>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪ >> good morning. it's 5:00 a.m. on this wednesday, september 24th and we're following some breaking news. >> gunfire erupts on a philadelphia street overnight leaving a pregnant woman dead and a man wounded. leaving a pregnant woman dead warrants for three people in connection with the beating of a gay couple in center city. >> and accuweather is tracking some heavy rain. it will be moving in later today. >> you know what, dave murphy, my yard really could use it so let's find out a little bit more about that and karen rogers of course is watching track. good morning. >> i've had a few people asking me about that on twitter. hey, i want to put the seed down it's fall and we are going get some rain coming in. although it's going to be so heavy at times overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning that it might really kind of disturb any seeds you put down. 56 degrees in philadelphia, 49

right now in allentown. we have no rain yet out there so you're dry a little bit cool to start out your morning commute. and as we head out the door to get the car started or catch the bus look for 57 degrees by 6:00 a.m. and by 8:00 a.m., 60 degrees, partly cloudy and on the cool side. as we move through the day, the clouds increase but we're still mild and fairly comfortable. your high this afternoon is going to be that 75 and we'll hit that around 3 o'clock with clouds increasing moving out of the 60's early and back into the upper 60's by 6 o'clock. and here are the clouds on satellite and you can see how they're starting to well up from the south. we saw this a little bit yesterday but they're getting a bit more pron nounsd now in southern delaware and extreme south jersey. the larger system is beginning to produce heavy rain down in the carolinas and eventually this rain is going to move forth and overtake us. it looks like we'll probably start to get a little wet down at the shore and in southern areas late this afternoon. most of us will have to wait until later this evening for that rain to arrive. karen, tomorrow morning's commute does look pretty wet. details coming up -- in that

accuweather 7-day, okay. >> yeah, i'm just imagining what it will look like with tomorrow morning's commute being wet. we're dry right now but already problems. the last thing you want to hear about is an issue on 95 after yesterday but in southwest philadelphia this is i-95 by the airport, an accident where a vehicle ran into the guardrail. here we can see they've got police and penndot on the scene. looks like a tow truck here as well. has been they're going to be able to pull this out of here. all lanes opened no, delays but looks like the tow truck is going to be able to clear that accident. herely in montgomery county we've got an accident where a vehicle ran into a pole and this is on stump hill road right near green hill road. now, in carneys point in south jersey in salem county we've got an accident involving an overturned tractor-trailer blocking the left lane and center lane and it's right on the new jersey turnpike. this is southbound approaching the delaware memorial bridge so expect delays even though this happened in the overnight hours, i would stick to 295 southbound as your alternate. going outside live one more time, this is in camden. yet another problem, a water main break here blocking the

right lane. crews are making repairs. this is right on admiral wilson boulevard near baird boulevard so lots to watch for this morning, matt. >> okay, karen, thanks. this is breaking this morning, a double shooting overnight left a pregnant woman dead and her child also did not make it. the chuting on a philadelphia street also left a man wounded. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live in the olney section where the man hunter is on. katherine. >> and, matt, this is the second time in two weeks in philadelphia that a pregnant woman was shot and killed and as was the case in the last one, a baby girl was delivered and did not survive. a 26-year-old man remains in the hospital in critical condition. and you can see the crime scene unit remains on the scene here in olney at 20th and nedro. police have marked off 11 shell casings, broken glass, a cell phone and other evidence here. this shooting happened shortly before 1:00 a.m. and when police arrived they found both victims lying on the sidewalk next to a white chevy impala. and officers rushed them to

einstein. the 26-year-old man was shot in his back and leg. the 25-year-old woman was hit in the head, the arm and both legs. she was pronounced dead at the hospital at the 1:03 a.m. and she was eight months pregnant. doctors did an emergency delivery of a baby girl. they worked on that baby for more than an hour but she did not survive in the end. police don't know the motive yet. witnesses saw a man fleeing the scene and police believe there is some surveillance footage that could help in this investigation. >> fortunately we did find some businesses in the immediate area that do have exterior surveillance cameras so homicide detectives are on location trying to get a copy of those recordings and hopefully they can help us with this investigation. >> reporter: and back here live on the seen you can see the crime scene unit is out here. there is a white chevy impala nearby. the engine was running in the vehicle and police believe at least one of the victims was in the car when the shots were

fired. but again, they were found lying on the sidewalk. police are interviewing witnesses right now. they're also interviewing the 26-year-old man who was shot. he is in the hospital in critical condition but he is conscious and expected to survive. we are live in olney, katherine scott, channel6 "action news." >> katherine, thank you for that. and also happening today, the three suspects accused of beating a gay couple in center city are expected to turn themselves in. the philadelphia district attorney has filed charges against 24 year old kevin harrigan, philip williams and katherine knott. knot is the daughter of carl knott. the gay couple maintained they were attacked on the night of september 11th because of their sexual orientation. delaware state police have charged the driver of this overturned tour bus in connection with the death of two passengers. the bus turned over on the ramp from route 1 to route 13 in new castle on sunday. investigators say the driver gin leasow of flushing new york was speeding and lost control of the bus as it hit a

