happening on "action news" tonight. he was found guilty of killing his girlfriend on valentine's day last year. today oscar pistorius learned his fate in a courtroom. and we are just a few week as way from the midterm elections as the battle over new jersey's third congressional bat simone legree heating up. now oscar pistorius is sentenced to five years behind bars, he did not react during proceedings, he was found guildy of killing girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. karen travers says both sides accept the punishment. >> this police van took oscar pistorius away from court to central prison. >> the sentence that is fair and just, both to society and to the

accused -- >> the south african judge sentenced the olympic runner to a maximum of five years in prison for the 2013 shooting death of his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. the reaction in the courtroom was muted, pistorius was stoic. >> a huge win for oscar pistorius, and i think it's frustrating to a lot of other people. outside of the courthouse people weighed in. >> do you think it was fair? >> yes. >> pistorius's uncle says there is no plans to appeal the sentence. >> we accept the judgment, oscan a will embrace this opportunity to pay back to society. >> pistorius may be housed in medical wing of this prison. the judge made it clear that she felt the system was equipped to

handle his rare medical needs but he may not be there long. >> under the law after a sixth of the sentence are you allowed to question a different type of sentence. like house arrest. >> the prosecution can now appeal the sentence but they have to do so within the next two weeks. reporting from washington, karen travers, channel 6 "action news." and world news tonight with david muir will have more on the oscar pistorius sentencing, can you watch that at 6:30 following "action news" at 6:00. in other news, a fast moving storm system caught drivers off guard in new jersey. in brick township, a rescuer had to pull a man and his two children to safety. it was along princeton avenue, he told "action news" he was on his way back from a funeral when it started pouring. >> it didn't seem that high. the rain came so fast, there was

20 feet clearance and it just stopped. >> the water reached as high as the passenger side door and luckily nobody was hurt. drains were clogged with debris and leaves and that led to the rising waters. a police dispatcher that plead guilty to tipping off tow trucks will spend the next 14 months in prison. she netted more than $35,000. one of accused tow truck drivers william cheeseman plead guilty back in july and he will be sentenced later this month. philadelphia police are asking the public to identify these two men in the surveillance video, they are suspected of trying to rob the dollar general store on green street in west mt. airy. they ordered everyone to the

back of the store and one got away and ran out the front. the suspects ran out and didn't take anything more than a cell phone. now to vote 2014, there is a big battle to fill the congressional seat, the position was once held by former philadelphia eagle turned politician, john runyon, nora muchanic is live now in the new jersey newsroom with a look at the race. >> reporter: the third district includes most of the burlington and ocean counties and with runyon leaving, this is a seat that republicans would love to hang on to. he is a wealthy retired executive from north jersey shore and moved his office there when john runyon zirded not to run for re-election. >> i plan to bring my years of

tonight five new jersey coaches can find out if they can keep their jobs in the wake of the hazing it scandal. four players are charged with sex abuse for crimes against younger teammates that happened last month. the school canceled the entire football season and five coaches are suspended in the fallout. >> they were widespread and accepted acts of bullying and hazing in that program. >> the head coach is among the five suspended and all are tenured teachers all still receiving their pay. they will find out tonight if they can keep their jobs on and off the court. jaime apody is live in the sports center now. >> hello, we can breathe a sigh of relief, we have football to

coast, that will stall over our region, especially for southern new england. at 7:00 tomorrow morning on future tracker, downpours south and east the closer you are to the low, drier to the west, as the low continues to pinwheel to the east, even 4:00 tomorrow afternoon, some scattered showers and thunderstorms around the region, a strong wind as well. along this low, north-northeast, at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon, wind gusts at 45 miles per hour, and less than the poconos away from the storm, stronger closer to the shore at 33 miles per hour in wildwood and 30 in atlantic city. that low is just to our south and east tomorrow morning with periods of rain, a half inch to inch and that low slowly drifts to the north and hammers new england and brings us a lot of clouds and a cool 57 tomorrow and wind gusts on thursday near 30 miles per hour.
