, how teammates respond to a guy in terms of leadership, and -- >> brian: yeah. >> dave: you know, obviously arm strength, accuracy, those things are important. but having an understanding of what you're seeing pre-snap and during the play, equally important, if not more. >> brian: there's a lot of interesting dynamics to this conversation. but the fact that blake sims put in the sweat equity. he has been unselfish for his four years at alabama.
7:02 pm
done everything the coaching staff asked him to do. and the teammates love him and follow him and go through a brick wall for him. but again, at the end of the day, can blake sims take you to an s.e.c. west championship, an s.e.c. championship and a national championship in the question is still unanswered. >> dave: i think the defense has to play better. >> brian: the defense certainly has to play better. and the special teams has to play better. b but, you know, i think he's earned another start. but they have to make a decision by the florida game. >> dave: and a fair catch made inside the 30 yard line by thompson. let's check in with robert in the studio. >> well, dave, clemson is wishing that todd gurley had made a fair catch on this kickoff return. after clemson scored back-to-back to take the lead, and gurley goes a hundred yards,

you don't get the extra credit. it's a game-tying kickoff return, tied on espn and later, mike gundy and oklahoma state, opening up against number one defending champ, florida state. it's 8:00 eastern, 5:00 pacific on abc. >> dave: great so see todd gurley healthy. one of the most explosive players in the country. trickett, and pulled in by smallwood. west virginia can score quick, but they would need points and then have to get the onside k k kick. two time-outs remauning. >> brian: they don't need a touchdown here. if it's fourth down, they need to kick a field goal. >> dave: trickett to the sideline, kevin white. and pushed out of bounds. stop the clock. 2:10 remaining in the half. west virginia with 390 yards of total offense. but, again, they have run 15 fewer plays than alabama. nick saban says they usually run 65, they have run 81 plays.
7:04 pm
trickett in trouble. sacked inside the 40 yard line. a breakdown of protection, and jonathan allen there to take down the quarterback. >> brian: jonathan allen is one of those young players in the front line for alabama that his coaching staff is excited about. 6'3", 275-pound sophomore. and he's got some quicks. >> dave: third down and 18. swing pass to white. he'll get a chunk of it back here. he won't go down. tackled inbounds so the clock continues to run. and it's fourth down. >> brian: need more urgency from clint trickett. you need to get going, only 1:20 left, you need the play called and get moving. >> greg: a. >> dave: and get to the 43 of alabama or the game's over. trickett, has to throw it short, and the tide will take over on
7:05 pm
downs. >> brian: i don't know if clint trickett knew it was fourth down. i think he took that sack, and i don't think that he knew that was fourth down. i don't know why he would throw the ball in the flat like that and get tackled. the game's over. you have to throw the ball past the sticks in that case right there. >> dave: overall, though, good showing by west virginia. not many expected them to be in the game. and so for dana holgorsen, even though it's a loss, at least there are a lot of positives for his football team going forward. and for alabama, we're going to get a look here at jake coker, finally. first rep of the night at quarterback. think he would hand the ball off. but at least he gets a few snaps. he's a mobile, alabama, native. same high school at a.j. mccarron. he has two years of eligibility left with alabama. and too many guys in the huddle. so a penalty flag. >> referee: illegal substitution
7:06 pm
on the offense, number 13. five yard penalty, first down. >> dave: that might have been ñ first rep for stewart tonight, and perhaps his last. blake sims had the one interception, no touchdown passes. but overall pretty good, right? for a first start? >> brian: with the amount of pressure on blake sims, yeah. smile, take a breath, you can exhale. there's a lot going on with that young man. a lot of butterflies in this game. and to come out with a victory, most important, number one. and number two is to put some things on tape. you know, the last time we saw blake sims was the spring game, and it was atrocious. to get the victory, and the numbers. he made some mistakes, they weren't the catastrophic type. he can be proud of the performance he had today. >> dave: first game for lane kiffin and nick saban working
7:07 pm
together. obviously no pre-season in college football. you have to work out the kinks in real live action. >> brian: it was interesting on the sideline. a lot more interaction than anticipated. >> dave: we didn't they we would see them as close together. and that'll do it. alabama wins it 33-23. t.j. yeldon had a couple of touchdowns on the ground. derrick henry had a score. both backs over 100 yards rushing. and a career-high for amari cooper, 12 catches and 130 yards. as blake sims wins his first start as the alabama quarterback. meanwhile, clint trickett threw for 361 yards and a touchdown. nick saban at halftime called
7:08 pm
his defense soft. we'll see what he has to say about his defense after tonight's win. coach saban is standing by with tom. >> tom: coach, a lot of positives, a lot of negatives if the first game tonight. how would you assess the performance of the football team over the course of four quarters? >> it is what it is, we are where we are. this gives an opportunity to improve on the things we need to improve on. did a lot of good things, but also a lot of things we need to do a lot of improving on. this will give the team and the coaches and everybody else a good idea of what we need to do in the future to become a better football team. >> as the course of the game went on, you had moments offensively where you were backed up, you allowed blake sims to take control of the offense. how do you feel he managed the game? >> he managed the game better without a huddle, all right and
7:09 pm
that's something we decide to the try. he did a better job of that. we couldn't do everything in the offense out you have that. we kind of shared it after that. i think blake settled down and played better in the second half even though he threw a pick. i thought he managed the game a lot better. >> good luck next week, coach. >> all right, thank you. >> florida atlantic next week, then southern miscellaneos, and date with a much-improved florida team and tuscaloosa. and the chick-fil-a kickoff game, alabama wins it. stay tuned, 8:00 eastern on abc, it's the cowboys classic, florida state and oklahoma state. for brian griese, tom luginbill, i'm dave pasch. so long from atlanta.
