>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. edwards, karen rogers and 5 o'clock. it is tuesday, october 21st, tam is off, nydia han joins us. breaking right now. >> olympic runner oscar pistorius has just learned how much jail time he'll serve for killing his girlfriend. >> stray bullets blast through a philadelphia home with several people sleeping inside. >> keep the umbrellas handy. accuweather is tracking unsettled weather for the next several days. >> let's turn now to dave murphy and karen rogers for more on that. good morning. >> good morning, everybody and on the big board we have storm tracker 6 live double scan showing you those showers pushing off toward the northeast. every now and then we get a blip of darker green or yellow. looks like there's a little bit of that in southern chester county. it's quickly pushing towards the northeast. there isn't a whole lot behind

that right now but every now and then you'll get some light sprinkle or shower. looks like there's a bit of that coming across delaware and south jersey. most of this highlight in there lighter shades of green. wide view on satellite shows breaks in the clouds out to our west. at times we might see a little sun breaking through. i can see some of that later this morning, maybe into about midday. at the same time there are additional showers out to the west that are spoking around an area of low pressure moving in off the coast and as we go through the day a couple of spotty sprinkles and showers are possible. this is not a washout however. 54 degrees in philadelphia right now, 52 up in allentown, 53 in reading, 50 in trenton. even 60's in sea isle city and down the coast in atlantic city and as we head out the door to start that car or perhaps catch the bus 51 degrees by 6 o'clock, 52 by 8 o'clock, a light shower is possible mostly cloudy skies and dry for most of you though t on the smartphone right now at the train station we're looking at 54 degrees under mainly cloudy skies in philadelphia. we are going to improve today. 52 by 8 o'clock, 63 by noon

and then by 3 o'clock, 67 degrees with a high i should say of 68 and that will probably go right in there at about 4 o'clock this afternoon. couple of more sprinkles and showers on the way. vial more on that on future tracker 6 and a little better chance of rain tomorrow, karen. that's coming up. >> let's talk about a new problem. an accident where a vehicle ran into a guardrail. expect some restrictions. this is in wilmington manor new castle county route 13 northbound right at 295. so watch for this accident just coming in. live here this time in delaware county checking out i-95 at 420. looking pretty good. roads here basically dry even though we have those light showers that are moving through so be careful about that where some of your roads are damp but here we're looking good and very light volume so no problems in this area. the burlington bristol bridge just reopened. it had been closed for construction. it will be closed again tonight at 9 o'clock for construction all this week. stick to the turnpike connector bridge instead and one more look here. let's go to hamilton township mercer county. the ramp connecting 33 with 295 still closed.

construction lasts here for about another hour so use the ramp at sloane avenue instead. back to you, matt. >> all right, karen, thanks. braking right now, a judge has just sentenced olympian oscar pistorius for the shooting death his girlfriend last year. "action news" reporter katherine scott joins us from the studio. >> we now know that oscar pistorius will be serving five years in jail for killing his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp last year. the judge also gave pistorius a three year suspended sentence for a firearms charge. pistorius had been taken to the cell. he stood to hear the sentence in front of a packed courtroom in pretoria south africa not too long ago. the prosecution had called for a minimum 10 year sentence behind bars. the defense had argued for community service and house arrest for the 27-year-old olympic and paralympic track star. pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide which is similar to what a manslaughter charge would be here in the u.s. he was cleared of murder. pistorius had said he shot his girlfriend by accident on

valentine's day last year fearing that she was an intruder in his house. the judge told the packed courtroom when she began this morning that the sentencing decision was hers alone. the sentences will be served concurrently so it sounds like a maximum of five years behind bars. >> the extent of the negligence in culpable homicide cases plays an important role in coming to an appropriate sentence which should neither be too severe nor too light. >> at this point what we're hearing from experts is that oscar pistorius will need to serve at least one-sixth of of the five year term before being considered for home deet tension. nydia. >> someone fired bullets into a north philadelphia home overnight while people were sleeping inside. nobody was hit. bullet shell casing littered the 4300 block of north derian street. who fired the shots and why are still under investigation.

