we begin with the new details in the terror attack on canada's capital. >> investigators believe that the gunmaning acted alone when killed a soldier and opened fire inside parliament. >> this was the attack, members of parliament running to safety. it was the quick action by the sergeant at arms. >> all happening just 60 miles from the u.s. border. elizabeth herr has the latest. >> reporter: well, reena and t.j., as you mentioned, police say this morning they believe they know who was responsible. but they don't know why this 32-year-old committed what the prime minister is calling a terrorist act. a day of mayhem and fear in the halls of canada's parliament and on the streets of ottawa. it all began shortly before 10:00 a.m. at canada's national war memorial. a man with a rifle shot and killed corporal nathan cirillo who was guarding the tomb of the

unknown soldier. >> the victim was a member of the canadian armed forces. it was fatal. >> reporter: and they were looking for the shooter. >> one soldier has been hit. >> reporter: but just two minutes after the shooting, another attack inside the packed parliament building steps away from the memorial. lawmakers scrambled before cover with dozens of shots echoing through the halls. canadian prime minister steven harper rushed from the scene. and finally ended when kevin vickers shot and killed the gunman. the attacks raised the speck or of terrorism. >> i would not be surprised if there was more in canada and the west in general. >> reporter: they were on high alert after an attack two days ago by a man they feared was radicalized. >> our national security teams

shocking. >> elizabeth herr live in ottawa. thank you so much. a tourist may have taken a photo of 24-year-oldville low moments before the shooting. >> you can see him on the left. the tweet said, so we were on a tour at the war monument in ottawa a few minutes ago. a few seconds later, there was a shooting. social media user likely not aware that he possibly snapped the last picture of the victim. >> we're learning more about the man being held a hero in the shooting. kevin vickers is a 58-year-old native of new brunswick. he has been a sergeant at arms in the house of commons. he's responsible for safeguarding parliament buildings. he spent 30 years from the royal canadian mounted police. the nhl postponed the game between the maple leafs and toronto, and pittsburgh played

fence. yeah. it was like last time where the guy went up in a sprint. >> the fence jumper was arrested and went to the hospital. two of the dogs went to the vet to be checked for injuries. good news for one of the nurse who is contracted ebola after treating are thomas eric duncan. amber vinson's family says she's ebola-free. she's sitting up in a bed in atlanta. she won't be discharged until she regains her strength. nina pham is in good condition. and the first ebola test on her quarantined dog has come back negative. four black water security guards are appealing their convictions for shooting 30 american iraqis. they claim would they were acting in self-defense. the 2007 incident left 14 iraqis dead and inflamed anti-american sentiment around the globe. one of the guards is facing life

in prison for first-degree murder. at minneapolis-st. paul airport, two planes clipped wings while taxiing. no one was injured. the damaged planes were out of service. the nor'easter storm that caused a death in maryland is getting stronger into new england. a woman died north of baltimore when a tree fell on her moving suv. the storm is now moving up the coast through the mid-atlantic states and will batter boston and points north today. the nor'easter brought heavy rain and wind to rhode island. knocking down trees and power lines. thousands are without power, and they are expecting a rough commute. >> and we will see rain today up into canada. and heavy rain in the northwest and showers west of the great lakes and south florida. >> high temperatures in the northeast and northwest, won't

over the handling of a nationwide air bag recall which now totals more than 8 million vehicles. top lawmakers are scolding the federal agency in charge of the recall for its poor response. and this morning's wall street journal reports that the u.s. attorney in manhattan is investigating whether taka da who makes the air bags lied. they can explode sending shrapnel at the driver. the nation's second largest tobacco company, reynolds america, has a smoking ban. at the winston-salem, north carolina, headquarters they will not be able to smoke at their desks. indoor smoking facilities are being built, and smokeless will be allowed. and a third flavor. the chesnut pray lean latte is joining others next month. they tested it last year, and now goes on sale november 12th.