moderate curve. >> happening today, pennsylvania governor tom corbett is scheduled to sign the newly passed cigarette tax for philadelphia. the state senate voted 39 to 11 yesterday to approve a two dollars per pack tax hike on cigarettes in the city. the house approved the legislation on monday night. the philadelphia school district hopes the tax will pump $83 million of extra revenue into public schools over the next year. as you can imagine, some business owners and smokers are none too pleased. erin o'hearn will have a full report at 5:30 a.m. and happening today, the closed revel casino hotel goes on the auction block. a lawyer for the florida developer who made a $90 million bargain basement offer says other people have also made bids for the property. the resort cost $2.4 billion to build. meanwhile the city is responding to this year's layoffs. thousands of casino workers in atlantic city by reducing the city workforce. mayor don guardian says will he have to cut 200 to 300 jobs

by june of next year. the mayor says half of the jobs can be eliminated through attrition and promises it will not affect city services. >> it is 5:07 and gidget the dog who managed to want 2700 miles from a montgomery county home is back. gidget's family was ready to give their pet a big welcome at philadelphia international airport last night but gidget didn't want any part of it. as soon as she was put on the ground she took off running. the family managed to eventually corral gidget. the dog's owner held her tightly as she talked to reporters. >> make sure she doesn't get out of the gate first. get her a nice good meal and get her back in, maybe a bath and get her in a nice warm bed with us. >> gidget disappeared in april from huntingdon valley and somehow turned up in oregon. >> does look like a busy dog. >> yeah a-lot of energy. >> looks like it might have made some milestones.

some. storm tracker 6 shows we're drive. as we take a look outside we have sky 6 and there's center city. could be some really sunshine but we are generally speaking looking at clouds increasing as the day goes on. take a look at numbers this morning. we're cool typically for this time of year, although not quite as chilly as yesterday, only the upper 40's in allentown and reading. mid-50's in philadelphia. 50 in trenton, 50 in wilmington, 50 in millville and up are 50's in sea isle city. that always on seven day is on the left hand portion of your screen for those of you watching in hd. satellite showing up on future tracker 6. clouds get thicker as we head into 3 o'clock. later around 6:00 when we might start to see shower activity encroach upon the southern shore points but as we get later into the evening that's really when the heavy stuff starts to arrive down the shore and are you going to get pounded with quite a bit of rain down there along the coast.

allentown, well, we're looking at a dry day, increasing clouds, though, breezy, 72 degrees. sunshine could still be poking out fairly late in the day. down the shore in atlantic city a high this afternoon of 70 degrees, mostly cloudy skies pretty much all the way and breezy conditions, too. maybe some early sunshine but the clouds will overtake you sooner to the south. and 75 is the high in philadelphia. again, clouds increasing from south to north through the day. philadelphia right in the middle of that. winds out of the northeast at 10 to 20 miles per hour. a little breezier today because we have that coastal system down to our south the send of which will be getting closer and that's the wind generator. 60 degrees by 8 o'clock this morning, 67 by 11:00, still a little bit on the cool side with clouds increasing. and then by 2 o'clock 74 degrees with our high of 75 probably around 3 o'clock and again those clouds thicker later in the afternoon. and then overnight tonight that's when we really start to get hit with some very heavy rain, even in philadelphia. this is future tracker's projection for about 1:00 in the morning while most of are

you sleeping. it looks like by the morning commute the heaviest rain may be in the process of moving toward the north but it's going to take a long time for 1 to 2 inches of rain to drain and i think that the morning commute even at 9:00 with just light showers is still going to be pretty splashy and slow. 12 o'clock still showers and gradually through the afternoon we begin to see drier conditions. how much rain were we looking at models throwing one to two to maybe a little bit more than that. down the shore we could go 3-inches and some projections saying three to four lots of ponding and puddling overnight down the shore and for drivers on thursday morning we'll look for wet roads, lots of splashing, gusty winds with 35 miles per hour gusts possible especially in and around philadelphia. if you're down the shore it's going to be worse with gusts going as high as 45 miles per hour and high waves could produce minor tidal flooding, respect currents into tonight and tomorrow and rainfall 2 to 3 inches or more as you just saw. your exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, today the calm before the storm. clouds will increase but we'll

stay dry. 75 is the high. later tonight that rain starts to arrive. tomorrow morning the worst of the rain pushing through the region moving off to the north but leaving roads pretty wet. 66 in the afternoon with some lingering showers. but friday the sunshine returns. we get a high of 74, uh-huh, low 80's for the weekend. saturday and sunday still looking great. and 79 on monday, partly sunny with cooler weather and rain returning for tuesday. >> okay. thank you david. >> yeah. >> next up at 5:11, protect, serve and deliver. an oregon man gets quite a surprise when he opens his door and finds two police officers holding a pizza. >> frightening faces are appearing in pumpkin patch out west. a farmer reveals how he grows these ghoulish gourd as little later in the morning buzz. karen. >> it is frightening. all right, looking live here in southwest philadelphia, i-95 by the airport. last time i showed you this should there i said we had an accident where a a vehicle ran into a guardrail. looks like they were about to clear it. now you see they have. we still have other problems

