our trenton newsroom. >> reporter: hi there, 35-year-old rookie senator, cory booker spent last year avoiding the media spotlight and learned the ropes in washington, he is facing off tonight against republican jeff bell, who ran for this setback in 1978 and lost, no republican has been elected to the u.s. senate in new jersey in over 30 years, democratic u.s. senator, cory booker voted in newark where you used to be mayor. he won a special election last year to replace senator frank loutenberg who died in office. >> we need people in washington that will bring people together and stop the partisan gridlock. >> booker's republican challenger is jeff bell, a former reagan speech writer, he decided to run for office after living in virginia for years.

i'm nora muchanic live in the new jersey newsroom. >> and from the delaware newsroom, democratic u.s. senator chris couns voted at highland elementary school in wilmington, he has held a seat since 2010, that was held by beau biden. he voted at united methodist church. the action cam was in chester as election volunteers opened up a polling place more than three hours late and voters in other locations in the county were turned away at first as well. others lined up outside of the door refusing to give up their right to vote. >> to be ready before 7:00, people in line at 7:00. >> somebody needs to file a
