and a very good monday morning. i'm dan clear ler alongside reena ninan. we begin with breaking news. weather extremes. wildfires growing over night in california. a powerful hurricane is coming ashore. >> that's right. hurricane odile bearing down on popular tourist areas. could threaten the u.s. within days. hurricane odile made land fall early this morning near the resort area of cabo san lucas. >> no, no, no, whoa! >> reporter: the national hurricane center in miami estimated the winds at 125 miles per hour. odile is churning up deadly surf and torrential rain. it's also triggered mass evacuations. mexican authorities have set up emergency shelters to hold up to

30,000 people. meantime, much further north, wildfires. fueled by blistering heat and drought-stricken brush are burning out of control in parts of california. near yosemite national park, the courtney fire has ripped through more than 300 acres, destroying 21 homes and threatening hundreds of other structures. >> we're see record low fuel mois churs. all the fuels are readily available to burn. as we all know in the valley, we have 100-degree temperatures we have been experiencing all week. they're aiding in the spread of the fire along with the winds we're getting. >> reporter: more than 1,000 people have been evacuated. that fire is only about 20% con tand. meantime, about 150 miles north, the king fire has grown to about 2500 acres in el dorado county. triggering manned doir evacuations. >> scary. we have our trailers hooked up

>> abc's tahman bradley live in washington. thank you, tahman. a tumultuous week in the nfl starts. a growing list of scandals with players' behavior off the air. the carolina panthers deactiv e deactivated greg hardy before the game today. a court convicted him in july. gave him a 60-day sentence. hardy has appealed the trial and will get another trial in november. one of the league's biggest stars turned himself in from child abuse charges. adrian peterson is accused of hitting his 4-year-old son with a branch. if convicted, he could face prison time. espn is reporting that ray rice is expected to appeal his suspension. rice was released by the ravens and suspended by the league after new video surfaced of him

knocking out his then fiance in an elevator. and calls for league commissioner roger goodell to step down are getting louder. a woman's advocacy group was behind banners in cleveland, san francisco, and new york that said blood dell must go. enterovirus 68 is now in the northeast. it's expected that before this disease has run its course, it will be in all parts of the country. it starts with cold-like symptoms but can escalate to trouble breathing. hillary clinton visited iowa sunday for the first time since she finished a disappointing third place in 2008 at the state caucuses. this time, she was there to attend the fund-raising steak-fry of retiring senator tom harken. she would on the say she's thinking about running in 2016.

golfer who nearly lost his hand this week end to a chain saw. greg norman posted this photo on instagram. he was can youing back trees at his south florida home when his left hand slipped into the teeth of a shane saw. cutting into his wrist. missing an artery by a fraction of an inch. he tweeted, working with a chain saw, be respectful of the unexpected. a power outage at six flags great adventure left some people briefly stuck on a number of rides. park officials say all guests were safely unloaded within 20 minutes and no one was injured. some rides resumed operations after a safety check. the outage is being blamed on a trance former. a hollywood actress is outraged after being handcuffed and talked to police. she was in django unchained.
