a man was killed by a hit-and-run driver. in both cases children had to witness the tragedy involving their loved ones. it is friday night app the big story on "action news" tonight begins at 15 and washington avenue. a 29-year-old woman and 8-year-old son were crossing the street when tragedy struck in the form of a septa bus. "action news" reporter sharee williams is live at the scene. sharee. >> and jim, this all happened just before 7:30 right in the street behind me. the initial investigation philadelphia police telling me that it appears they were not using the crosswalk. and that they may have tried to outrun the bus. >> it's the type of tragedy no young child should endure seeing a parent die. >> it's tragic. tragic accident. >> philadelphia police say a 29-year-old home was walking with-year-old sop when the two tried to cross the street at 15 and washington in south philadelphia, 8-year-old son.

this as a septa bus was making a left turn on to washington. that's when investigators say the mom and son accidentally got in the path of the bus. >> bus was in motion. i suspect based on what i understand, they knew the bus was in motion. and they tried to outrun the bus as it was making its turn. she was struck by the right front of bus. >> the mother fell under the front tire and became entangled under the bus the boy was struck and is expected to be okay. his mother's injuries were too severe. she died at the scene. police say the boy stayed by his mom ace side trying to do all he could to save her life. >> this little boy watched this happen to his mother and was actually trying to rendered aid to her before arrival of police and the officer arrived and found him sitting with her. >> this was route 27 bus that was involved in this accident. accident investigators from the

philadelphia police department along with septa now conducting internal investigation speaking with the driver of the bus. no one was on the bus at the time of this crash. as for the-year-old he is at chop recovering from his injuries. we're live in south philadelphia, sharee williams, "channel 6 action news," jim . >> all right. sharee. let's switch to "action news" reporter chad pradelli gorgus lane in east mt. airy police caught to suspects but it was hit and run tragedy. >> a terrible tragedy 73-year-old grandfather is dead and 13-year-old grandson treated at a local hospital. there is wreckage behind me. you can see the collision was forceful. here's what police are tell me the two cars collided at the intersection and appears the suv did not stop it t bond that red compact car instantly killing grand father and 13-year-old grandson was taken to einstein.

he's since been transferred to chop. as for driver and passenger in. uv they plead on footch the passenger was caught on gorgus lane hiding under steps and driver was found 300 block hehan. i'm told by police the driver of that suv is not cooperating and police believe drugs and/or alcohol were involved in this fatal hit-and-run. again, a grandfather is dead. a 13-year-old grandson is at chop being treated for injuries. but i'm told he'll survive. live in east mt. airy, chad pradelli, chapel 6abc news, jim. >> thank you, chad, we're following breaking news in the juniata section of philadelphia. a 61-year-old man is in critical company after shot in the chest. this happened in the 1500 block of east luzerne after 9:00 tonight. the victim was rushed to temple university hospital in critical condition. so far no arrest nor a motive.

police arrested suspected car thief after he led officers phone a chase through several philadelphia neighborhoods tonight. the 20 minute pursuit came to end in kensington just after 8:00. police say the suspect bailed from the car, tried to fake out officers by just walking done the street, talking on his cellphone. they did not fall for it. he surrendered. >> a mystery respiratory illness has claimed the life of a 4-year-old preschool student in hamilton township, new jersey. the child attended yardville elementary school. new jersey health officials sent samples to cdc to find out if the illness is the enterovirus 68. a severe case of the virus was confirmed in a child from delaware and the illness sent hundreds of children to hospitals in 30 states. close to 50 people prayed and mar.ed for iesha rockman tonight
