and good tuesday morning to you all. i'm t.j. holmes. >> and reena ninan. this morning voters head to the term in an important midterm election that could shift the balance in washington. >> it's coming down to the wire and tahman bradley live with all the details. tahman, d.c. could look a little different after tonight. good morning to you. >> reporter: it sure could. good morning to you, t.j. and reena. happy election day. today's pain event is the battle for control of the u.s. senate. republicans are brimming with confidence. they think they had a strong head into the campaign and momentum is on their side. it's election day in america. voters heading to the polls to have their say. on the line, all 435 house seats. 36 governors' races and the biggest prize, control of the u.s. senate. polls show republicans are poised for a good night. >> victory is in the air. >> reporter: in kentucky republican mitch mcconnell wrapped up his campaign confident he survived the

challenge from alison lundergan grimes. mcconnell was set to become the majority leader. >> we intend to be a responsible governing republican majority if the american people give us a chance to do that. >> reporter: if the gop holds on to kentucky, georgia and kansas and wins six of 13 democratic-held seats they will recapture the national. analysts say the odds favor republicans. >> you look at the map they simply have multiple paths getting to their goal of 51 senators and taking back control of the senate. >> reporter: also this election republicans are poised to expand the ma zoert in the u.s. house. but there's a possible bright spot for democrats. republican governors in florida, wisconsin and pennsylvania are in danger this year because of voters' anger with incumbents. >> i'm on your side. and you deserve a governor who's on your side. >> reporter: two states with early poll closing times tonight could provide an early glimpse into the result, north carolina and new hampshire. democrats lose either one of those senate races, it could mean a big republican wave.

t.j. and reena. >> we heard a lot. republicans need six seats to regain control but there are wild cards. what are they? >> reporter: definitely, reena. that's why it will be fun. two senate races in georgia and kansas. let's start with georgia, the winner must clear 50% of the vote and there is a libertarian candidate taking vote as way from the democrat and republican so we're looking at a possible runoff in georgia. that means democrats could put their national resources into the race and maybe even win and what i like to call a light color red state turn it blue and kansas, pat roberts, the republican senator for three decades has had a tough race against an independent candidate and last-minute polls show roberts is trailing. he is in real danger there, guys. it's going to be a lot of fun. >> tahman, sounds like you're looking forward to the evening. fun night. tahman bradley for us in washington. thank you so much. our coverage of the midterm vote begins at 7:00 eastern with a one-hour abc special starting at 10:00, 9:00 central here on

abc. and now to the battle against isis. top nations in the middle east are concerning a military pact to take on the islamic fighters. >> egypt, saudi arabia, united arab emirates in talks and they've suffered a major blow. here abc's martha raddatz. >> reporter: there are credible reports coming out of syria that al nusra, an al qaeda-backed affiliate, has taken over the headquarters of the syrian rebels that america backs and america had given those rebels tow missiles, anti-tank weapons. it is unclear what happened to those weapons but there are fears that al nusra, the al qaeda group, has seized them. martha raddatz, abc news, new york. we're learning this morning that the head of naval intelligence has been in limbo for a year. vice admiral ted branch's security clearance has been indefinitely suspended while investigated for possible

misconduct linked to a bribery scandal. the navy isn't commenting but some are calling for him to be reassigned until the investigation is over. meanwhile, two top officers have been fired in the air force nuclear missile command. the dismissals involve the number two commander of the missile wing base, karl jones accused of being verbally abusive to his subordinates. the commander of a missile squadron in north dakota was also fired and created the impression that pregnancy could harm an officer's career. investigators looking into the crash of that virgin galactic spaceship say pieces of it have been found some 35 miles away from the crash site in the mojave desert and looking into why the ship's co-pilot unlocked its wings which are called feathers moments before it broke apart. the co-pilot died in the accident but there's hope that the surviving pilot will be able to fill in some of these blanks. the pulling investigation could take up to a year. the nurse who is quarantined after treating patients in west trick has to deal with officials

