ndence from britain. >> citizens who did not want to break up the three century old union are celebrating today. >> on the other side, voters who wanted independence seen openly weeping in the streets, draped in the scottish flag. hamish mcdonald has the reaction. >> reporter: some pretty heartfelt reactions on both sides this morning. in the end, the result was fairly definitive. 55% of voters in scotland said that they wanted to remain part of the united kingdom. that's a large number of people who wanted to be independent. 1.6 million voters said yes to scottish independence. bitter divisions emerged, and they aren't sold necessarily just by this vote.

but leaders on both sides are saying that now that we've had this referendum, kscotland and the united kingdom must come together. >> is the independence movement dead? >> reporter: not necessarily. remember that during the campaign, british politicians made all sorts of promises to the scottish people if they remain part of the united kingdom. and both david cameron and the scottish nationalist leaders said they want to stick to the timetable to devolve more power to the scottish parliament. but there's a bigger question, the united kingdom will go through a big series of changes. it's not just the scots that want more localized power, the establish want it as well. how do you give lawmakers in england power, how do you give lawmakers in northern ireland and even wales to match the additional powers that the scots are getting. it's a complicated picture. the idea of independence, or more power, is not dead. >> everyone was watching around

charge of felony arson. the king fire is now 111 square miles, threatening more than 12,000 homes. the fire is only 12% contained. south of there, the remnants of hurricane odile are ravaging the southwest. texas is getting hit the hardest. a half a foot of rain, washing away cars. and in fact inside one of the cars, a sheriff's deputy in austin who is still missing this morning. >> we hold out a lot of hope that she's still clinging to a tree. the water was rushing in here really fast. one of the things she was doing was checking the low water crossings, making sure the citizens were safe. >> and using an infrared sensor today, and that area is expected to get more rain in the coming hours. and the baja peninsula is bracing for another bout of severe weather. hurricane polo has lost

strength. hit hard last week by hurricane odi odile, cabo san lucas, and polo will just brush past the area this weekend. meantime, as the massive cleanup continues in los ka boes, they are trying to restore law and order. residents are worried that their homes will be next. many residents have been banding together, building bonfires as they face a fifth day without power or running water and food is running low. and trying to figure out what drove a 51-year-old man to commit suicide and kill seven members of his family. he shot and killed his adult daughter and six grandchildren. ranging in age from 3 months to 11 years old. he spent time in prison after accidently shooting and killing his 8-year-old son on a hunting

trip 13 years ago. and a high speed chase that ended at airport where a man got lost in the crowd. officials halts all flights. surveillance camera caught this image of the suspect. and after a three hour search, he was in custody. a dozen flights were kaj canceled and scores were delayed. and jonathan dwyer was released from jail after domestic abuse charges. and he was put on the reserve non-injury football list. that means he can't play again this season. he still will be paid his base salary. dwyer is accused of assaulting his wife and 18-month-old son. >> you throw a shoe? >> i never hurt my son. >> they say he head butted his wife, breaking her nose. he can only return if cleared of all charges. and a new campaign against a

you're looking at the devastation brought on by the remnants of hurricane odile across the southwest. torrential rains triggering flash floods, washing away cars. some with the drivers still trapped inside, forcing some very dramatic rescues. rescuers had to rip the roof off one vehicle to pull the driver to safety. more rain is in the forecast unfortunately. today odile is causing problems across the southwest. triggering flood conditions from arizona to the gulf coast. roads will be wet from georgia down through florida. and across the upper midwest and great lakes area. headed to the airport, some delays almost certain in phoenix, houston and dallas. well, speaking of the airports. a flight from california to texas had to make a quick u-turn after heavy smoke filled the cabin. >> it was a terrifying incident on the jetblue light. and manually let down the oxygen

masks. the pilots turned around and went back to long beach, passengers evacuated down emergency slides with no major injuries. >> i was thinking about my son. so it was probably the best feeling i have had in my life today. it is definitely -- it makes you think about life. >> the pilots declared the emergency after they got an overheat warning for one of the two engines. they activated a fire sue pregnancy system in the engine. it's not clear if it was on fire. students are standing together as the search for one of their own continues. students held a vigil for hannah graham who's been missing for a week now. they are scanning surveillance for clues. a man in white shorts can be seen following her. he says he saw her with another man who is not seen on any of those surveillance tapes.

and an intensive manhunt in pennsylvania one week after a fugitive sniper killed a state trooper and injured another. the suspect, eric frein, now on the fbi's ten most wanted list. he's considered armed, dangerous and delusional. there's a $100,000 reward for his capture. they are combing eastern pennsylvania in the hunt for frein. and the heroic efrlts much two police officers. people on the scene were unable to get the man out of a burning car. they broke a car window and freed the 68-year-old man. he apparently had a medical emergency, passed out behind the wheel and slammed into the car in front of him. both were on fire. police on a quiet street in green bay, wisconsin, yesterday, after a neighbor reported a bear. the creature was making itself at home and walking from yard to yard. it took several doses of trang
