chopper 6 hd overhead when the police were on the scene in the maintenance area at the back of the zoo. the 57-year-old worker was a mechanic. the police say he was working on the 9-foot-long golf cart, part of the zoo as fleet when the jack failed and it fell on his chest. no one was around and he laid there a long time until he was discovered at 11:00 when he failed to respond to his radio when other workers tried to reach him. pronounced dead at 11:43 a.m. the mechanic was well known and well-liked and the zoo is helping the employees cope with the tragic accident. >> it is definitely not something we're used to. a lot of really devastating people here. we are bringing in grief counselors to help them work through it. >> he worked at the zoo since march of 2001. it happened in an area not accessible to the public, and

there were no witnesseses. live at the philadelphia zoo sarah bloomquist channel 6 "action news." >> thank you very much. also breaking right now, police may have the man in custody who hit a 7-year-old girl in mantua and drove off over the weekend. it happened at 42nd and penns grove yesterday. one driving a lime green mitts -- hit her and they have not said anything about possible charges. a former police officer accused of rapes two prostitutes at gunpoint now free after the case thence him unraveled. richard decoatesworth level on bail. they withdrew the rape and human trafficking charges against him after what they called was an intense follow-up investigation. he pled guilty to some charges

in february, but he later withdrew that plea. today he wouldn't comment as he left court, but his mother broke down in tears. [crying] >> and decoatesworth was honored lie the white house after being shot in the duty. he left the force in 2011 after several complaints. still facing a felony charge of assaults his ex-girlfriend. former tv sports caster, don tollefson, admitted to scamming hundreds of people with track travel packages. tollefson pleaded guilty this morning in doylestown. he sold tickets to out of town eagles' games and super bowl and followed people he was raising money for charity. he never came through with tickets or travel packages. over 200 victims and the scam a

total of $317,000. the victims say they still don't have their money back. tollefson will be sentenced in 60 days. the manhunt continues today for the man accused of killing a pennsylvania state trooper. the police say they are shifting their search area. troopers say they are still looking for eric frein in the same area. and they moved the grid to areas they are continuing to get. and he is in an area around his parent's home. two people shot on the street in west philadelphia today and police are trying to figure out exactly what happened. they got the call around 10:00 this morning at the 200 block of north abindale street. and a man shot in the head, chin and leg in critical condition.

and another man hit twice in the thigh expected to be ok, and the police have not said who shot who or how it started. the fire that brought chicago's airports to a full stop last week still causing delays and we are feeling the effects in our area. the action cam at philadelphia international today where we saw at least one flight canceled to chicago. the f.a.a. says service at o'hare is still only at about 60% and midway only at about 75%. investigators say a contract employee started the fire friday in chicago just being trying to kill himself. he is expected to make his first appearance in court today. well, we had a stunning weekend, we can't really complain about today's gloomy skies. the good news, they won't be here for very long. >> and meteorologist adam joseph outside. the gray skies have given way to some sprinkles. >> yeah, a couple of drops following right now here outside of the studios. i tell you, this is a gloomy

soldiers and others are searching for a few hours at a time until conditions are too dangerous to condition. to business, that unrest in hong kong making for a tough day on wall street. the dow down, the nasdaq lost 6 and s&p down by 5. macy's expecting a big rough, hiring for workers nationwide. they are looking for workers in the stores, call centers and distribution hubs. they say the increase this year is because of expanding online business. getting your money is costing you more these days. a new survey by bankrate shows the a.t.m. fees on the rise. the out-of-network fees jumped 5% to an all-time high. on average $4.35 paid for every a.t.m. visit. the survey finds the fees are enough to keep most people from using a.t.m.s, but that's

forecast. >> and adam joseph is live at the big board with the details on the gloom out there today. >> not an afternoon for painting in philadelphia down to the south. humidity is back up and showers around, it would take quite some time for the paint to dry. most areas dry in new jersey, there is a wedge of green pulling up the i-95 corridor from baltimore and washington through wilmington into media and philadelphia. it is slowly drifting to the north. almost on the edge of the conshohocken curve right now, 76. sprinkles in the city of philadelphia especially the western sections. going down into new castle county near wilmington along i-95, route 2 near elsmere and spring valley you see the solid area of green with very light showers. enough is falling in this region that we are beginning to see the ground get a little bit damp. as we take a live look on sky 6

at the kristina river in wilmington we have wet pavement i can see closely here behind that particular building. we do have rain drops falling in parts of the area, while most areas see cloud cover. 70 in wilmington you see it is cooler there because of the rain. philadelphia 73. and some of warmer numbers now at the shore from sea isle city to the boardwalk where temperatures now are generally around 75. as we look at satellite and radar, the clouds pulled in no matter where you are. a little brightening here and there as the sun tries to filter through the thick cloud cover, especially eastern new jersey. most of the showers are going to exit off the coast down to our south. there is a little weak area of low pressure. and then you look to the west and you can see some clearing near pittsburgh and that arrivals in time for your tuesday. 8:00 tonight, generally it is dry. but again we still have some light showers in parts of the area, especially south and east of philadelphia.

