we'll show you where on this national coffee day. well good monday morning to you. we begin with the new revelations from president obama on what we did not know about isis. >> as the brutal militant group threatens to swallow up entire swaths of the middle east, we're getting a clear picture why isis grew so big so fast. susan saulny is in washington for us this morning. >> reporter: the president is now describing isis as a cancer, one that was underestimated. u.s. fighter jets in the persian gulf. ready for takeoff 24/7. the latest indication of the american mission in syria. air strikes against isis are ongoing in iraq. the campaign is intensifying on

the ground with kurdish and iraqui fighters taking on the isis militant who is have brutally murdered american and british hostages. they continue to spread terror lover iraq and syria. prompting this question on the cbs news program "60 minutes." >> how did they end up where they are in control of so much territory? was that a complete surprise to you? >> well, i think our head of the intelligence community, jim clapper has acknowledged i think they underestimated what had been taking place in syria. >> i mean, he didn't say that just say that we underestimated isil. he said, we overestimated the ability and the will of our allies. the iraqi army, to fight. >> that's true. that's absolutely true. >> reporter: the president described isis as a cancer. house speaker john boehner agreed.

but added that the u.s. might have to do more. >> at sot point, somebody's boots have to bonn the ground. they intend to kill us. if we don't destroy them first, we're going to pay the price. >> reporter: for now, the president continues to rule out american troops on the ground. >> pseudoen saulny for us in washington. thank you so much. pro-democrat si pro tests are block roads. they're camping out with food, water, and shelter from the sun. yesterday's protests turned violent. dozens of people have been arrested. military and other rescue workers have started air-lifting more than two dozen bodies from the peak of a japanese volcano this morning. at least 31 people are believed to have died when the volcano erupted without warning over the weekend. how they die sd unclear.

four members of a college softball team. the driver of that tractor trailer may have been distracted before the crash. he drove through a median without any signs of braking or trying to avoid the collision. a dozen others were injured. a tandem sky jump turned deadly on cape cod. the instructor and the student were aiming for a spot at an airport. they overshot. there is a skydiving school at cape cod airfield. it's unclear if the victims were avil yated with the school. the final phase of the murder trial of jodi arias gets under way today. she's admitted to killing her exboyfriend, shooting him in the face and stabbing him 29 times. jurors last year couldn't agree on her punishment. prosecutors have one more shot at the death penalty. if this jury can't agree, the judge will send her to life in

much of sarasota, florida, underwater this morning. the threat is not over yet. streets looked more like rivers after days of heavy rain fool. a flood warning is in effect until tomorrow morning. the showers and thunderstorms expected for the rest of the week, that warning could be extended. >> more flooding through florida. showers over the upper midwest. flooding conditions from new mexico up into the rockies. and spreading across the upper plains. if you're flying, airport delays are possible in denver. and air travel delays

expected as well around the chicago area. with the chicago area control sent per. >> this was a mess. thousands of flights canceled since the incident last friday. the delays were felt literally all around the world. here's david kerley. >> reporter: passengers still passing time in line with air traffic control around chicago still down. >> it's been very crazy. >> reporter: at least the passengers knew there were problems. >> really frustrated. >> reporter: about 70% of flights are getting in and out. still more than 500 flights canceled on sunday. the problem? the damage was so extense toif the regional center outside chicago when a 36-year-old contractor who worked in in building sabotaged the building, caused a fire, and tried to commit suicide. one official says there's so much blood, it's a biohazard. the faa has decided to build a duplicate system assembled

inside the building. building a new sent ler take days. the delays and cancellations will last at least two weeks. >> it's affecting the whole world. traffic coming from europe and asia are impacted. they have to absorb some of the delay. >> reporter: one faa official described the impacts on sunday as similar to a bad weather day. we have the potential of 14 bad days ahead. david kerley, abc news, washington reagan airport. a fatal crash involving a monster truck is being investigated in the neter lands. it knocked out a guardrail and drove into a group of onlookers. at least three people were killed. more than a dozen spectators were hurt. the driver is being questioned. a potentially dangerous situation at a gas station in tyler, texas. flames erupted after the drive forgot to put the hose back.

it appears to be an accident. no one was hurt. a california home owner stumbled upon an uninvited guest taking a dip in his pool. it was a deer. the deer jumped straight into the pool, antlers first. he swam around for a little bit. he managed to pull himself out of the pool. it struggled here. munn was a charitable host, singing to the frightened animal to calm it down. the university of michigan's football coach is under fire this morning for leaving his rookie quarterback in the game after he was injured. sophomore shane morris was hit hard, a hit that forced him to the sideline. moments later, coach brady hoke sent him back in. he was drilled again and carted off the field. the unthinkable happened at the red sox game at fenway park. boston fans honoring a yankee.