in naanee. kaci hickox is now allowed to travel freely in public but she must be closely monitored and her health reports -- report if any symptoms. hickox plans to stay away from public places for another week, she says. that's when the 21-day incue base period ends. 13 years after 9/11, the resurrected world trade center has opened for business. marking an emotional milestone for both new yorkers and the nation. some staffers of conde nast have started working at one world trade center. one saying it's wonderful. another saying she was nervous but hopeful. the nearly $4 billion building is the tallest in the western hemisphere. >> well, one community is about to get some federal assistance. much needed federal assistance. president obama has signed a disaster declaration for the lower puna district threatened by the lava flow. new video showing us the lava hitting a swamp instantly causing the water to boil. the lava is now just 500 feet

the federal regulators are investigating honda looking into whether they failed to report deaths and injuries linked to defects. the government's investigation centers on the air bags made by takata used in honda vehicles and other parts. honda has recalled more than 5

million vehicles in the u.s. to fix the air bag defect. the company says it is cooperating. two korean automakers are getting ready to pay the u.s. government big time. hyundai and kia hit with a $100 million fine for overstating gas mileage on 1.2 million cars. those alleged overstatements had drivers being misled by up to six miles per gallon. the biggest fine ever under the clean air act. well, it appears having a personal edge can be quite profitable. "forbes" is reporting simon cowell and howard stern are the entertainment world's highest earning personalities. both raking in more than $95 million over the past year topping off the top five, glenn beck, $90 million, oprah, fourth, $82 million. dr. phil, $77 million. a 27-year-old canadian named jordan is seeking a travel partner. take a look. that's him with his ex-girlfriend elizabeth gallagher and brought round the world plane tickets and broke

wyoming. if you're flying airport delays possible in dallas. back to the news now and a $10,000 reward is now being offered in connection with the kidnapping of a young woman off a philadelphia street. >> this incident was caught on camera and appears to be random. with more now here is abc's mara schiavocampo. >> reporter: police releasing this chilling surveillance video of what they say is a woman being kidnapped by a complete stranger. watch as the suspect's car parks on the street sunday evening. less than a minute later, this man walks up the street. police saying he spots his target and begins stalking her. 22-year-old carlesha freeland-gaither who reportedly lives just blocks away. the suspect described as a plaque male about 5'10" then crosses the street and strikes grabbing freeland-gaither forcibly drags her down the street. the video is silent but witnesses say they heard her

screaming for help. >> i just want her to come back home safe. i don't care what anybody have to do. >> reporter: philadelphia police have embraced using social media to help solve cases. this man convicted of trying to snatch a little girl off the street. he turned himself in just six hours after the tape was released online. officialing hoping for a similar outcome in this case. mara schiavocampo, abc news, new york. officials in los angeles are investigating the collision of a utility truck into an american airlines jetliner at l.a.x. the plane was sitting empty on the tarmac when the truck hit it. causing damage to one of the plane's turbines. the driver had to be pulled from the truck and hospitalized. there was no fire, no significant fuel leak and no other reported injuries. meanwhile outside charlotte, north carolina, a group of good samaritans are being praised for their quick action after a pickup truck crashed into a gas mump. surveillance video captures the moment when the truck sped into the gas station slammed into the

pump and burst into flames. bystanders rushed in to save the father and son inside the truck. >> i was afraid the truck would catch on fire. i smelled gas everywhere. i just wanted to get them out of the truck. >> police say the father suffered a seizure and his 13-year-old son grabbed the wheel to steer the truck away from oncoming traffic. but went off the road and into the gas station. friends of the driver say he is recovering in the hospital this morning. meantime, want to turn to a big honor last night from one of our guys and a football hall of famer. michael strahan does some things around abc. the former giant defensive great presented with his hall of fame ring inducted into the hall of fame over the summer but before the game strahan said instead of the ceremony he would have preferred to suit up one last time. >> he looks terrific. and the way that monday night football went for the