>> ♪ >> 5:14. taking a live look at philadelphia international airport waiting for some soaking rains to come can up here. could lead to a delay in flights in plays like atlanta and charlotte. >> let's get a look at track. we hope everybody who has a commute down from bucks or uses 95 today is a little bit easier for them. >> yeah, that's right, after the mess from yesterday i think they're looking okay there but we've got lots of issues out there at this early hour. let's start on the new jersey turnpike. this is an accident yet again involving an overturned tractor-trailer but it's here in new jersey on the turnpike southbound approaching the delaware memorial bridge.

it happened about 2:30 this morning but you still want to expect some delays with this while they continue to the process of clearing it out. 295 southbound a good alternate for you and no problems on 295 southbound. you're seeing speeds of about 65 miles an hour. so that's looking pretty good. but let's taking over to willingboro, staying in new jersey, this is burlington county, an accident here rockland drive at roxborough place so a new accident there. another accident where a vehicle ran into a pole and this is in montgomery county, stump hall road near green hill road. so, watch for that one this morning. and let's go outside live and show you what it looks like in delaware county. this is i-95 by the commodore barry bridge. construction here is cleared so things looking better. no delays at this point. southbound by the airport we had an accident and that is cleared. it's been busy already this morning and we're dry today and i'm already nervous about tomorrow's commute. on your suburban traffic report we're checking different areas with the waze app like cheltenham, glenside, westmoreland, limekiln pike,

nobody reporting any problems around the area. so far in those areas we're looking pretty good and all the issues we have with traffic and we're dry right now, 56 degrees no problems. we have some heavy rain coming but looks like most of the day is dry. maybe down the shore it starts late in the day. for the rest of us it's later tonight. 75 for your high, increasing clouds but heavy rain overnight and in through tomorrow morning's commute, tam. >> thank you. a gas station clerk in canton ohio got into a shootout with 33 would be robbers. it was all caught on surveillance camera. police say three armed men walked into the gas station and moments later the three suspects and the gas station employee open fire on each other. two of the suspects were shot and killed. the store clerk was hit twice in the legs. he is expected to recover. the third suspect remains on the run. police officers showing up at your door can can often be a bad thing but when two officers turned up after an oregon home they were delivering something good, a pizza. a driver was on his way to deliver a pizza when he was involved in a crash. he was taken to the hospital to get checked out for neck

and back pain and that's when the officers stepped in and offered to finish that delivery for him. >> the phillies have five games left in their dismal season. they enter tonight's game in miami as losers of seven of their last nine games. lost number seven -- loss number seven came last night. cole hamels gave up two runs in seven innings and that was too much because the phillies offense did nothing to support him. marlins win two to nothing. the flyers have been in a bad mood during this preseason. they once again pulled out their fists in an exhibition game against the toronto maple leafs but the tough guy attitude didn't do much to get the puck in the net. flyers lose four to nothing. the regular season opens two weeks from today. >> 5:17 now and a tycoon says everyone should have unlimited vacation days but thanksgiving weekend may not be the best time to take them. >> a fisherman casts his net to rescue a eagle. >> looking at jackets on the kids this morning. like yesterday we're in the 50's in most neighborhoods, uner 40's in some of those northern areas like the lehigh valley.

>> this is newly released video of an exhausted bald eagle swimming towards a fisherman's boat in can today. the fisherman brought the bird aboard hoping it would be able to flyway when the wings dried out. then he realized the bird was sick. then called a rescue center. the the eagle is getting recovery time and will eventually be released back into the wild. >> poor thing. hope he's better soon. and hope the commute improves. what's up with that at this early hour? let's take a look here. a few inches in camden. admiral wilson boulevard approaching baird boulevard a water main break. the right lane is blocked. crews are out there working on repairs. expect some slowing. it's not slow just yet, it's too early but i think if it stays out there you're going to deal with that one. construction blocks the right lane on the northeast

as we head out the door this morning, perhaps to catch that school bus, well, looks like it's going to be cool to begin, 57 at 6:00, 60 by 8:00 a.m. partly cloudy, there's a chance the breeze starts to pick up a little bit, too, later in the morning. 63 degrees by 9:00 a.m. and then we do get mild today. 70 by noon, 75 by 3 o'clock. that is your high at 3 o'clock and then back down to 69 at 6 o'clock but notice how the clouds continue to get thicker. in fact as we take a look at satellite you can already see clouds continuing to well up from the south and getting rather thick in southern delaware and cape may county. the wider view shows i was central t-, or an area of low pressure that is sent of it right about there that is on its way in this direction and as it gets closer to us later tonight we are going to see some of that rain start to move up into areas south of philadelphia and then eventually overnight all the way up through philadelphia and into the northern suburbs. karen, some of this rain could be heavy and tomorrow morning's commute looks wet. the latest on future tracker coming up. >> we'll be here to help you thro