at 3:00 in the morning, still trying to pick up a couple of sprinkles at the shore. notice some drying to the west in the lehigh valley. as you get into tuesday morning at 10:00 you see a void in the clouds across the part of the delaware valley. sunshine will generally return here for the second day of the workweek. and that continues into the afternoon with only a scattered chance of an isolated shower. so for tonight, the spotty showers this evening in several areas, seasonally warm. philadelphia is normal, 55. we hit 62 by tomorrow morning. and in fact the temperatures stay above normal again tomorrow on the verge of 80 degrees in philadelphia, while most locations staying in the upper 70s in the afternoon. the 4day at four, 79 tomorrow sun and clouds. heavier cloud cover wednesday but still breaks of sun. there could be a scattered shower wednesday, but neither day here a wash-out of 75. and turning much brighter here

vernon odom live at the scene with more on this fire tragedy. vernon? >> the fire marshal is not expected to make an official ruling today, but it could come in the next several days. there are many theories ranging from perhaps faulty wiring to pirated electricity to an unattended candle. at the end of the day it is a tragedy. this is christian rivera the father of an 18-month-old child killed in the predawn fire in his home in the 2700 block of helen street. they were on location in 20 minutes, but it was too late to save rivera. taking 30 minutes to get the fast-moving inferno under control and they found rivera on the first floor. >> we heard smoke alarms. we found one in the basement. we haven't found ones on the other floor. but they said they heard the smoke alarms. >> fortunately spending night

with relatives, rivera's invalid mother had been in the hospital for weeks. and they say they were using candles for light and maybe that's what caused the fire. >> they didn't have lights so they were using the candles. >> fortunately no injuries to the row house neighbors or homes. and no word expected from the fire marshal so far today. live in port richmond, vernon odom channel 6 "action news." flat out executed, that's how the philadelphia police describe the appalling murder of a mother over the weekend. homicide detectives back out on street this afternoon where 42 year polled katherine bett better -- barry was shot in the head. walking to the store with a 13-year-old doubter and dog at the time. her daughter was not heard and

barry died at the hospital. the mother of four did not app to know the gunman. they are looking at video in hopes of identifying the killer. sorting out what was a two-car accident. car parts on the same intersection where a 41-year-old man was shot in the hip after 10:30 this morning. he is listed in stable condition. police tell "action news" they recovered a weapon there and made an arrest, but have not released any more details on the shooting or the accident. a delaware county mother facing charges for how she allegedly tried to settle a high school argument. upper darby police say 36 year old nicole holton brought her teenage daughter to a gas station friday to fight another girl. others saw fists flying and stopped to intervene and the mother said she set up the fight because the school was not handling ongoing issues with the

boys. and she is facing charges including corruption of minors. the philadelphia school district with a new tool to safely collect items prohibited on school grounds. the large blue and white amnesty boxes shown off today at the randolph technical high school. students in the welding promise created them with tools and supplies that were donated. the amnesty boxes in schools across the district for the safe anonymous collection of things like knives and drugs. it is hard to watch, the hit on the field here and they are calling for the university of michigan head coach to be fired over what happened. the quarterback kept in the game even after he was knocked down and clearly hurt. today that coach is defending his decision. >> this does not look good to me. >> the hit that is hard to watch of the brutal moment that the

university of michigan quarterback, shane morris is steamrolled by the minnesota player who dropped his head and plowed into him. the espn announcers saying it looks like a concussion hit. >> he can barely stand up now. >> boy, they have to get him out of the ballgame. >> i am totally with you. >> the sophomore, number 7, struggled to stand robbing his head. the head coach kept him in the game. >> i have to tell you right now that number 7 in the game still is it appalling. >> and he briefly takes him out but later puts him back in. >> he can barely stand up. this is not good player management. we talked about player safety in this game. guys getting hit in the head this is atrocious to me. >> morris eventually carted off the field. and today the coach defended himself in his position saying he didn't know he was wobbling. >> i would never put a kid in that situation. never have and never will.