president obama's ebola czar ron clean gets to work tomorrow. as we reported yesterday, the cdc is advising healthcare workers in the u.s. to be fully protected when treating ebola patients. the cdc can not require lops to follow the guidance. the u.s. and canada are pushing for approval of expert at a vaccines. >> philadelphia police say two armed holdups may have been carried out by the same woman. police were investigating a robbery at 57th street and chester avenue in west philadelphia and were then called to 60th street in kingsessing avenue at 9:00 last night. investigators say a woman walked into a store at that location and announced a holdup, grabbed an unknown amount of cash and fled. her description matches that of the earlier robbery. fire at a doylestown nursing home forced an evacuation. chopper 6 was over the briarleaf nursing home on the 200 block of belmont avenue shortly after 8:00 last night. it broke out in an elevator

shaft. firefighters quickly put it out. but the smoky conditions led to the temporary evacuation. no one was hurt. >> the battle over the philadelphia teachers contract is now being fought in the courts. a judge has temporarily blocked the school district from making teachers pay for part of their healthcare. that's a result of yesterday's preliminary injunction. the school reform commission canceled the teachers' contract sparking a massive protest last week. the src has appealed yesterday's decision. >> david joins us and this rain generally a nuisance, not much more than that. >> it's really light. the only thing i worry about a little bit is always that light rain mixing with oil and also leaves this time of year so roads may be a little slick in some spots. storm tracker 6 shows you most areas are dry. as we go into that two dimensional view you can see it's a thin band of very light rain highlight in there lighter shades of green. most of this is pushing through south jersey right now but there has been some off and on in through philadelphia as well and you can see again

the movement. pretty quickly off to the north and to the east. if we go in tighter most of your most heavily traveled roadways in the center of the region are probably mainly dry but you know this light stuff pops through here and there there could be an issue. in oxford chadds ford chester county and in the western edge of delaware county, there's another little shower that's on its way and i'll leave you with that wide view. as we take a look outside, we do have cloudy skies on sky 6 over center city. and it looks like it's going to remain mostly cloudy today with some times of sunny breaks and occasionally those spotty showers around. 54 degrees in philadelphia currently, 54 in wilmington. 52 degrees in allentown. 50 in trenton and even 60's down the shore. i brought in that always-on day planner for you to look ahead for the rest of the day on the left-hand portion of your screen if you're watching in hd now, rain today. by now up until about six, 7 o'clock most of what you see out there now is going to be pushing offer to the north and east.

by noon there could be some sunny breaks and then later this afternoon after about 4 or 5 o'clock we'll be looking at the redevelopment of a couple of more showers spoking around with a little feature popping through. most of the day is dry, mainly cloudy but occasionally we might see some of this later on in the evening hours and tonight between 10 and 11 o'clock when cecily and adam are on the air on channel 17 and channel 6 respectively. we might see more popping through. allentown mostly cloudy, just a spotty shower, 65 is your forecast high. there's a real good chance that once we get done with this early morning stuff that you don't see anything else until about 4, 5 o'clock later on today. at the shore mostly cloudy, a spotty shower at times but dry most of the way, 68 is the high. that's not too bad. and in philadelphia, 68 is your high, mostly cloudy, a spotty shower can't be ruled out. winds are very much on the light side. as we roll through the day, we're up to 61 by 11 o'clock. in the afternoon with the upper 60's with a high of 68 probably striking at about 3, 4 o'clock this afternoon. and then tomorrow better chance of rain in the morning. we'll be here with storm

i don't think so no. >> no hard to do that in this transition period we're n let's go to karen rogers good morning. >> that's right, good morning. let's check your suburban traffic report as you're headed out nice and early. we're looking live right now and this is upper state road and county line road and you can see right here roads are a little bit wet so be careful as you're traveling out there this morning. not causing any problems just something to watch for as you're headed out. we do have a new problem in east norriton. dekalb pike 202 blocked near lawnton. watch for police activity. montgomery county we've got that roadway blocked. stick to swede road or new hope street to avoid a problem. on the northeast extension northbound the construction is clear approaching lansdale so we're seeing that green traffic flow with traffic moving fine but approaching quakertown you have uneven surfaces with that construction that has already taken place. be careful if you're headed towards quakertown on the northeast extension it's a bumpy ride. also on the pennsylvania turnpike construction blocking two lanes, the left lane and

on two youngsters in this disturbing video that's prompting a police investigation. highlight in there lighter shades of green coming out of delaware pushing into cape may county and catching some of atlantic county and southern cumberland county as well. we also have that cell in the central portion of chester county that's slowly pushing up towards montgomery county. montco and bucks with a little bit more. allentown looks like you'll split the difference between this stuff coming to your south and another batch going to the north but in everybody's case there's a chance of slightly damp roads out there. this is not un91 dating rain. be careful even with slight dampness on the roads especially with those leaves in play now. as we take a wide view you see there's a little bit of clearing out to the west and so there is a chance that a little later this morning and into early afternoon we'll see skies brighten a bit but at the same time there's additional precipitation spoking around an area of low pressure and we will be on the lookout for some scattered spotty showers as we go through the dame i'm going have future tracker 6 giving you a better idea of that in a couple minutes. 54 right now philadelphia, 52 allentown, 53 reading, 54 wilmington, 60 along the boardwalks and as we head outside to catch that school
