pushing deep into the nation's center as we speak. >> plummeting in denver, dropping 20 degrees in 30 minutes it's snow, a lot of it. and more to come today. >> we begin with tahman bradley. >> reporter: a monster winter storm is pushing cold air and heavy snow across the midwest. roads are treacherous. >> i've been sitting here for about two hours. and i have, i don't know, 15 trucks behind me. >> reporter: in duluth, minnesota, icy conditions caused this awful 16-vehicle pileup. >> landslide of cars down the hill. >> reporter: an army of to trucks and commuters tried to help each other out. >> we're going to get each other out. >> reporter: and they are encouraging people to slow down, eight seconds between them and the car in front of them. >> you don't rush it, you should be fine. >> reporter: sweeping into the lower 48 from a powerful storm

and the other major story, in china, world leaders and president obama at an economic summit in beijing. poe posing for the photo here. and serious business, the president meeting with china over economic issues. >> reporter: good morning. president obama is getting down to business, attending apex business meetings have having a visit with president xi. it's a hearty discussion on the thornier issues where there may be potential for agreement, climate change and cyber security. president obama will bring up areas of staunch disagreement, including human rights. president obama is spending one-on-one time with president xi to develop the fragile and oftentimes tense relationship. this was after china pulled out the stops to welcome world leaders with a lavish over the top ceremony. it looked like a scene from the

hunger games as they drove down with lights and l.e.d. colors. dancers on either side. china has gone to extreme measures to prepare, including this rare clear sky behind me. government agencies closed, drivers told to stay off the roads in an attempt to clear some of this city's notorious pollution. it's so extreme, locals are calling it apec blue. >> okay. and sentencing for the captain at the center of the south korea ferry disaster that left more than 300 people dead, mostly teenagers. the captain got a 36-year prison sentence, found guilty of negligence. but escaped a murder conviction which could have led to the death penalty. the chief engineer was sentenced to 30 years and 13 crew members got 20 years. the lava flow in hawaii
